Mudroom Makeover - Upcycling Old Cabinets
In this video I give my mudroom a makeover! The project consisted of serval parts including: installing under stair drawers/cabinets to utilize the space better, making a simple coat rack to replace some 3M hooks that I had been using, and building a frame to dress us a wedding gift my wife and I received, and lots of painting. There's more to come in this space so hopefully you find this helpful!

In this video I cover all the stone wall building I did this summer! I pick up after a previous video where I prepped the base by installing a French drain and running water and power behind the stone wall. The stone wall and mortar work I completed between June and August, finishing the drainage behind the stone wall, back filling with loam, mulching and landscaping took place in end of August...

Both Dewalt Portable Workbench vs TOUGHBUILT that hold 1000 lbs. will wobble if you push from the side, but won't collapse, just like the 125. Home Depot is selling the WM225-A an updated version of the original WM225 model. The WM225-A features an improved clamping system that provides better grip and ease of use when securing materials in place. The WM225-A has reinforced construction elements that increase the workbench's lifespan and stability. Amazon is selling the same workbench for $68.28 and every day the price changes???
Prices definitely have changed since I originally made the video, nice find on the Home Depot sale, I always try and check a few places to find the sale too!
@@james.clinton keep up the good work!
I am so glad I've seen your video, I share many similarities. I have a property in Montenegro, the terrain is very inclined, the arrangement requires a lot of cascading retaining walls. Since the soil is practically 70 percent stone mixed with red soil, I started separating the two, and utilizing the stone for all sorts of builds. Retaining walls, garden zoning, raised bush beds, etc. I also use bagged mortar, listen to podcasts and whack the stones. 3 years ago I wanted to see if I could do it myself, just to save money. Now I've found my hobby plus I get to really transform my plot into an arranged garden. Can't wait for the spring to come.
It really does feel rewarding to build things with my hands! It's nice to hear that other people also enjoying working with stones, I'm going to have to think about what to do next, I'd love a better garden and if I could tie it into the landscaping of the yard that would be a great idea, thanks for the ideas! and thanks for watching!
I just got a 200 at an estate sale for 10 bucks. Actually good condition.
Nice find!
Any idea on finding cheap stone southern NH towards the seacoast? Checked out a place in Littleton ma and the fieldstone is pretty expensive.
I saw some listings on Facebook marketplace place recently by Armstrong Stoneworks listing a bunch of stuff by the ton, their service area looked pretty big, it might cover your area. Definitely some better bargains from some private sellers too moving smaller amounts looking and for people to come collect it. I usually like to get 2 or 3 prices when I buy material, it definitely seems worth the couple extra calls to make sure it’s a good price!
Did some stone work 16 years ago. Good job, but i got into a better career. If you got the time and back it's great diy for your property.
It’s definitely more of a hobby, after weekend I need the work week to recover! Hats off to anyone who does it full time, it’s hard work!
Masonry is the cheapest thing to DIY but the most expensive thing to hire out. As a second generation stone mason, this makes me happy 😂
I hadn’t heard that before but I believe it!
Short and straight to the point, love it. Thanks for the heads up!
I try to keep things straight to the point! Thanks for watching!
Very nice, man that was a lot of work!
Thanks, I definitely had fun doing it and it’s still outside spinning in the wind!
Beautiful! I am very impressed. I wish I was younger and I could do this again myself.
Thank you! I’m definitely glad I’m tackling this one while I’m young, I’m sure I could do it when I’m older but it might just go a lot slower!
I had one from a couple decades ago that had the same shape as the cheaper 125 but the strength of the 225. I had the 225 for a year and never liked the extra step in front. Now I have the 125 and will just have to be careful with it.
For as wobbly as it is the 125 I have has really held up, I still use it all the time! It probably helps that it was just inexpensive enough when I got it I don’t mind using it for just about anything!
@@james.clinton I just finished putting together one from Walmart for $22! Now I see it's back up to 70. Glad to hear it's holding up. Wondering if a cross brace could stabilize it...
I think someone else commented they added a brace and it helped, I'm torn because I like how light it is, if you come up with anything good I'd love to hear about it!
@@james.clinton I'd probably bolt a 1/2" x 1/2" aluminum angle piece on as a diagonal (of course). I think the weight would be negligible. Definitely not a 2x4!
I just purchased one and have not used it yet, but concerned that it doesn't have wear pads on the bottom. Does yours take a lot of abuse on the bottom from wear of the plastic?
I've had mine 3 years and it doesn't have any significant wearing, just some minor surface scratches on the bottom. That's with using it on mainly my deck and brick walk and patio.
