sometimes I wish that channel would care more about photography itself. Its the beauty in photography that inspires people/photographers or Directors of Photography. anyways. Thanks for that upload Katja
Yeah, I definitely wanna bring back some photo book reviews...got a couple good ones recently :)) As for other stuff, I guess I think that there are already a lot of good channels out there that cover the creative part of photography and tutorials of how to shoot or edit and such, but less channels teaching about the business side. That's what I feel I am good at and can bring to the table. I sometimes wish I could make some videos showing you behind the scenes of photo shoots, but I would need a videographer to film me, which for now I can't hire yet. Are there any specific topics you would like to see me cover?
As always, I'm curious to hear what you struggle with. Let's chat
This video was so helpful! ❤
Thanks Sofia, I’m glad it’s useful ☺️
Great tips, thanks and ❤ your video.
Absolutely agree on the reading list. I attended for the BCL and could easily still be finishing the reading years on. I think that my love of sports helped me to make friends. I suspect that undergraduate could have been trickier; I actually received a few anonymised messages over the internet which appeared to be from younger students.
It's really hard to move on from good paying job when you have family that needs support from you. :(
Yeah, I would not recommend that. Rather I would build up photography as a side hustle first if you want to get into it.
@@katjafeldmeier yeah. I would def try that. :D
Love the video
Thank you for sharing Katja.❤
Brilliant advice. And so well explained/presented.
Genau. 😊 Ich habe fragen... 😊
What’s your question? ☺️
I don't understand why people would put some emphasis on Germany vs English cultures or different accent (like someone mentioned in the comments). I feel like international so I am always happy 😊 as a puppy when I get an intelligent 🧠 discussion with a fellow clever human being... So...I am more...for the interaction...😊 It is difficult to pin point in a few phrases in a comment section...
I currently do portrait photography/editorial style for amateur models i run into scheduling problems or combating models for prices what to do if you are in this situation?
For scheduling issues, let them pay half the price upfront, so there will be less risk of cancellations. Is that the scheduling issue? For pricing: make a price list pdf that you send them. A list gives less room for negotiation. Hope that helps
In photographer too, but i really dont think that in 2024 people are giving money for photography. When u can just download them for free..sadly
it really really depends on the type of photography though...there is a lot of generic stock photography that you can just get for free or buy for pennies but if you are a skincare brand and you need your new products to be photographed, you still need to hire and pay a photographer or if you are a startup and you have a team that needs team portraits, you need to hire a photographer. or if you are a magazine that is reporting on social injustices, you need to send a photographer to cover the story. I have a video about photography niches that are lucrative and the ones that aren't. so yeah, there is still money in it, but you need to be a bit strategic about it and combine multiple things.
@@katjafeldmeier agree, BUT, i feel like if u not in some fancy city u have no chance, i tried everything near me and just no luck .. some tattoo shops and restaurants but that's it. All the corporate shops have their crew in the HQ. no matter how good u are, and how low u go with price they just won't spend money on photography...
@@ThatCarpathianG you are right that location does play a role in it. specifically for certain industries like fashion and such. and restaurants and tattoo shops are often struggling themselves... so, how about going for smaller businesses in financially strong positions? real estate, insurance, financial services etc. Or if you are in a more rural area, try the private sector: weddings, family portraits, couple shoots, engagements, baby showers, newborns - those can be very lucrative as well, depending on how well you package your services. with this stuff it can also be an advantage not to be based in a big city, because people know you, will recommend you in your community. You could also try assisting other photographers near you and see how they get business. It's definitely not an easy path but there are always ways in, so I would encourage you to keep digging if its really what you wanna do, but challenge yourself to offer stuff that solves peoples problems and that people are willing to pay for. and in the end, yes, for certain things, you might even have to consider changing your location - I mean that's why actors move to L.A., tech startup bros move to the Bay Area and models and fashion designers move to NYC - to get closer to opportunity.
Thanks for reminding me why I’m doing this! Great video 🎉
No problem 😊, I'm glad you liked it
So inspiring! Love your channel and I agree that it’s so important to try to have a community of other photographers! I live in London and I feel extremely isolated as an Artist in here and I think UA-cam would be my best shot to find and attract other creatives. Thanks for going for it and I’m sure this will be your viral video because I’ve been looking for this video for ages lol
What a lovely feedback and comment Amanda! Thank you so much. Happy to have you hear. ❤️ If there are any other similar topics you would like me to cover, please let me know. I’m always looking to cover topics here that are interesting to people. I wasn’t sure this longer form, chatty style video with less editing would be received well, but I for sure enjoyed making it. Basically a bit podcast-style
Have you thought about starting UA-cam before?
I love your content! you! KEEP IT UP ❤
Thank you so much ❤️
Hi Katja! Great video. I'm just wondering, what if I have already a Linkedin profile but related to my main profession but I would like to try this with my photography side-project?
Hi Diego, hmm good question. Depends on your main profession I guess. Would it hurt your other profession to share your photography work on the same LinkedIn page? Ortherwise you could start your own account for your photography like Diego Nanni Photography….
