Making a stranded colourwork sock on a vintage sock knitter
As requested (finally). A video with no talking. Just the sound of knitting with a hint of ASMR.
This video is the process of making a knee high sock with stranded colourwork.
Yes, this video is long and I did my best to edit down to the bare minimum with still keeping the overall process intact. Feel free to skip around.
Enjoy!

    Oh, also, where did you get the slotted yarn carrier? I have an old AutoKnitter which I love but wish the yarn carrier was slotted. Thanks for these videos.

      Hi, I bought the slotted yarn carrier in 2017. The only information I have left is an invoice from Buttonville Fiber Studio. I don't know if this place even still exists. I tried a quick google search and cant seem to find anything.

      I actually don't know! it came with the machine and it was not listed in any of the manuals that came with. I have since removed it and put aside in case I ever figure out what it was for.

    I wonder if you knit the childrensocks with the same machine, same zylinder?

    • @EhKay3
      @EhKay3 8 місяців тому

      Hi! I have not knit children's socks on this machine but it is possible! A lady near me knits her kids socks by inserting a needle every other stitch position on the cylinder and adding a stretch yarn thread (nylon I think ) to the material. Apparently it all shrinks up into a kids size sock after she is done. I have not experimented with this but I have seen her socks and it's hard to believe that they were knit using such a large cylinder.

    I'm sure someone has commented this..but these beautiful machines were often advertised as ways homemakers could supplement their families income . I love the thought that there's always been a need for local goods & there were people willing to do it. I saw the old ads in Sears & Robuck, JC Penny catalogs ( reproduction prints. bound for documentation purposes). I loved those things..if you find them keep them.

    This is great. Really enjoyed. The reason for the Kitchener stitch, isn’t just for the ease of knitting endless amounts of socks, it is to prevent the appearance of the stitches going the wrong direction, as the Vs of the stockinette stitch are upside down, when you pick up the stitches from the toe and continue knitting the correct way, for the foot, with your method. The Kitchener stitch keeps the direction of the stitches the same from where the top of the toe and the foot portion connects. You will find with yours on that one row, the stitches will appear to change direction or be upside down in appearance on the toe, compared with the rest of the sock. Honestly though, it saves the hand sewing at the end with your method and still looks great! You would have to have a very trained eye to notice. Thanks for the video.

    • @EhKay3
      @EhKay3 9 місяців тому

      Hi! Thanks for the comment! The stitches on the toe will not run in different directions. This is because you pick up and hang the bottom loop of the row instead of the top loop. This creates a seamless transition. You had me wondering there for a second! I had to double check me socks. lol

    Just want to say, your method of making a sock is ingenious. I really struggled with Kitchener stitch on the toes and this method, though I can be tedious, is fantastic. I've made my first few genuinely wearable socks with this method. Thank you for this video. It's helped me learn my machine and understand its use more!
