Lake Dora in the new Husky A-1C
Переглядів 4,5 тис.3 роки тому
A short 3 minute flight from Tavares Seaplane Base to the beach at Mount Dora’s historic Lakeside Inn. This is a 2021 Husky A-1C 180 on Wipline 2100a floats. I included startup and shutdown, but cut out some boring taxi footage while I was chasing alligators! The Husky is manufactured by Aviat Aircraft in Afton, Wyoming and the Wipline floats are manufactured in South St. Paul, Minnesota.

SeaBear L-45 Amphibian Flight, Samara Russia

Though I did prefer the larger L-65 airplane (other video), my first SeaBear flight was in this slightly smaller L-45. Chief pilot and designer Dmitry Grekhov took me under his wing, offering constant advice and tips, but I'll admit to being comfortable in the airplane from the first flight.

A perfect afternoon on the Volga River in Samara Russia with SeaBear chief pilot and designer, Dmitry Grekhov. I went to Russia specifically to spend a few days in this extraordinary and unique amphibian. This particular airplane, "Southern Sun," belongs to world-explorer Michael Smith, and was in the final phases of flight testing before delivery. You'll no doubt become familiar with this mach...
Short Clip Landing the Husky - Florida Backcountry

Another view of one of my favorite wilderness locations along the St. Johns River in central Florida. No need for super short field landing distance technique here as there is plenty of firm sand and safe runoff area.
Short Clip Sandbar Landing in the Husky - Florida Backcountry Aviation

Short clip of some not-so-extreme Florida backcountry wilderness flying. The water levels in the St. Johns River are fairly low in the winter, making these amazing spots for safe off-airport landing practice.

Dan, Kerry and I out for some exploring around the St. Johns River east of Orlando. This area is a seaplane pilot's dream! And yes, at around 5:40, all those dark spots in the water are alligators. No swimming out here!

