      @@myquantitative No i randomly stumbled upon the competition. Did not knew anything about Finance but I went through one of the world’s toughest exam (search JEE Advanced) so my Maths was really strong. I translated that skill into Quant by quickly picking up the basic finance terminologies i needed to understand for the sake of the competition. I am open to Data Science roles if I get a higher pay offer. Although in the past whenever I got an offer my current employer has matched the amount and kept me from switching

    You can try another approach, may or may not be better. g*(g - 1) = k , N*(N - 1) = 2*k , solving the equations for positive roots, N = -1 + sqrt(1+ 8k) / 2 , g = N = -1 + sqrt(1+ 4k) / 2 , k = 6 satisfy both.

      @dr.woozie7500 Meh, don't hype up my research that much. In the words of my professor, most undergrad research amounts to nothing, they are merely chances for undergrads to experience research. Bear in mind, my untraditional background coupled with my late transition and preparation, I am not the Ideal Candidate #1, hardly the sort of candidate Jane Street or Citadel are begging to sign up. Fortunately, the quant industry is bigger than just the biggest names on the street and fortunately, life is long and I am grateful for having secured my foothold and am enjoying my time growing within the industry

    10/10 insightful, relevant and real. My top takeaways: * Apply to adjacent roles to improve interview preparedness and also because skills are highly transferable, why not. * Evaluate how much time to spend on take home assignments and ask more questions to rule out a waste of time and resources * Connect and explore relevant people in the firm on LinkedIn, build a profile and prepare early * Apply, Apply, Apply it’s a numbers game * Journal what went right, what went wrong, top interview questions to prepare better next time! Hope this helps. Thanks for the awesome content and best wishes.

      @Mastercane98 Thank you, I eventually received and accepted an offer at a buy-side firm. Nothing shiny like Jane Street or Citadel in New York making a billion per minute, but ultimately a foothold within the industry nevertheless and still a job (especially in this economy). Learnt lots and plenty more to go. From here on, it is down to me to learn and grow and push myself should I so wish.

  • @doraemon402

    3 rounds is already demented nonsense. A phone call and an in office interview are and should be more than enough. And these "take home assignments" are just free work, disgusting and pathetic, that's why there's always supposed to be a trial period where you work for them for a month and get paid less just to make sure you're worth it. But the reason why it's not a simple and effective process is because HR needs to look busy and make it overcomplicated because "the longer the process the better" when it's quite the opposite because you have to be kinda crazy to stay till the end of the process. I can assure you that reading a CV and asking questions to the candidate for 40 minutes is more than enough to know whether they deserve the chance. If so, offer them a 1 month contract with average market pay, which is still terrible pay, and, if they show they're good, now you offer them the proper contract. It's not hard, they just love to make you think it is. If you operate a relatively small company, my best advise is literally to fire everyone in HR (they're just resource consuming leeches) and do the hiring yourself. Much better results since then. 10 minutes to properly read every CV received (stop using these useless CV scanning programs, most can't even properly read CVs), phone call if adequate to resolve questions in regard to the CV and availability and a 40-45 minute interview to simply gauge interest and capabilities. Go straight to the point and don't waste your or their time.

    Hi! Curious to ask about a point that you mentioned regarding doing background research on your interviewers. In the particular example where you saw that your interviewer was a long distance runner, how did you bring it up in a natural way during the interview? Like do you tell them that you saw it on their profile or do you instead try to embed it naturally into the conversation. PS. Bought your cover letter +resume bundle - pretty helpful. Currently preparing for the internship application cycle!

      @myquantitative 3 місяці тому

      @savaok255 Thank you so much for the support! Would love to be kept updated on your progress, do drop me an email, I want to collect stories of individuals such as yourself! Regarding the particular example. I weaved the question in when I asked about the various lifestyle events that the firm held. Big firms like to portray the positive aspects of working for them so these should be broadcasted on their website (in fact, LinkedIn would be better for such posts, so definitely check-in there). In fact, this particular fact that I found about my interviewer was when he was with a previous firm! Many firms also offer discount memberships or even fully subsidised memberships to gyms, so that could be an easy launch point. If they asked how you found out, a simple " I googled your name and it showed up" will suffice, no need to elaborate too much and come across as a stalker If I recall the conversation was started along the lines like this, "I saw that the firm recently organised X event, that looked fun, are such activities common at this firm? I know you're quite the runner yourself, how did you find the event? I bet you run to work as well!

I don't want to sound mean but every potential employee when see you videos on YT... what they gonna think about you. It's weird to brag about losing 400 times in the row. Imagine playing CS:GO and dying over 400 times without single kill. Every sane person would say 'it's not for me, I am out'.

      Hedge fund is a very competitive area, plus he is an international student, it is very likely that he got rejected automatically due to sponsorship reasons regardless of how qualified he is and what the positions are. It is very common to get rejected for 99%of the roles in hedge fund.