Thanks for a great video. Very smart and good advice. I've used LinkedIn for other professional purposes before, but not as a photographer. I had been thinking about this lately, so I do intend to put your advice into action very soon. Thanks again!
Thank you for watching and good luck with implementing your new strategy 💪💪
Thank you , I had a lindkin account a while ago but deleted it, after watching thus I activated and pushed a post out
Do you use the minolta to take photos for your clients or is it a prop?
haha good observation, both. In the thumbnail it’s a prop because I took the thumbnail on my Fuji. I have used the Minolta for client shoots in the past. Currently I’m mostly digital on client shoots or shoot medium format film
I’m a pretty well-connected guy and don’t know a single person using LinkedIn for anything more than finding a career. At least not in my area.
You could be the first one to start :)
Great video Katja. You earned a sub.
Thank you, happy to have you here.
Hi Katja, great video. The main thing I got from this is how important it is to have positive energy and attitude towards your job and life frankly, so thank you for bringing that across.
Thank you 🙏 I’m happy that came across
Enjoyed your video thanks for posting 👍
If this would actually work, then Instagram would have the same or even better effect as LinkedIn. I have been posting my work to Instagram and also displaying my professional photo work on Linked In for years now plus having my own website for people to professionally engage with me and I tell you one very important thing: If YOU don't engage with clients yourself by customer acqisition, NOBODY WILL REACH OUT FOR YOU! That is the harsh reality you have to get comfortable with. I had about 35 payed gigs this year and made good money, but none of these gigs just came to me through any platform, it was ALL ENTIRELY MY OWN ACQUISITION WORK! That is the same in any business that doesn't sell their goods in a store or targets a fundamental need of an everyday life customer. Customers don't care for YOU, they don't see you, they don't know why they should even need your services until you MAKE them. This will be the single most usefull business advise you will get all year, trust me! Stop buying into these UA-camrs... If she would make money with her actual profession (like all these scammers on this platform here) she wouldn't need your click on UA-cam for the ad-Dollar. UA-cam is her actual business model, Photography is just her hook/lure and you are the fish who are hoping to make money with photography. YOU WON'T with this BS tips! Almost nobody does anymore except a few fortunate ones, and they mostly don't even bother with UA-cam!
I'm trying to start my own consulting business and I'm using LinkedIn as a base for getting the word out and making contacts with potential clients. I'm not a photographer but I still found all your tips useful. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. Yeah I believe LinkedIn is still undervalued across the board
There is quite a disconnect between the statements "I'm a content creator" and "former Oxford graduate" when not giving us any context as to how your degree's relevant to your current profession. If it's not, it is rather redundant and pretentious to add.
Ah I see what you mean. I made a video on this channel about how my experience studying law at Oxford was pretty awful and some subs are on the channel from this video. I guess I’m trying to say I went from one to now working as a creative :)
@@katjafeldmeier I see. But I really think, adding this information doesn't do you any good. If you would have studied photography or arts at Oxford (which is in fact possible) it would be an entirely different thing, because it would provide a professional background related to your photography ambitions. But since it is not, it just comes across like "Hi, I'm Mike, I repair cars fror the living, but see my Yale diploma on the wall? Not related at all, but I just wanted to show you that I am actually not dumb in real life." Basically virtue signaling or identity signaling, which makes you come across as pretentious, especially if you feell your Oxford experience didn't get you anywhere, why even add it as a credential? Especially when it has nothing to do with your photography?
@@Project_2501I see her comment as she's implying that even a graduate from a college/university can change careers. Just because you go to college doesn't mean you have to stay in that field forever. With these popular universities, some people from them look down on others for changing careers outside of what they studied. Pretentious or not, it is what it is. I think it's a good jab towards the big universities to say she studied there and now is doing something different; breaking the mold.
Great video with helpful tips. Also, I was listening with headphones and there was a strange echo sound in your audio.
Thank you, and thanks for letting me know, I'll try to fix the audio for the next video
You’re so underrated, this is really good content, I love it ❤️
Aww that’s really sweet of you. Let’s see, maybe the channel will gain some more traction eventually ☺️🙏☺️
Thank you for this super informative video! I’ve been trying to think of different ways I can diversify how I get photography clients. And of course, since starting self employment, I have been neglecting LinkedIn 😂 So again, thank you for these tips, I will try them!
Thank you for your kind comment Tiff. I'm really happy when the content is useful to fellow photographers out there 😊
It’s a good platform to be on but I’ve found that you get way better reach with a premium, paid account. I think video content is very important on the platform as it’s getting more attention from photographers and harder to stand out but that can be a challenge if you’re not used to being on camera.
Ah interesting. I didn’t know about the reach. I also feel like Video has been increasing on that platform but I think you can still gain some traction with photo + text posts.
@@katjafeldmeier The stats you get on Premium give you a better idea of how things do. I manage a customer's Linkedin account (as part of my side-hustle!) and you can see the clear distinction on both accounts. That said, I personally don't jump in front of the camera. But I do use Canva to create Mp4 videos that autoplay to show images I've produced. Great content from you as always!