I think that something like this would be great for large decks and walkways. I have a Toro trimmer powerhead and it works excellent. I use it for trimming in the summer and I attach my Ryobi Expand It blower head in the winter for blowing off light snow from my driveway and backyard. Many years ago I had a Toro corded snow shovel similar to this and it was great for clearing my deck and walkway. The snow here is light ahd dry, and the snow shovel was able to through the show quite a long distance and right over the top of my fence, which was nice. I would definitely consider one of these snow shovel attachments if I could adjust the angle.
I have found it does work pretty great on decks, or anywhere that’s not really practical for a snowblower. I with you on not being able to change the angle, I’m hoping to get the dewalt battery powered snow shovel this year, it can throw to the side. It’s new so I won’t know how well it throws, but given it’ll be a lot lighter im thinking it’s worth trying!
Saw the baby in the background in a previous video, but didnt want to presume anything, congrats ! And enjoy the time :) Nice work on the nursery :)
Thanks! He’s been an absolute joy! I definitely had fun doing this for him!
@@james.clinton Thats fantastic :) Soon he will walk behind you helping out building great walls of Clinton :)
Just spray on some Christmas tree flock after taping off the frame. Or you can just wipe off the flock with a wet towel without taping anything off.
Now here's one I wish I remembered! Comments full of good suggestions today!
I hate when my friends have this shi on their house, can't see them mfers when they're coming
Probably just what they intended!
Use wax or a bar of soap😊
This seems to be the popular simpler solution!
Just swab with a foam brush and regular Elmer's Glue. Cheap, effective, easy to wash off.
I never heard of that one, great tip!
Who's coming to your door peeping in your house? I'd be putting up cameras
Those windows gave a surprising good view to anyone coming up the front walk, mostly the delivery guy. But yes cameras everywhere, just in case!
Use reflective one way security film. You can see out, outside people can only see themselves.
I’ll have to check that out, does it work well at night when the house has the lights on but it’s dark outside? For some reason I thought it only worked in certain lighting conditions.
@james.clinton A porch light should be sufficient to deal with a lighting imbalance. There are also electro films you can apply that can be solid/tinted and clear when a charge is applied if you're handy enough to install it.
I didn’t think of the porch light, I might give that a try in the future. Fortunately this stuff is easy to put up and take down.
Nor you peeping out
That’s true! Fortunately we have windows with blinds next to it so we can choose privacy or not there
I have to say the idea of a wet and forget is ideal but there is always a need for mechanical cleaning. I attacked a older house with a big problem with deck, siding, windows, stone walkway and I started pressure washing but it took forever to clean. Looked great but you could see some build-up spots where pressure washer could not be used and a brush was. I went to a Local hardware store and the worker there warned me of the products that were fast and powerful but the risks involved. Showed me wet and forget. Hint he gave me was use Wet and Forget and then 4 weeks later hit it with pressure washer if needed. What I learned was the moss, and mold and others die after exposure then coming back with a garden hose knocked them free. I could see the difference. I have only come back to reapply early spring every other year. I did 5 other houses on the street, just wet and forget come back 4 weeks later with a garden hose. Bleach and Dawn was great but had discoloring issues. Lots of siding and trim start chalking and paint starting to become thin. Wet and Forget does not do that.
You’ve got a good point that in some cases it really doesn’t take the case of a pressure washer, I still use mind regularly, but I’ve been pretty surprised though that the pace moss or mildew has regrown on the areas I treated last year has seemed a lot slower. It’s just one more tool in the box, thanks for watching!!
Very sleek!
Thanks I was pretty happy with the result!
Or car tint
Cart tint also works great for keeping the house cool on hot months!
That’s a great idea too!
them slugs getting high xD
The beer really does a number on them!
Amazing outcome! May I ask the mortar type you used?
I used sakrete type s mortar mix for the whole project, its supposed to be good for walls, stone or brick, about and below grade.
@@james.clinton Thank you, James. I love the work you’ve done on your property.
Would you please do a video on the cost for the stone and mortar?
Sure! A quick answer so you don’t have to wait is…. The stone is bit atypical for anyone else doing a project like this, there was some new construction going on about 1/4” of a mile from my house and I asked what was happening with the material they screen off the lot when they cleared the trees. I ended up purchasing about 120 yards of the tailings, it was rocks, roots and a little loam mixed in. I made a rock screener to separate the stone and then hand washed them all. I’ve done my fireplace project and about 255 feet of stone wall so far (and have more stone) all for under $800 for the stones. It was a bargain because the guy trucking it out didn’t have to take it far. The mortar I’ve been buying bags, I’ll search for my receipts and do a tally for the video. Thanks for watching!
@@james.clinton I really appreciate this. I’d like to build a stone wall on my property. I was trying to put together a budget. Your answer helps!
I'd love to do this, it looks great! Burying landscape plastic is pretty cringe, tho.
Its landscape fabric not plastic, it keeps the fines from the loam from washing into 3/4” drainage material and plugging it up.