    Hi, I am currently pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science. I am slowly gaining interest in quant. Would you say I can still become a quant with this degree? It's not as rigorous as a degree in pure mathematics, and most of the time I'll be using R. My plan to break into quant would be to pursue a masters in quant finance after a few years of working as an actuary, and probably some quant internships after my masters before landing a permanent role. What are your thoughts on this. Btw, really interesting video, quite a very nice way to solve it. Though I doubt I could think of a solution straight away in an interview setting, at least not at my current level. Thank you in advance 👍👍

      @zigbo5659 Thank you for the support and I appreciate the comment! Every little bit helps the algorithm! You can still become a quant with that degree. There are many people with degrees that are not as rigorous as pure mathematics who become quants. Plenty of engineering students have made such a switch. There is plenty of mathematics there but as somebody who went through such a degree, I wouldn't place it within the mathematically rigorous category yet. Your plan is the safest path. A Masters in Financial Engineering is the typical path for individuals looking to make the transition. who lack a sufficiently transferable skillset to enter an entry level quant role e.g. engineers. Assuming you have a sufficiently strong mathematics background (in fact your grounding in statistics and probability from Actuarial Science will be an excellent foundation here), the MFE will serve as a "second chance", equipping you with a more focus set of quantitative finance knowledge and most importantly, allowing you to be considered as a student again and apply for the coveted internships and research experience. With this refreshed C.V. in-hand, coupled with some months of interview prep, you should be able to land an entry-level quant role. Of course the usual caveats apply with regards to picking the right school and programme. Unfortunately, I do not have experience here since I do not possess a MFE, but the UA-camr Dimitri Bianco has spoken about this at length on his channel, so I defer all opinions to him on this matter! My only concern would be your programming experience, I'm unsure how much your degree taught you or if you are self-taught, but I would INSIST on getting proficient in Python and if time permits (unlikely), in a C language as well. Your MFE programme should have a course teaching you one of the C languages but I wouldn't recommend having that as your first experience, the C languages are not kind to beginners, much less if the instructor is lackadaisical in teaching it. In the meantime, before you start your MFE, I would also recommend picking up as much machine learning knowledge as possible. This can open up more opportunities during your MFE and hence, affecting your trajectory after your MFE as well. If you're not already familiar with Python, this will be a bonus since you will definitely have to use Python during your process of studying machine learning. Will the role you eventually land be at a top-firm with the famous eye-watering compensations? That's another question and also a function of how hard you push yourself! Whereabouts are you based in the world? Always curious who are clicking on my videos!

    absolutely brutal application process. 7 days for one firm should be illegal. but i guess thats what happens when you want one of the most lucrative and coveted jobs itw.

    • @myquantitative
      @myquantitative 4 місяці тому

      @trytofindareasonwhy Indeed, that's the case for other lucrative roles in Private Equity, Software Engineering, Investment Banking, Hedge Funds. While not all firms have such brutal processes, increasingly, these practices are trickling down to the "lower-tier" firms, I shudder to think how the job application process will look like for the next generation. Brutal indeed.

    Hello, I am starting my research into applying for a Quant Analyst job in USA. I am completing my MSc in FInancial Engineering from WorldQuant University. Do you think online masters has any chance of landing a job?

    • @myquantitative
      @myquantitative 4 місяці тому

      @SilverBalverine I won't sugar coat the truth but the chances of landing a quant role with an online masters will be slim to none. The quant world and the wider finance industry is elitist in it's selection criteria. There are already plenty of graduates from the top institutions competing for the roles. Your best bet is to attend a full-time in-person MSc programme at a known university. All the best!

    Thanks a lot for your very detailed presentation, full of good hints. But I (and maybe others) miss one important point: after such a long and tiring process did you got an interesting position ?

    • @myquantitative
      @myquantitative 4 місяці тому

      @HiltonFernandes Yes I eventually received an offer. To be clear, this wasn't in one of the typical ultra competitive firms with eye watering compensation, but it still pays above average for my location, it is in a small growing team with whom I get along well, the office is gorgeous with a great supportive culture and I can see myself growing within the role for years to come. The way I see it, the journey has just begun, entering into a quant role made me realised just how little I knew and the endless knowledge there is to pick up, it is exciting yet intimidating but it is to me, the right mix for a career : ) Are you currently applying for quant roles yourself?

    hey dude, i hear a lot of people without finance/trading background going into quant. what i'm confused about is, how do they land the job without the finance/trading background if the interview process involves finance/trading type assessments? Like Options Pricing theory & backtesting questions etc.

    • @myquantitative
      @myquantitative 4 місяці тому

      @fadedsedated You are correct. These job descriptions never explicitly state a preference for prior finance knowledge, but it is an open secret that plenty of prep work goes into tackling the interviews. The depth of knowledge expected for interviews isn't particularly deep at all, I find the more challenging aspect being the range of topics you could be questioned on. Many of my peers picked up this knowledge through intense self-study and self-exploration, interacting with alumni and seniors and taking part in industry-led events such as hackathons, trading competitions, prediction competitions. The intense competition for such roles, particularly at coveted firms, brings with it an increasingly higher bar for selection. While firms could, in theory, teach everything about finance to a brilliant STEM student, why not instead pick a STEM student who was committed enough to explore the topics themselves? It can be frustrating to read descriptions that say " Prior experience in finance is not required, we will teach you everything you need to know", employers would still pick the STEM student who was motivated enough to self-teach themselves. This is not exclusive to Quant roles, look at Investment Banking, Consulting, Private Equity, Hedge Funds, Software engineering, Data Science. There is no one university course that will equip you with everything you need for the job or the interview process. Hence, these roles do except people from a wide range of backgrounds, as long as they can survive the interview process.