What do you think about using LinkedIn?
Linkedin has been our main source of leads for our video production company. Which is crazy to think and is the reason why I am such a believer in Linkedin. Thanks for sharing!
@@BrunoPozo4Real That makes sense, and thank you for sharing that.
Had a very similar conversation with fellow ‘togs yesterday about pricing. My take was that we should start with expenses; know what it will cost to run the business to break-even. Then figure out how many billable hours you have available in a month. Billable hours, not working hours. That provides a good baseline of where the business should be heading. I think a lot of beginners miss this step and set a price point because they see ‘easy money’ to get paid for their hobby. But the price point is not sustainable.
Very very good point you are making. I totally agree with starting at expenses and billable hours. Thank you for sharing that. I do wanna make a video specifically on the topic of pricing as well in the near future
@@katjafeldmeier Looking forward to the pricing video!
I believe hardly in the age of A.I., machine learning.... ability of software we can await that someday human qualities of their creativity and creative output can be imitated by machines. The question is what kind of quality does it bring to society. What kind of value has a photo been taken by a machine or software... ? If so imagery in quality and quantity will be the everyday "experience". On the long run it will reduce the value of art in every form. Even though photography. The more photos we produce everyday, the less value they have! We see that nowadays.
I think you are making some valid points Alecks. We need to be having more of these debates for sure. Not that it’s going to change anything 😂 but still. Photography overtook painting, cinema overtook radio, tv overtook cinema, on-demand-video overtook tv. Maybe AI will replace most photography but maybe we will find new things to do and create that can be done in person only far far away from our screens 🪐
What type of money mistakes have you made before? Please share
I kind of do everything for photography, portrait, nature, architectural, etc. I like doing all of it, but prefer to do photography in more chill environments. Can I do all of these niches and still run a successful business?
You could, but it’s much much harder to do because of lack of clarity for yourself and your clients. If you had to pick one to earn money with, which one would you pick? I would take some time and write down the ideal path for each niche. Say, you picked nature photography: what would your portfolio have to look like? Who would your clients be? How much does a nature photography gig pay? What type of hours would you have to work to be a nature photographer? What would your life look like? Etc etc. And do that for each niche that you are considering. Then pick one and go all in for this niche for 6-12 months. If you don’t like it, you can pivot after that time to a different niche and try to go all in into that one. If you see a restaurant and on their menu they offer sushi and pizza, and Indian food, and Chinese and tacos…how likely is it that they will be exzellent at any of the dishes? And how likely is it that you would trust them? Hope that helps ☺️
Since public schools have for many centuries prepared students for Oxford and continue to educate students to be able to cope with the standards of Oxford, why shouldn't they expect to be setting the culture of Oxford? Working class people only started attending Oxford in the last maybe 40 years. They don't get to swap out the culture that built Oxford for their culture. No. When you go to Oxford, you accept that you change for Oxford, if you are different. If you don't like it, go to a place where working class culture is the norm, like a pub or a football game. It's an upper middle class institution. This might be grounds for feeling depressed (as you do) but only because you haven't come to terms with the fact that elite education comes with elite people. If you had accepted that elite people exist and just let them flow around you, you would have been fine.
Interesting term…"elite people"…
@@katjafeldmeier People from elites, if you like. It matters little.
You are from Munich? (those boxes gave it away I thnik.)
Nope Berlin 🙂
Congratulations on a great year and excellent content on UA-cam! I watched your video where you show and rate your cameras, and I was wondering if you're still using the Fuji X-T4. How does it perform in a studio setting when connected to lights, etc.? I'd love to hear your opinion if you don't mind sharing.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes, I’m still using the xt4 and it works effortlessly in a studio setting. I have made some comparisons with fullframe cameras such as Nikon z7ii and also with the fuji GFX medium and they do produce higher resolution and sharpness, so I am thinking of upgrading after 4 years. But I still love the xt4 and think that it performs well for most things. Like the images published in the magazine and for vogue were all shot on that camera ☺️
@@katjafeldmeier Wonderful, thanks for your reply! It's great to hear that the xt4 has served you well :)
How has your photographic year been so far?
Your content is so valuable, thank you <3
Im really glad it’s helpful ❤️
What about nature photography?
I’m not too familiar with careers in that niche. I could imagine that’s it’s pretty small and thus competitive. Probably similar to art photography in the sense that making books and selling prints is not a very sustainable income. Are you experienced in that niche?
when approaching and asking people for a pic, it's portrait not street photography
Agree to disagree ;)
Thank you for sharing. You made a special point - unpleasant feeling from images. I have same view, usually those kind of images has visual impact, and make me have deeper emotion.
Thank you for commenting and sharing your perspective. Yes, I had another interesting experience with this recently in a Gregory Crewdson exhibition where my partner had a visceral reaction to the images and had to actually leave the room because of the unease he felt.
