2024 Ironman 70.3 Waco - My First Ironman Event
I finally made it to the finish line of my first Ironman event. This was my experience at the 2024 Ironman 70.3 in Waco, TX. It's been a long two year journey of training, setbacks, triumphs and more. Thank you so much to my family and friends for all the support. It's been a long journey but I made it!

My First Century Ride - The 2024 Hotter'n Hell Hundred
Переглядів 7 тис.5 місяців тому
This past weekend I conquered my first century ride. A 100 mile cycling race across the North Texas, Wichita Falls countryside in the blistering heat called the Hotter'n Hell Hundred. It was a challenge unlike any other I've faced but I got it done. My brother-in-law, Stephen, invited me on a whim and I said yes. If you're considering doing the HHH in the future, watch this video to get the sco...

Ironman 70.3 Training - Week 18 - Build Phase

I'm in week 18 of my training program working towards Half Ironman Waco, 70.3. This week is part of the build phase where the training intensity is gradually increasing. I worked in specific swim drills including catch-up, one-arm, finger drag, and high elbows. It was my birthday and I got an Insta360 camera. It was a lot of fun to film with which is why this week's video is much longer. Links ...

how old are you at the time of the race?
@@distrvl5893 39
Thats kinda nasty .. i definitely dont want a hot breath filled bottle
@@lamplight1636 🤣
Your headass would actually think the bottle smell would stay like that 💀
When you are opening it, it is to refill it or to clean it. The hot breath goes out anyway.
Great job. Well earn finish!
@@TheTrashlete thanks! Can't wait to do it again.
Congrats Dale! That's an awesome accomplishment! Way to grit through a ton of adversity out there. It takes guts to get up after a crash and finish the race. Loved that the family was out there to support! Looking forward to what's next!
Thanks, DREW! (not Dan) It was an incredible feeling crossing that finish line. Going to keep chasing that feeling all the way to a full IM.
Loved it!! What did u put in the AI to generate the plan? Tkssssss
I was just very specific. Age, weight, gender, current pace, HR zones and HRV status from Garmin. Then I gave the date of the race and my goals for race day. I let it know my schedule every week. It would generate my schedule. At the end of every week, I'd give it metrics from my workouts and let it know how I was feeling and it would generate the next week. If I wanted to work on something specific, like my running, I would let it know and it would adjust.
@@dogburn thank you a lot, im gonna try next week! =)
Nice work! Randomly stumbled on your video. I've done 3 - 70.3 races and they are so fun and addicting! congrats on your first!
Thanks man! Ya I'm excited to tackle a full IM. I had so much fun even through the pain.
Late to the party. Memories. Great job!!! Your video described my experience entirely! Last year I tried this one and couldn't complete due to heat exhaustion. This year I hydrated better and made it through by stopping at every aid station after 80 miles. I don't plan on doing it again. 😀 Lol. Plenty of other Centuries to conquer. But this one is a bucket list for sure.
I'm totally down for going back and doing the 100K just to see the Airforce base route, but that 100 miler is a killer.
Solid work and Congrats! I've done Arizona, Austin, and the Redman but looking to do Waco next year. Keep it up!
Thanks! I'm eyeing Arizona for my first full IM. Waco was really fun, but it was pretty hot. Hopefully next year has better weather.
I just checked your stats you finished just after I did! I started cramping on the bike, caused me to basically walk the whole half marathon. Wish I could have just ran my comfort 12mins pace but each time I attempted HR flew to the sky and the cramps came back. Great job hope to see you in IM Texas!
Ya it was a hot one. Threw a wrench in everyone's plans, I think. I won't be at IM Texas. I have a baby coming in December, but I'm going to start the program for a full here soon. Going to take a while to prepare with the adjusted 3 kid schedule.
9:23 the one in the yellow was me!
Congrats, all the way from the Netherlands! I'm going for a 70.3 next year, still a lot of training to do!
Woah! All the way from the Netherlands?! That's crazy. Thank you so much for watching. And good luck with the training. Trust the program, relax, and stick to the plan on race day. You'll crush it!
Congrats! A very tough race to have it as your first one. I was there, and the heat during the run was brutal, to say the least. Huge accomplishment man! Be proud :)
