The Privacy Dilemma in Wearable Tech Research
This lecture explores the expanding role of wearable devices in health research and the ethical, privacy, and regulatory challenges they present. With advancements in sensor technology, data analytics, and connectivity, wearables like smartwatches and fitness trackers now offer real-time health diagnostics, early disease detection, and personalized health recommendations. These capabilities provide new opportunities for public health monitoring and remote healthcare management but also raise concerns about data privacy, misuse, and corporate control over sensitive information.
We discuss the complexities of using consumer-grade wearables in research, including the impact of opaque algorithms and varying global data protection regulations such as the GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA. The lecture provides insights into how researchers and healthcare professionals can navigate these challenges, maintain ethical standards, and leverage wearables to improve health outcomes while protecting individual privacy.
Ideal for researchers, healthcare professionals, and those interested in the ethical implications of wearable technology in health research.

Polysomnography vs Wearable Technology: The Evolution and Future of Sleep Tracking
Переглядів 188Місяць тому
This lecture explores the evolution of sleep tracking, starting with Eugene Aserinsky's 1950s discovery of REM sleep and the development of polysomnography (PSG) as the gold standard for sleep analysis. We examine PSG's methodology, which measures various physiological signals to understand sleep architecture. We then shift to modern consumer wearables like Fitbits and Apple Watches, discussing...

Very good presentation. However, you did not mention the huge increase in free radical production, especially when practicing the popular, extreme, endurance sports. That might be a factor to also include. As a long time committed exerciser for over 50 years, I find that overexercising just like overeating, oversleeping, overstressing, puts the body/mind in a very unbalanced and unhealthy state. Great channel thanks...

I hurt my right shoulder ~12 years ago doing pushups. The persistent pain that I experienced caused pain every time I raised my right arm. I purchased with much trepidation and doubt the following "DUAL SPECTRUM TECH: Red light is recognized as a healthy and safe therapy, 660 nm red light (visible light) acts on the epidermis to improve skin appearance, accelerate healing after sports injuries.850 nm near infrared light (invisible light) penetrates deep into tissue cells to help relieve pain and increase blood circulation, reduce inflammation and joint pain, relieve muscle tension, promote cell regeneration." 15-30 minutes every day for three weeks, so far I have seen improvement. Two examples; closing the blinds in the kitchen / reaching behind my car seat to put a dink in the cup holder behind be. Both cause severe pain. After about a week I went to shut the blind in the kitchen, gritting my teeth as usual waiting for the pain- none came. That encouraged me. I Injured my left bicep where the lower tendon attaches to the forearm bone while I was doing weighted curls. The was 22 years ago. It has been a constant pain, now is healing? Heck I dont know, but the pain level has dropped from loud unbearable to background noise . I will give this another week , then begin a careful regimen of stretching and light workouts to to stimulate and strengthen. ( I may keep using the infrared frequency as it is soothing. ) then 3 weeks later will do another round. - Look I watched the video here and was like, wth? but its working for me... maybe its as simple as the combination of long wave and short wave that simulates blood flow. I don't know, I was just about to get my shoulder cut on and wanted to try this first , so far so good.... I won't give you the link because Iam not trying to sell anything just wanted to pass along info. If you want to try it , you''ll find plenty of examples on Amazon. I paid less that $60 for mine.

Great explanation. Just want to mention that the stock video of the runner at the end is an evolutionary “inaccurate” way humans have been running. If you look at the way barefooted people run, they run w their forefoot. The heel strike is a modern phenomenon created by running shoes and is considered at higher risk of causing injuries!

Firstly the whole running down prey to exhaustion is a myth. Studies show the average speed of these hunters is like 6kph, which is walking pace. Secondly if you know anything about marathons people literally have to replenish throughout the race or else they'll collapse of either dehydration or lack of electrolytes. Thirdly there is no study that actually compares the best runners on earth in a scientific test that deems humans as best. It's all hearsay. The truth is when humans hunted these animals it was essentially walking and tracking and even then the animal was likely injured already because realistically a healthy deer is running a mile or more in a sprint and can easily catch it's breath by the time the human has walked up to it and then the cycle would continue. And even then since when is that a good bases to class humans as the best runners. Because if a human was so sprint over and over like the deer is they'd be dropping from exhaustion too 🤣🤣🤣 So a better way to look at it is the best endurance animals running at the same speed as a human jogging. In that case the human would simply lose 10/10 because a wolf doing 6-12 mph is like asking a fish to breath in water😹😹😹 So the notion that humans are the best runners because they can walk and catch up to an animal that has sprinted all out multiple times might be one of the dumbest myths I've seen circulating the Internet.