I bet your back felt amazing the next day
I'm always a little sore the next day, but I spread the whole project out over the summer which probably saved my back!
Very, very, very beautiful! Just WoW!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
very very nice ! Its becoming one heck of a driveway. Good job :)
It’s getting there slowly! Thanks for watching!
Where did you get those metal posts from? Also are the power controls weather proof? I assume since you have them posted you haven’t had any issues
They were salvaged from a warehouse, the metal posts used to be part of an old metal cage. I just cleaned them up, cut them to length and painted them. The control is weather proof but the outlet isn’t so I put them in a weather proof box. No issues since I posted the video, I’ve been so happy with them I just recently bought a couple of sets of the ground lights to complement the hanging ones! Thanks for watching!

Dude! Those acorns don't have any caps on them. You made them look perfect for this video you made? Deceptive?
There’s a couple of caps, but not many, best guess is my mower will suck up the caps and not the acorns. I’ve definitely got enough falling on their own without me putting them back on the ground!
"The nut roller is my favorite tool" Perfect information to share on a first date.
Ha! "Are we still doing phrasing?" (if you are an Archer fan)
I have tried it I had to spray a few days in a row but eventually it came clean
Good to know, I waited and let the rain do the work, but maybe some spots are more stubborn than others! Thanks for watching!
Where are you putting the bushings and are they useful?
I put the bushings in the hubs of the wings, in hindsight it would have been so much easier to buy a short piece of brass tube than make them, but they work great I leave it out all year long and it’s still spinning great today!
Really appreciate this video, I didn't know the ryobi attachment could work with other manufacturers.
It’s always nice when a universal standard exists! Thanks for watching!
Still working well? Any bulbs burn out?
Still going strong! No bulbs burnt out, I use them every night from a half hour after sunset to 11pm. So the use varies, but maybe 3 or 4 hours a day for a year and no issues.
@@james.clinton Wow thats great, thanks!
I was on the fence about these. I have a bunch of Govee products and had great success with them. I couldn’t find anything on their site or Amazon to show the light sequence. Thank you for filming it.
No problem! I couldn’t find good examples either, glad it could help!
Have they withstand rain, wing, etc well so far? I plan to put mine in my front tree for holiday lighting. Like RGB fruit 😂
I’ve had them outside for about a year, so far no visible UV damage or anything from the wind and rain. I do have them being supported by a wire, I would definitely recommend that. They held up much better than the Christmas lights I used to use. I hope you like them if you get them, it is fun to change the colors!
@@james.clinton thank you so much for the feedback!!
Great job James, something tells me this isn't your first stone wall. I see that you haven't poured a reinforced footing. Are you concerned about frost?
Definitely not my first! Most of the walls I built on the property are on ledge, so effectively a lot bigger and deeper than any concrete footing would be. The wall in this video is about ~130 feet long, and about 115 feet of it is right on ledge. In the few areas that I have built walls not on ledge I’ve just been using plenty of drainage, mostly French drains to carry it well away, and I try to make the base of the wall thicker than it is tall. I’ve got one that I used this strategy from 4 years ago and there no sign of movement, but time will tell!! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Thinking of getting these for my backyard this year! Just for the String Outdoor Pro lights fornthe frontyard!!
I’ve been pretty happy with them! I actually just ordered some ground lights this week since these are still holding really well! Thanks for watching!
You doing that builds for bill
I did this at my house! Thanks for watching!
Try sprinkling rolled oats around the base of your plants slugs are greedy it is their downfall
I’ll have to try it out, anything to keep the flowers looking good!
Also works for rollie pollies. 😉
Good to know! I’ll have to check my traps to see if it caught any!
Well I learned something new thanks for the knowledge I don't have slug problems yet but maybe in the future
I never had them until this year and a gardener friend gave me the tip!
I inherited a Workmate a year ago, and never knew it folded up. I've hardly used it because it was bulky to move outside, so, I just piled a bunch of crap on top of it. I just checked and it's a 225, and it folds! I immediately built a top with a cleat just like yours, and folded it up in the corner. I will be using it now instead of my saw horses with a piece of plywood clamped on top. THANKS!
I’m glad it was helpful! I love a good mobile work surface, especially if it’s easy to move! Thanks for watching!
Getting close to 100$ for that sign ? No thanks bro.
That's alright, thanks for watching anyway!
No 4th of july?
Not in their pre-programmed options, but I usually just do a red, white, and blue custom pattern, fortunately it's relatively easy to do, thanks for watching!
Raccoons are little nuts! And also very clumsy.
And very persistent, it was about 5 nights of finding the feeder on the ground before I caught him on camera! Your Starbuck's video was fantastic btw!
@@james.clinton I love raccoons but they ruin all the gardens and get into the trash. What’s the next step? Are you going to find a way to feed him now? And thank you! 😊