I have been riding this high all week. I did the Hotter'n Hell Hundred a few weeks before and that was 106 degrees. So I felt fortunate that I had that experience. I was prepared for the heat. Wasn't happy about it, but prepared. Thank you so much for watching!
Congratulations! I ran waco also. The run was brutal! I did my first two 70.3 races this year. Im going to run a full ironman in april 2025. I might die. You should definatly join in!
That's the plan. But I got baby number 3 on the way in December so I have to adjust the training schedule to fit the busy lifestyle. Might take a little longer to get prepared for a full. Gratz on your 70.3s!
This sounds like me!! Is the full you are doing Texas???
I did galveston and waco this year to gear up for IM texas!! If your in houston we should do some bricks together.
Yes the woodlands Texas. Outside of Houston. I grew up in Houston but live in Illinois now. I love going home.
Congrats!! They've definitely changed up the courses from a couple of years ago. Getting to experience that with your family is the celebration of all the hard work put in to get to the start line!
It was an incredible experience. Thanks so much for watching!
@djdoestriathlons btw, there is a bridge at White Rock lake that does that and I feel like I'm about to collapse on it..have to remember it's just the bridge 🙄
@@DavidC-rt3or I know the exact bridge you're talking about on the south side at the bottom of the big hill.
Good work DJ!! Congratulations, it's been fun to watch your journey! See ya soon.
Thanks brother!
Great job, congratulations. I did this event last year so I understand the work and commitment your sister put in to get what I call priceless footage. And to have your wife and children there to experience this with you, also priceless!!
Thank you! Yeah it was incredible having them there and seeing them along the course.
Baby Jacks face would keep me smiling and entire race too! Way to rock it! 💪🏼
It was the push I needed at a lot of points in the race.
Me and jenna had a great day following you on the tracker. Well done dude. Your family are great supporters. You wife and kids rock and your sister is a badass 👌 Great video and great racing.
Thanks Stu! It was such a fun experience. Excited to start prepping for a full, now.
The stadium run was brutal! I could not believe how much they stretched the distance over there.
That was the worst finishing stretch tease I've ever experienced.
Great job! I was also in that race and can echo pretty much everything you said! I had someone basically swerve and stop in front of me on the bike about 5 miles in and caused me to wreck but kept going! It’s a mental game for sure. The heat was nooooo joke on the run. Good job powering through and thanks for sharing your journey!!!
Thank you and thanks for checking out the video! Congratulations to you too. Glad you were able to recover from a spill. I saw a few that didn't.
hahaha all good Dale! Glad you're enjoying the content. Good luck on the race I'm sure you're going to crush it! Looking forward to seeing the video!
Good luck for race day. Ive got you on the tracker to follow 💪 Im with you on filming general training content, it does become boring. Always looking for new ideas. And i have to say i was firstly drawn to your channel for the way you film with the cinematic filming etc. Its beyond my skillset and knowledge but i love the look. Enjoy your content so keep it coming 👌
Thanks man. The nerves are definitely kicking in. Been having dreams of forgetting things for the race or arriving too late to start. But I'm excited.
When are we starting our Podcast?
Tomorrow
DM me if your down
Hi, do you use additional case to put the camera ubderwater? And what kind of pod are you using to put it in the pool so steadily?
I don't use an additional case. The DJI Action Cam is waterproof up to a certain depth. As for the tripod I'm using this: a.co/d/905tBxc
Congratulations I know it’s a little bit late lol but I did this race almost every year unfortunately I didn’t get to do it this year due to some issues. It truly is a ride of passage and yes, it is very miserable. Hope to see you next year! Lol.
As the days go on I appreciate the experience more and more. I find myself slipping further into madness of wanting to do it again. Thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video.
This video brought to you by the rocket on my bike, also known as Insta360
Wut?
Been meaning to catch up on this video for awhile now but great work Dale! That did not look easy but way to get it done! I can't even imagine dealing with the heat coming off that asphalt I would die lol
Thanks, Dan! Ya it was a tough one. Solid mmmmmmaybe on ever doing it again.
