Guessing movies from their Finnish names (with special guest Allu!)
We're back with another fun quiz--this time on film!
I'm a film fan, and my is...not. But her Finnish skills are far superior to mine, so I thought I would put them to the test!
Let me know if you get the rationale behind some of the odd title changes, we'd love to learn why.

The story behind "Finland isn't real" and why it matters
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
I may be a few years behind the curve, but apparently I've been living in a made up country for over 2 years now. But the rabbit hole goes WAY deeper than I thought, and is more significant than you might think! This is a story of conspiracies, silly goofs, propaganda, and outright war. #finland #suomi #americaninfinland #conspiracy #conspiracytheory #propaganda #geopolitics #russia #ukraine #w...
How Finland took over your smartphone

Every day, it feels like I find another thing that Finland pioneered. For instance, when I moved here two years ago, I had only a sliver of appreciation for their influence on the ecosystem of mobile phones. This is the story of how Finland took one of their first economic success stories and spun it into a globe spanning network of artists, software developers, computer engineers, and LOTS of ...

Man, I remember when The Web Store's only physical brick-and-mortar presence was a tiny hole in the wall with two guys in there who would sell you a video card and some RAM. I think they *only* sold computer components at the time. Then they started carrying some energy drinks and snacks.. and some gadgets.. and some other small hobbyist electronics..

14:50 Latvasta laho, I'd say laho is mainly wood rot. but in this case latvasta laho is a slang and it means stupid, dumb or crazy, so the person is the tree, and the treetop is rotten.

The translators had a bit of fun with Arnold's movies: Running Man became "Juokse tai kuole/Run or Die" ja Total Recall became Unohda tai kuole/Forget or die". My favorite bad translation is Ski School: "Mekot lentää ja meno maittaa/The skirts are flying and the going's great!"

"Dial M for Murder" can't be translated and make sense since Finland did not use the "dial 0800-MURDER" system of replacing numbers with letters based on the map on the keypad that USA had... So it becomes absolutely meaningless when all of your phonenumbers have always been just numbers.

The reason Finns translate the movie names and often alter them heavily is first marketability. Some of the translations makes it sound mundane or incredibly naive, and you can't have "tough action man" as your movie title... but then when you translate them to English the same thing happens in reverse: what was perfectly ok title in the native language becomes really silly in translation. Specially when the languages are SO different, Japanese movie titles have the same thing. Direct translations are hilarious, "Big Butt Man" when it is suppose to imply a big muscular hero.. But there is also tradition, since they started translating them in the 50s and some names are so silly, partly also because of person having to figure out a name didn't have best english speaking skills or did not understand the cultural reference, or a common phrase... So it is sort of a joke now. You should not take them so seriously: we sure don't. Especially in comedies the translation is just one more meta-joke for those who get it. The idea is to try to maintain Finnish as a language and i really hope they never stop renaming movies. Jason Bourne just is not the same as Medusan Verkko when you see a poster...

Wonderfully good pronunciation. Rot from the top means that you are a bit silly / stupid. The head is the top and the soft head is rotten. The Finnish translation names of the films have caused amusement even among us locals, but nowadays they are starting to appear here as well with the original names. On the other hand, direct translations would often be quite cheesy to a Finnish ear.

Ikea started that one-aisle store. If you think of IKEA, it is one long tunnel from which you can get out through the checkout. The same principle is used by several Swedish retail chains such as Rusta and Clas Ohlson. Sure, they have their own variation, but the principle is the same. The Danes just shrunk it much smaller. Niksi Pirkka is already a concept in itself.😁

i've got a lifehack for you. if you run out of coffee filters, just put the grounds in the pot with the hot water, wear a pantyhose over your head and face, and you can drink the coffee without the grounds going into your mouth.

An excellent video! However, I have to strongly be oppose against your use of the Finnish names in English! Shouldn't you use the original ones, i.e. the ones in Swedish, e.g. Snusmumriken, not Nuuskamuikkunen?

What a wonderful video! You are so great together before the camera. PS. Strangely enough, I got most of the movies - of course it was easier for me as a Finn, and as a person interested in movies, but some of the names still are somewhat strange, and I haven't seen all of the movies. PPS. And sometimes I knew which movie it was, but didn't remember the name in English...

Hurjapää = daredevil Hurja can mean many thinks such as crazy, wild, racy, fierce, mad, furious. That's way Fast and Furious is called rather "Daredevils" and not too literal "Nopeat ja hurjat".

On the mockingbird/nightingale: Finland doesn't have any birds of the Mimidae family, and nightingales are a much closer to finns as "the bird that mimics other birds." So it's literally just a localization thing, as the finnish name for mockingbird, "matkijalintu," whilst being technically correct, doesn't invoke the same kind of feelings as "Satakieli"

This reminds me of the Borat treatment of Kazakhstan. LIke many countries, Finland was caught between the two empires of Russia and Sweden. A lot of ethnic people never had the opportunity to form their own nation. The Soviets even tried to recapture Finland during the 2018 Finnish civil war by supplying weapons to the Finnish Red Guard.

I'm very disturbed by the woke takeover of the moomin brand. This is not what the moomins are about. Soo to infantile childless losers who are immersed in the queer nightmare I say: you are a passing phenomenon and the moomins are not. My grandkids will stay with the moomins well after your woke craziness will have been gone from our lives.

I am Finnish. I liked the term semi-autonomy. Indeed between 1809-1917 Finland first had a very nice proper autonomy as a grand duchy of Russia, but gradually russification started, until there was nothing left of the autonomy by 1917.

Not a cryptid, not based on myth and (I hope) no one over the age of 6 thinks they are real... also not a hippo 🥸 You, like all of us Finns, have so many of their coffee mugs, is 80% due to the design and quality of the Arabia mugs themselves, but enough trying to be a smart-ass, thanks for the cool video :) 10:30 Yes, then the completely illegal Japanese Moomin animation that was made without any notice or permission from Tove Jansson featured tanks... 🤪 ps. They are well known in some parts of the World outside of Finland, just not the US. Probably comes as no surprise that they are really big in Japan as well

Scandinavia: Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Fennoscandia: Finland, Sweden and Norway. Nordics: Four before mentioned and Iceland, Greenland and Faroes. Edit: Aleksi Himself made a video about this ID stuff as well. To get the ID without the Finnish ID is to just make an appointment with the Police office and get the ID there. Make sure to ask the ID to be sent to the Police office instead of R-Kioski.
