The Italian Radio Hour - From El Camino de Santiago to the path to Italian Citizenship
This week on The Italian Radio Hour - After years of working as a social worker and psychology instructor, Suzanne Maggio walked El Camino de Santiago in Spain traveling solo. She was 60 when she did it and is a big advocate for solo travel.
"There is never a right time to take a big adventure". And so she did. And she prepared for it but in ways that, along the way, she realized were too connected to the material aspect of the "camino" versus what she experienced, a true "camino" of the soul.
She is now 65 and, has taken three long solo walking trips. One was the third leg of the Via Francigena in Italy. It starts in the Tuscan town of Lucca and ends in Rome. The walk took her 19 days to complete. She says it was gorgeous, the food was incredible, and the people were wonderful. Her walk finished at the Vatican.
She has written a book about walking the Camino called Estrellas: Moments of Illumination Along El Camino de Santiago and currently working on her next book on the experiences along Via Francigena.
I interviewed her about her book and her travels, and her inner journey throughout these "camini", and her journey to Italian Citizenship.

Great interview! I like the way Luca explained the importance of experience when it comes to cooking, and the way that he constantly strives for improvement. It seems that despite winning the prestigious MasterChef award, he has remained very down to earth. Italy is number one on my bucket list, one of the reasons being their delicious food.

I just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you for a wonderful interview with Erica. Yesterday, I received Erica’s new book, Liguria in Cucina. What a beautiful labor of love! Her book is not your typical cookbook but more -- the origins and influences that make Ligurian cuisine what it is today. Your interview was so timely, especially Erica’s comments on how she makes pesto, as I was getting ready to harvest my last Basil (the large leaf variety sold here in Central California). Listening to her relate her technique in making pesto and the fact that she refrigerated her EVOO was helpful and makes so much sense. I’m ordering the basil seeds (from Seeds of Italy) so that I can grow my own small-leafed authentic Genovese basil for next year’s pesto. No more elephant sized Trader Joe’s basil! I enjoyed her mentioning the area around Chiavari. Our family’s roots are in the hills above Chiavari and Carasco, in an small area called Terrarossa. I have been to Genoa several times but would love just one more trip to meet Erica and take one of her cooking classes. -- Linda Bacigalupi (Bacigalupo)

This man is so knowledgeable. Every time I listen to him, I learn something new. In this conversation, I learned that the Roman military was at one time made up primarily of the wealthy. I learned a few other things too, such as the fact that our modern day fascination with “mixed martial arts” isn’t as unique as we like to think it is, and that female gladiators are pretty much a myth. Thanks for sharing this interview.