I was spectating that day, riding my own bike around to watch. At about 10:00 AM I thought, "This isn't so bad, it's still pretty nice, I should have signed up." By noon, I didn't even want to be out casually cruising around on my bike and went back to indoor AC. Good job pushing through and finishing!
Oh ya, I know exactly what you mean. That false confidence was built early, then the day just ate me alive.
Some friends and I will be there! Wishing you the best! Go crush it!
Awesome, thanks! Good luck to you too.
Congrats on finishing it. This year was absolutely brutal.
Thanks, man. I'll never forget it, that's for sure.
Best Hotter Than Hell video I’ve seen. Good camera work.
Awesome! Thanks so much for checking it out
You going to come do the Black Sheep ManRide Uncharted in October
I've got half ironman Waco on Oct. 6. When is that and what is it?
@@dogburn it’s in Clovis CA on the 6th
Very immature person. He isn’t very smart, tri bike on Texas roads for 100 miles? 😂 rookie
Good points. I can't argue. I am very immature and dumb. A potent combo. And I've only been doing triathlons for just over two years, so rookie is accurate as well. Thanks for the view and comment! Really helps the channel!
You’re a very rude person. I’m not sure what isn’t smart about packing up and riding 100 miles for your nephew that passed away before his 3rd birthday. Secondly it’s pretty smart that you didn’t know that because we aren’t boastful here. Genuinely laughing at the things that come out of people with little to no education on the WHY. I hope you step in dog shit today and get it on your hands when you clean it up.
U suck bro. Let em have fun.
Calm down, chico. I'm just being silly. But tell em to slow down in residential neighborhoods.
The video we all want. You doing water aerobics 😜
They offered, I should've
thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Kudos for knowing all the names of the characters
Not by choice
Water aerobics attendants were preparing you for the 70.3 swim start, lots of maneuvering as you pass everyone due to superior fitness, they were expecting a thank you 😂😂
I said the SAME THING to my buddy LOL! "It was like practicing for an actual triathlon with sighting and moving around people."
Ok, whiteboard illustration was great
I needed to tell the story.
I think you ran a stop sign.
That was a strategic cut. You didn't see anything.
Congratulations of pushing through that last 15 miles. Those miles are brutal; no energy and your butt screaming to end the pain! Thank you for the chuckles in reminiscing on the joy, pain, and determination to finish the HHH 100! Brings back many memories of the multiple HH100s I've done.
Thanks man! I'll never forget the experience that's for sure
Congrats on finishing! I called it at 90
NOOO!! Ten from the finish?! You going to try again?
@@dogburn yeah, I plan to keep trying until I finish the 100mi, then downgrade to the metric
dude! maybe work up to 60, then 75 miles, then 90, its all progression...
YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW THIS WAS A CRAZY CHOICE?!?!?!
Congratulations on completing the HHH century ride! Great video.
Thanks man! Thanks for watching!
A good friend got me riding again after hip replacements in 2020. Rode 100k in 2022 and 75 miles last year (at 71yo) when Hell’s Gate closed at 11am, 1-1/2 hours early due to conditions. 108F when my buddy and I finished. Brutal. We weren’t fast, but steady and persistent. Missed it this year; lost my friend to pancreatic cancer in late July. Plan to be back in 2025 to try to complete the HHH Century ride.
108 is nuts! Sorry to hear about your friend. Maybe I'll join you in '25... maybe.
Don't ruin your heart!
I'm trying! But I keep doing stupid things!
@@dogburn I bike at 5000 ft and hilly terrain just in my neighborhood and nearby paths . I had to do self care for a week because my BP got too low and now I may have developed cauda aquina 😥
@@HomeInBeing Holy moly. Do you incorporate strength training into your regiment?

Nice UTD cycling club bibs! I did a stint in cycling club back in 2016. Cool to see em out on the road. Congrats on your successful ride, even if it was a sufferfest at the end! Hoping to be at HHH next year myself. Maybe your memories will become rose tinted by then and I'll see you out there!
I have to admit, I was never in the cycling club at UTD... I bought them straight up off a custom bib site.
congrats man. i started riding this year and did the 25 mile.
NICE! Welcome to the biggest money suck of your life!
Big respect for still doing some training on a weekend away 👊
I couldn't pass up that beautiful river
I hate that missed this. Eill try to make it next year. I wasjt sble to defend my washers championship
