Well we rolled up Interstate 44 like a rocket sled on rails. We tore up all of our swindle-sheets and left 'em sittin' on the scales.

This abandoned highway would a perfect set for Hollywood post-apocalypse films Ala Mad Max.

I was there in the 90's and we went driving pretty far out into the flats. I thought maybe we could drive to the next road up north, route 30. But it was getting pretty wet so we turned around. Then had to spend an hour at the car wash spraying off salt from underneath the car. Who knows if we ever got it all off.

I like seeing abandoned infrastructure. Not that it makes me happy to see a retreat of civilization, just it's so utterly novel to see what are essentially ruins like you would find in a video game but in real life.

Even though it's abandoned, it looks better than most Commyfornia roads!!!!

I see why it got abandoned and totally makes economical sense. You know its much cheaper to have a straight strip than making bridges and connections right? The two highways were connected somewhere easier anche cheaper, than building the connecting bridges for this one in particular. Probably too much work and modifications could have costed more than doing a brand new one somewhere else, and thus, here we are

And yet, this 25 years abandoned highway looks to be in WAY better condition than half the ACTIVE highways in America! 😆

I live in NW Arkansas and used to drive over to Tulsa on Hwy 412 (Cherokee Turnpike) many times, but I haven't been over there in several years. Is this where I-44 (Will Rogers Turnpike) used to merge with 412 right at the Casino? And it's no longer in use and has been replaced with the Creek Turnpike extension? If so, I can see why they did it- I HATED that intersection where 412 came into I-44!! Especially if you were on 412 (like I was) heading west at that intersection you had to do a crazy sharp S-turn where they had to have enough room for the underpass for the eastbound folks who wanted to exit onto I-44 east.

The world is full of abandoned developments. What's so remarkable about this one? Even if you narrow it down to roads bypassed by safer ones, there are plenty. What about the disused tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike -- at least one of which was abandoned *twice* : once for a never-built railroad, again when the turnpike that finished and used it bypassed it. There's a copper mine that over many centuries was closed and "abandoned" as played out 7 times! Old Croton Aqueduct, abandoned and then a part of it reopened many years later.

The turnpike should be illegal! It's just the worst! Hardly any exits or services. I guess that reflects Oklahoma.. Why do people live there?! OOF!
