Bhutan's Organic Dream (Channel News Asia)
This is an abridged version of our full story that was aired on the Amazing Asia programme on Channel NewsAsia.
For the full story, pls visit ua-cam.com/video/SYRren9IjQs/v-deo.html
Synopsis
It is a beautiful dream on par with the legendary Shangri-La: a farming country that produces only 100 per cent organic greens. The goal is all the more attractive because it fits in with Bhutan's drive towards sustainable living, as set out in the country's Gross National Happiness philosophy.
But the challenges are great. Many Bhutanese farmers live in remote villages, while others find that their crops do not thrive without pesticides and fertilizers. The country only produces 60 per cent of the crops it needs, never mind whether they are organic or not.
We find out what the Bhutanese have to say about their Organic Dream.

Seeking Happiness: Bhutan's Internal Migrants By TRINH HOANG LY The world knows Bhutan as the Himalayan kingdom that promotes happiness over economic wealth and tries to protect its pristine natural environment by regulating tourist arrivals. But inside, Bhutan is in many ways similar to other developing countries. Its economy grew at 8.1 percent in 2011, and construction sites line the newly-p...

The Go-Far team went down to this Bhutanese book launch and learnt more about the ubiquitous prayer flag that colours their mountainous landscapes. Here's their report.
Maybe organic farming produces less food but food grown this way has far more nutrients than the mass produced rubbish. So you don’t need to eat tons of it to keep healthy.

Hello brother 🙂 from java ☀️ indonesia 🇮🇩
Is Bhutan still free and independent?
Bless your country and people - Long may you thrive in peace and harmony!
I would love to learn more from Bhutan about Organic Agriculture.
Anyone interested in export to Kolkata fresh organic products. Like carrots, capsicon etc Bhutan is nearer to Kolkata,I am willing to buy
Good
YES! NO CHEMICALS, use Copper tools to also enrich the soil, IRON is NO GOOD. Once you use Copper tools, produce will grow healthier with less water, which will improve with time!
Shame Bhutan
Bhutanese should master the Permaculture since you have a well maintained forest. Your products for export will be the most organic & purest for sure.
check with isral ..they are doing organic farm ..
My God, what a beautiful country...
@ Kesang Tshomo Misconception. Weeds are not detrimental to crops, They are helpful as they capture minerals to the soil and should naturally be alongside with crops for most efficient planting (yes it's a large claim). Do not use any non-organic chemical pesticides as that is what attracts pests. Once your soil, air and water are organic and clean, your crops will become naturally resistant and pest free. For soil: kelp, granite/basalt/magnetite, coconut husk mulch. Kelp has sea minerals (iodine) -best; Granite for its paramagnetic crop growth. For water use a product like Super Imploder by Dan Winters to structure the water. This combination will create largest and healthiest crops. To increase production while retaining plant minerals, use aquaponics. Grandpa Farm in Japan is nice example of Hydroponics for mass production.
thanks so much for sharing the good tips!
I liked the narrator...huh
ive got a solution if you are willing to talk
One of the best initiative taken by Bhutanese government. This is a good research presented, however, i do not agree 100%; dont weigh everything by monitory profits. She should do more research about the sustainability of organic farming. Better give some examples of biggest conventional farmers in North America, India, Oceania, and Africa. Talk a little bit about health of Bhutan. Maybe it will be a good research site for comparing health effects of conventional farming with organic farming.
Organic may be expensive but it is worth investing . It is good for health, good for environment, above all fetches premium price in the market. Our people should not just grow but not how to market and have entrepreneurial skills. Going organic does not mean everything has to be manually done. Government should provide subsidy, training , and provide access to finances so that people can invest in machineries and equipment that can increase productivity and lower costs.
Mr. Gangi Reddy, good to see that you are promoting organic agriculture in your area. Iam from tamil Nadu ,my father is practising organic farming in 10 acre land. Can you provide your mail id to share any useful informations..
Congratulations to Bhutan for advancing BACK to nature, even in the face of adversity. Hopefully we can all follow your example. :)

Hello farmer Sangey
Well done with the research. Its a good document. I do believe that to go 100 % organic would be quite a far sighted one but never the less we can achieve a part of 100, that itself will be a achievement.
nice camera work and editing, great visual journalism.
Thanks so much for this, this offers great insight into the strategy and the future of Bhutan, a truly unique kingdom. Thanks.
