Why You Should Grow Your Own Basil? (& really all Your Own Herbs)
Переглядів 2723 місяці тому
Consumer Reports put out a story on how most of the herbs you buy from the stores are contaminated with metals and others things you shouldn't be putting in your body. If you grow your own food then you know exactly what is and what isn't on the fruits, veggies, or herbs. It is not that hard to grow any of these as I am still learning and finding out.
The Perennial Onion: Egyptian Walking Onions

Because I use them in pots I don't let them 'walk' like they would in a raised bed so I harvest and reseed, but these onions will just forever drop and 'walk' to new locations if you let it
Discovering & Fighting Against Japanese Beetles

Until last week I had never seen a Japanese Beetle. Our rental didn't have any of them. We just moved about 15 minutes south east of that rental and this area has them annually that the neighbors put it on their calendar. Things I used against them: Soap water spray (Dawn) Beetle Traps Toulle

What you don't say is that Moringa is full of oxalates that are a major cause of kidney stones. Ask me how I know😯

I wanted to buy some for my Bible group to try growing. A few church goers and I have started a group where we garden and teach the bible to people. We have options for people to grow in our garden for those that do not have yards and we also have options for people to start seedlings and take home potted plants. I am saddened that the place linked will not ship to my address.

You can crack the outer layer of the seed, and eat the seed! Drink water after eating it, it’s sweet. It cured my uncle from high blood pressure and diabetes. He was able to get off big pharma pills. My family is big on eating the seeds.

Cholesterol is not dangerous! It is essential for health. It is part of every cell membrane. It's needed to make hormones and vitamin D, which is an immune modulating prohormone. Cholesterol is a healing agent. Cholesterol being dangerous is a myth.

Future plant idea that's native to the southeast U.S....Yaupon Holly. Grows best in Florida and on the Carolina coast, but can be in zone 7. It's a naturally-caffeinated tea with several potential health benefits.

Thanks for this. Oh, you surely can eat the bottoms! If you grow them spaced 8” apart and then dig up the whole plant in late summer when they start to go dormant you can have good sized onions!!! Then replant again in the fall at 8” and repeat the process.

An old Australian Army digger i knew, who only just recently died (pray for his soul please) told me that, when in the army (ww2) the diggers use to hang a pumpkin from tree in a pillow case (what we skips call pumpkin, you seppos call squash, i think). It would rot and then ferment. It would drip out and be filtered through the pillow case, so have a container to catch the pumpkin beer (cider/ wine, really) in. Serve cold in a tall glass!

Yes is an old tradition. What I would probably do now would be to half and seed it, bake it, then scoop out the pumpkin flesh and boil it... maybe with some molasses or malt syrup, even sugar. Then mash, strain and add yeast when it cools.... and use the leftovers for pumpkin pie or add to a soup.

Is there a video or book on what you can eat in Ireland and what healing herbs there are in the wild, and what you could grow easily that would come up every year by itself

    • @judsoncarroll5902
      @judsoncarroll5902 3 місяці тому

The Botanologia Hibernica or "Irish Herbal" by John Kehoe, published int he late 1800s is a classic. Maude Grieve also wrote quite a bit about Irish traditional herbalism in her English, A Modern Herbal from the 1930s.Or, ay of my books would be useful because I don't know of anything that grows in Ireland that doesn't grow here

@@skysounds101 There are also some great Permaculture books that are usually for the general area... Chelsea publishing, so it is British focused. But, applicable to Ireland. I have also heard that there is a very good Scottish herbal published recently. I'm sure the monks wrote a lot of valuable info on plants for Ireland before the Viking invasions. I wouldn't know how to find them though. Even John Parkinson's works, which were the best English herbals are hard to find because he was Catholic. John Gerard and Nicholas Culpepper were Protestant English herbalists int he 15-1600s and their work is good and easy to find, but inferior to Parkinson. One of the oldest Celtic herbals we have is Welsh, but it is very antiquated and difficult.

Lime leaves have a higher waxy protection on top. The dawn water is like a magnifying glass that focuses the sunlight to burn the leaves. Lime leaves have better resistance to the burning

Thank you for sharing your gardening. Your rosemary is growing just like mine, and I'm in NE England. Any chrysanthemum or glowers like painted daisy's, marigold... that help deter pests because they have natural pyrethrins in them. Ladybugs are great for controlling aphids on plants. I don't know what part of California you are in, but when i was in Antelope Valley, where I stayed, I had just enough room for a cement mixing tray of cat grass and a grow bag for a few tomatoes. Over here in England, the biggest leaf eater I have found are lilly beetles. They are a beautiful bright red and make little noises, so I have collected them and let them live out their little beetle lives in a natural vivarium habitat 15x15x15 glass with mesh top. I can feed them extra silly leaves to keep them happy. For me gardening feels like I am closer to God. I work with my hands, and sit for hours as I go around the garden pruning, cutting, pinching out, and regrowing cutting to make new plants like rose bush hybrids. My favourite if you ever see one is called scent from heaven. It's a climbing floribunda rose that has a very beautiful sweet rose smell. The other is twice in a blue moon which is also a climber that has large beautiful lavenders color blooms and a strong smell that is also unique. I look forward to the next video.
