You would’ve had to been a hard core denialist to admit you were shocked at this news.

When Jerry passed, my younger- brother woke me up to give me the news: he didn't get the significance of it- He knew I was into the dead, but not how much of a formative part of my youth that they had been. He did sense something, though, and was kind, and, since then (even though he was an 15-ish year old kid) we have had a a bit of understanding (acceptance?) that has been touchstone for our relationship since (we had ever been at odds, and are still, but just then we understood one another.) This the Grateful Dead. I know that sounds trite, simplistic, and even cheap (hippy bullshit), but, it was not that- it was, IS. Another friend, who had taken me to my first show called very soon after that- he said I wouldn't believe it (I would put it up to mere chance), but when he heard about Jerry, he put his player on random and 'He's Gone' came on. Another one- in 9/11/01, I was pressure washing a home for a customer, and she called out from her doorj, asking why we were working. We were working because we had been paid to, of course! But, she invited us inside, just in time to see the Towers fall. We were all speechless. Then she put on some grateful dead and we all understood without enunciation that this was Right, Here, Right Now... it was an articulation of something that was otherwise past expression. I remember thinking how much everything had just changed, and being a 4th generation Japanese American, I was terrified for what would happen to thw Muslims in the US after this- but, I remember hearing 'Workingman's Dead' and thinking that maybe, mayne, everything would be okay. It has not been, but I'll never forget that little bit of hope, from the Dead, transitory as it was. I dunno... The foregoing is a bit of a ramble, but it is as clear as sunlight is in my sight, even unto today, and I wouldn't have it any other way, even though everything else fades. Who knows? I'm far too old and jaded and tempermentally pessimistic, these days, but I hope that others may find that transcendence in the music that I found once, and enjoy the Grateful Dead.

the truth needs to be told for accuracy. jerry died of an overdose. he had the heroin sunck in by a follower/dealer. jerry always smoked heroin he hated needles. and not having any way to smoke it, he was forced to snort it and he never did that and was not used to it and succumbed to the nod forever.thanks for keeping him hooked bob weir and still milking him to this day. jerry died with no one around and had barely anything meanwhile bob weir is worth almost 100 million dollars from all the licencing deals he has made with major corporations like walmart, sanuck, target, urban outfitters, gap, levis and many more.

Back then most treatment centers gave you Clonidine a BP drug and let you sweat it out. They said you can't die or very few people die from detoxing off opiates. With Jerry's health conditions he should had been put on maintenance drugs or Methadone. Treatment centers wanted you to suffer so you wouldn't come back.

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh show and they were talking about Jerry's death. A caller said as far as he was concerned it was just another dead junkie and the world was a better place. Rush agreed. Rush was doctor shopping at the time. I wonder if the rehab detoxed Jerry like most rehabs did back then? They gave you a BP med and a 12 step book.