New Aviat Husky A-1C short flight X61 - FA83

This is the brand new A-1C 180 with all the 2018 improvements! Since we don't have fuel at our grass strip, you have to hop to the next airport just a couple miles away for fuel. Here's the typical fuel run without music or extensive editing.
I never saw a 140 with cowl vents and windscreen brace. Do you know why those were added?
I haven't flown (or seen) this airplane in a while but if I remember correctly the vents are part of the O-290 (135hp) conversion and the V brace is one of the visible parts of the optional Cessna float kit. Floats add significant stress to the airframe so additional bracing/strengthening is needed to go from wheels to floats.
@@kevinoaks Makes sense, thanks! Very cool video.
Imagine this mofo with 200hp lycomings!
You can get it with the Lycoming IO-360 200hp engines, or the Rotax 915 or 916. Slight differences in the airframe structure to accommodate the different engines. The aircraft performs much better (especially at higher altitudes) and uses much less fuel with the lighter turbocharged engines. Has more useful load too without having to drag around the Lycoming dinosaurs.
What’s your gross weight and useful load looking at buying a similar plane
This airplane belonged to a float flying club where I was a member. I flew it often but I don't remember the exact specs. The owner has since put it back on wheels and ditched the floats. It was a pretty good performer with 1 person. Not so much with 2. And forget loading it up on a hot day!!
I guess I need to have a bunch of money fall out of the sky onto me....I WANT one of those! BTW, what were the various conditions for the takeoff and how long (distance) was the takeoff run on the amphibs (either from your experience of out of the manual)? It appears from the video that the takeoff run was about 37 seconds...does that seem like what is typical at that elevation and in the conditions?
Dan, the take-off run in the video was not rushed or intended to be a demonstration of a maximum performance takeoff. I was simply cruising and enjoying a fun day on the water. One can typically expect a 10-15ish second takeoff run on water if trying for maximum performance. I would be happy to take you for a flight in the Husky if you like. Come see me at Oshkosh or kevin@aviataircraft.com.
How fast are you going on take off?
About 55mph
@@kevinoaksI can’t fly 55!
Very cool. Nice plane. Looks like a lot of fun.
Looks pretty tight in that cabin, side-by-side. I thought the pa-22 was wider than that? What engine do you have in it?
The aircraft was borrowed for a week, and it was a few years ago so I don't remember exactly what unit it had in it. It was 160hp. I remember that!
So what happens if the weather gets grappy while you are up and the water has gotten choppy?
If the weather is super crappy or forecasted to be so, you don't go flying with this airplane. If the water gets choppy you simply land in the choppy water. You fly this type of aircraft on inland lakes where the water is reasonably predictable. This isn't an open ocean bird!
Looks awesome, If lived in an area where there are a lot of floatplane landing opportunity I would love to have one of these. Great video
Haha it's in the reeds. Cool video
Good show
Nice ! I will be in the keys for the next couple weeks, makes me wish I had my husky with me.
Did JB sell that plane?
World’s slowest twin? Not that I dislike it. Just asking.
There are no fast seaplanes.
@RootBeerGMT doesn't the Kodiak 900 do about 200kts?
135hp, very nice. I had my C140 just on wheels with a Continental 90 & she struggled on wheels in summer
Hi super video how does it fly
Hi what engine is in the Cessna
Lycoming O-290
Hi is the cockpit quiet
Most badass bushplane on the planet!
Cool video Kevin. I’d for sure like that plane if I lived there
YOU ARE LIVING MY DREAMS....I hope to be doing this by next year when I move to FL.
Nice Glassy Water Takeoff
Where in Florida?
Will it land on the Salton sea?
Thanks Republicans for funding this aircraft.
How's that? Hey, it's a cool plane.
4:50 is all that red tide? or just optical illusion?? I'd absolutely love to fly a Searey!~!~!~
why is the water green
Well, I'm no biologist, but my understanding is that many of the freshwater lakes in Florida have very high algae concentrations. Especially in the summer when water temps are high.
Ok I’m from northern Ontario and the water is very clean so I have never seen that before. Well at least you don’t freeze during the winter
Awesome video. Thanks for not putting dumb music in it!
Thanks. I like dumb music, but I like the sound of airplanes even better. I'll leave the fancy editing to the pros!
Best vid!
Hey, fellow 120/140 owner here, do you happen to have any drawings for that V-Brace? Looking to get one/have one made for mine. Thanks!
Hi Tamer. No, unfortunately I do not. The airplane is owned by Jones Bros Seaplanes in Tavares, Florida now. I belonged to their float flying club which included use of this 140. Prior to that though, it was owned by Seaplane Pilots Association President, Steve McCaughey. He knew a lot about the airplane's history. You might find him through SPA.
So is it a community secret? I’ve yet to see a video or hear discussion on one key point - how do you get in/out of a SeaRey (or any non-float amphib) while it’s in the water?! Love these airplanes...how do they hold up in Florida salt?
As with most seaplanes, at some point your feet are going in the water. In the case of the Searey, if you can't put the gear down and taxi up on the shore, you have to get out of the airplane and get wet. Salt water (and salt air) cause a lot of corrosion issues, but with extensive, meticulous preparation and ongoing inspections, it is manageable. If you don't go into salt water, your airplane will last longer but you will miss out on some of the best adventures!
Thanks Kevin! Just making sure I wasn’t crazy. (Well, at least not for that reason.) No doubt, looking forward to some additional ratings to expand that a bit!
@@kevinoaks is it only Searey Elite that's able to taxiing to the beach with its landing gear down?
@@kaikart123 All modern Seareys are amphibious with essentially the same landing gear system.
@@kaikart123 I do this all the time in flight sim with this plane, great fun 😁
Can a pilot with only a Light Sport rating also get a float plane rating?
Yes. A sport pilot can get a light sport seaplane endorsement! There is a great video by Paul Bertorelli on this here m.ua-cam.com/video/KQ7LN0hG1tE/v-deo.html
Do you run bigger tyres than stock on your Searey? Looks like it! Cool.
Just the stock size (same size as a standard 172 tire). The hub will handle bigger bush tires, but pushing those bigger tires through the water with the gear down is an issue.
Very cool Kevin. Jealous.
Hey Kevin, we miss you at PA!!!
Nice.
Great video! What kind of distance does it take for takeoff and landings?
Well, it's no beast off the water, but certainly better than a cub. Maybe a good 15-17 second takeoff in normal conditions with one person. Add a passenger and you can easily double that!
O-290 conversion?
It is an O-290!
That's a nice vintage float plane :) Thanks for the video.
