Breakdown is a very different song than you hear from most of their catalog. It's smoky sultry sexy lilt just smolders along. The fills and transitions from the drums and bass are stellar, and the vocal gymnastics are awesome. The modulation at the end is right on the money. It's a mature piece, and that shows their sublime musicianship with restraint.

I am the biggest BMFS fan there is, but DAMN every time I listen to this I am blown away by the parts Marcus plays during the last verse. His accent chording with the bite in that tone is just fucking awesome.

I really like the song alot. It's really different. He just turned 22 like a week ago so when this all was released he was 21. Alledgedly he had been working on everything for like three years. This music though according to him was written in like 20 minutes. I heard that he was in college for music after high school real briefly. I think he left when covid hit since he went to TikTok in 2020. He's been all over in touring. He was really good in getting noticed and going viral I guess from the begining on TikTok. Yes, this is a "Texas Shuffle" in homage to a blues bar in Dallas (called "RL's Blues Palace II", since the original one burned down... ain't that the blues), part of the whole homage to Texas and Dallas that this Empire Central session was about.

Kyle, you made a comment about this being fusion, but really, this is just SWING, big-band style (albeit with more rhythm section players than a trad big-band would have). I recall reading somewhere that Maz Maher (trumpet player who wrote the tune) calls the style "New Jack Swing" see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_jack_swing

Yeah, the drummers described how they do it - they work it beforehand who is going to play which phrase and then use facial cues to give a heads up during the tune. They never overlap backbeats.
