In this video, my friend and I explore 5 different types of banh mi sandwiches in Saigon, Vietnam. There are a variety of banh mi in the city. Most of them are street food and one of them is on a cart that is pushed around in the streets. I know that you are probably familiar with banh mi sandwiches, but there may be different types that you haven't tried.

In this video, my laptop broke. For some reason, my screen just developed these purple/pink lines. I had been using it all day, but then in the afternoon, the screen turned into this. When I looked it up on youtube, it seems like it happens for a lot of the newer Macbook Pro's. So then, I needed to do some research to find a place to fix my computer... In Ho Chi Minh City, there are a lot of co...

Voted as one of the most luxurious hotels and resorts in Vietnam by Vietcetera, Radisson Blu Cam Ranh was an amazing place. I had a 3 night stay at this resort earlier this year. At the time, I was browsing through Booking.com and Agoda for a place to go to with my girlfriend. Then, I found this place. When we got there, we were fortunate enough to get upgraded from a hotel room to a private vi...

    Why would my Vietnamese father cheat on his Vietnamese family, sleep with a white American woman and make me, and then abandon me??? Why won’t my dna match cousins answer my messages? It doesn’t leave a good impression of Vietnamese culture or relations to me

      My wifes father suddenly appeared when my wife was 23. I can only think at that time he was young and didn't think about the consequences. My wife is forever scarred though as her Mum abandoned her too.

      I'm sorry you went through all that. It's a difficult question to answer. @DevineOne has an interesting point. It also seems quite common in Vietnam to have infidelity. I'm again sorry it happened to you. I think it would benefit to find some inner peace within yourself and learn to let go of the anger, but it is your choice. In the end, we don't have control of what others do. We get to decide how we react to it. I hope you feel better about things eventually. ❤️

    All difficulties aside, you at least started out right; you got the sounds before you tried to write them. Failure to encourage this is one of the biggest problems in the teaching of Vietnamese. (It's a problem in language teaching in general, but we're talking about Vietnamese here, so…) [Linguistic geekery warning]: I think one of the biggest roadblocks to non-Vietnamese when they start learning, is that they almost always start with the alphabet, without spending time just listening. Then they confuse letters for sounds. What does that mean? For example, I hear people say that "in Vietnamese there are three kinds 'O's, or three kinds of 'O' sounds." Here's the thing: There is no such thing as "an 'O' sound." 'O' is a symbol, it's not a sound. It can represent any sound you want it to. O, Ô and Ơ are three very different sounds, but because people learn to think of them as "different kinds of 'Os'," they often end up pronouncing them as and English O. They are reading, not listening. And yet no English speaker would never confuse the sounds "aw" and "uh," or "uh" and "oh". Nobody would pronounce "bought" as "butt," (o/ơ equivalent) or "fun" as "phone" (ơ/ô rough equivalent). The point is, English speakers don't mispronounce those words because they are unable to pronounce the vowels; there are (almost) equivalent vowels in English. It's not the same as a Spanish speaker confusing "sit" and "seat" because they can't pronounce the short "i". Here, the problem is that they just have not been taught to listen and hear them. Learning to really listen is even more important when learning the tones. Teachers talk about the tones, they describe them, they do hand movements. And learners get the idea that Vietnamese tones are just about your voice going up or down or staying level. But if we stop limiting what we listen to when we try to distinguish between tones in use, we will hear that there's a lot more going on. Contrast bò and bỏ. Whether it's northern or southern speech, there's still more going on that distinguishes those words, than mere pitch. Listen to the change in voice quality in "bỏ".

      This is a very interesting perspective. I agree with you about how we can give words in English to correlate with the sound in the Vietnamese word. When a friend asks me how to pronounce a word, I say it and then I give them a word that had that sound in English. Like uh for ơ. Great perspective! ✊

    • @sazji
      @sazji Рік тому

      @@NhieuLife It was kind of long-winded and I probably could have said it in fewer words. 😀 But I'm glad it made sense at least. There's a school of language teaching that recommends just listening to the language without understanding anything for quite a while before starting to learn words and grammar. It might be a bit impractical, but there is definitely something to be said for just focusing completely on sounds without the distraction of "is this the right word," or was my grammar correct." And it's definitely harder to correct wrong pronunciation when it's been bound to words and meaning that we repeat and internalize wrong.
