    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas День тому

      I’ve had no problems with it! I also suggest going into the AF speed setting and pulling it down a little to give it a more natural focus pull. I have it set at -1 or -2 most of the time. If I’m shooting action though, like mountain biking, I’ll bump it up to 4 right away so that it catches the biker mid air. Long story short, it’s excellent in my opinion, but it is always able to be improved by dialing in focus settings.

    Sony and canon now Panasonic have better autofocus cameras in 2024

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 6 днів тому

      Than Nikon? I’ve used Sony and canon and can say comfortably that Nikon stacks up well at this point. The Z8 gives me better results than the canon did for sure. From the people that I know who shoot Panasonic, their main gripe with those cameras is their autofocus, and most would agree they are quite a bit behind. I will say though that all four brands are good enough to capture anything you want to capture. Amazing autofocus is a nice feature for sure, but it’s not essential for good photography by any means

    • @merakiphotos4603
      @merakiphotos4603 5 днів тому

      Panasonic? They are behind all of them. They are known for video. Their image quality and lenses also lack. Nikon, canon, and Sony are pretty much the same spectrum in most use cases. Nikon z8 is amazing. Also has better image quality than the r52 even when it uses a mechanical shutter. Also while being a year newer;). but then again the r52 is just a firmware updated r5

    I have zf and now i would prefer to have something with more comfort for bigger lenses. Question is z6iii (not sure if i need speed) or z8 or maybe even older z6ii/z7ii. But the fact i like new af on new nikons not sure if i can go to z6/7ii

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 8 днів тому

      Hey all kinds of great thoughts here! If I were you, I’d probably buy a grip for the ZF and call it good. That camera is really exceptional and you won’t find an upgrade in the Z6iii most likely. The Z6ii and Z7ii would both probably feel like a step back for you. It’s nice having a solid grip, but I’ve used the small rig grip for the ZF and loved the feel of the setup.

      @@SamBugas that was fast :) thank you for getting back to me :) … ya probably you are right about getting a grip on my zf. • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 8 днів тому

      @@_krakra_Z6iii looks amazing, just not probably worth moving on from the excellent ZF. The Z6iii dynamic range thing was overblown. I’ve seen a few channels (Gerald undone being the best) explaining how the DR is totally fine and the hit on it is a misunderstanding about how the camera really works.

      Can’t blame you for that choice! Just depends on what you’re using the camera for. For me, the slightly slower pace of those cameras (even though they’re much faster now than they used to be) isn’t quite enough for some of my work. To be honest, the GFX would be one of my top choices if money were no concern haha

      @SamBugas 11 днів тому

      Thanks for the support Scott! I have to be honest, I’ve dug into color grading a bit but haven’t really invested in implementing a good process yet. I use resolve and basically edit each clip with a four node structure: base color adjustments -> base exposure adjustments -> log conversion. That’s basically it right now. It’s just me being lazy. A more complex node tree I’ve set up that I’d like to perfect better includes 12 nodes that basically walk you through editing your frame much like a photo, from color balance to clarity, noise to offset, etc… I’ll make a video on it some day haha

    Dont you miss the Fuji colours when you use the Nikon?

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 13 днів тому

      Great question! The answer is both yes and no. I really enjoy the Fuji colors, especially in story driven moments, but Nikon has excellent colors as well. I’ve bounced around most major brands, and I feel that Nikon and Fuji are at the top (not counting leica). This is why the Fuji complements my Nikon well. Put simply, the Fuji colors are absolutely nice to have, but the Nikon is so exceptional in its own ways that I don’t feel like I’m missing anything when I use it.

    Great review / summary of the Z8, it's magical. By far the most advanced tool I own / have ever owned. Hey how do you like that Tamron 150-500? I see Tamron just announced the 50-400 4.5-6.3 for Z mount, early previews show some really impressive results for such a range (Matt Irwin and Adrian Alford have vids up today).

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 13 днів тому

      Hey Craig! I appreciate the support! I have two points around the 150-500. First, it’s just a bit bigger than I would have liked, and that means it comes with me on my bigger outings far less often. Second, I’ve had a hard time getting sharp shots since buying it. I have to admit that I have it a bit of a knock a while back, and unfortunately its focus system seems to be somewhat broken. Shots are all nearly sharp but just slightly off, and have been that way for months. Regardless of the damage I’ve caused it, I would by the 50-400 if I could do it over today. That lens looks exceptional! I thought I’d get the 150-500 to be a landscape/wildlife hybrid but in truth I’d rather have a smaller super zoom and something like the 400 PF or 600 PF (even if on rental for wildlife opportunities). Hope this provides some value haha.

      @@csc-photo The 180-600 loos immaculate and I think that's a great choice. I'd love to use the 35-150 as well. That would be the absolutely perfect one and done solution. Hey Luis thanks for chiming in! Can’t tell you how happy I’d be for a tiny full frame Nikon like that (and not the ZF because it’s not as tiny as people think haha). Hey everyone, thanks for watching! I want to make a quick comment on the nature of this video as you watch it. This was not meant to be a full, analytical review. You'll notice that I don't point out many negatives about this camera, and that's because 1) There aren't many 2) This was meant to be an impression focused video. A few genuine critiques (all of which I'll cover in future video(s) focused on the negatives) include: 1) The focus stacking feature is sub par compared to Canon, forcing you to dive into a menu for each focus stack without being able to see your frame. 2) The autofocus has a learning curve. It's every bit as good as the other top systems right now, and at times better, but it takes some practice. 3) I very occasionally have managed to change the shooting profile in the settings without knowing it, effectively changing all of my settings suddenly. Easily fixed in the menu, but when it happens, it can be really frustrating. 4) The button on the front bottom left to change focus modes is useless for me. I'd love to be able to change it to anything else. If you have any thoughts on the Z8, pop them in below! I'd love to chat :)

    • @csc-photo
      @csc-photo 13 днів тому

      Re: Left side focus mode button - agreed, it needs more customization choices. I think I've figured out that it's designed to be "squeezed" to activate with the lower-left corner of your left palm. That aside - I have it set to the normal AF Area / Release Mode setting, because I changed my Fn2 button to Cycle AF Mode (so handy!).

    Love your photography and the video! You only addressed it in passing, but it doesn't seem that crop sensor vs ff played any role in how you look at the XT5. I am currently in the market for a new camera and am torn between the Sony a7iv and the XT5. I rented the XT5 for a trip to Kauai and was not impressed. It died on me once during a boat trip, and the AF was not great for people (when they move). But I used older lenses that also didn't resolve well. I am willing to reconsider the XT5 just because the ergonomics and the overall package are great.

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 15 днів тому

      Hey Ralph! Thanks for the support 🤙🏻 In many ways the crop doesn’t matter to me at all. I do have my Nikon Z8 (I’ll be releasing a review this week) that covers my more high stress moments, but in truth I’d be perfectly fine using the XT5 95% of the time. I’m surprised it died on you as I’ve found the battery is the best I’ve used on any camera. I always have a few though. To be honest, the Sony is a better camera in almost every way. I’ve used Sony and really disliked the cameras. I found them lifeless, and I put a ton of value in the way a camera feels in my hand. Some people might disagree, but for me it really matters. The Fuji feels so good to use that I end up using it a lot, and the files are as good as most cameras on the market. Autofocus is never going to stack up against Sony, and with moving people it can be finicky. You can usually dial it in a little in the settings, and with a quick focusing lens like the newer glass, everything seems to be more reliable and zippy. The old glass is truly old for Fuji haha. All said, I’d go with the camera you feel more excited about picking up. These are both some of the nicest cameras on the market.

    • @raveG244
      @raveG244 15 днів тому

      @@SamBugas Thanks so much for the thoughtful and helpful reply. I should say that the battery wasn't the issue when the XT5 blacked out. I was continuously taking photos, and all of a sudden the camera died. I had to take out the battery, wait, and then could wake it up again.That one incident doesn't affect my decision since I am coming back to it. And I come back because I just love how the Fuji handles. My XT20 (sold today) was meant as a travel camera because I did not want to haul all my Nikon FF gear with me anymore, and even that small camera produced publishable images (actually, one photo was licensed for a book cover). I used more often than my other camera but then found its limitations (mainly AF, EVF taking ages to come on) a bit frustrating. The thing is that the XT5's AF is just fine in 90% of all scenarios, but the 10% of missed shots just bugs me. As always, there will be trade-offs. And in the end, you are right, these are both great cameras. Since I still have some Fuji lenses, I might stay with Fuji.

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 8 днів тому

      @@raveG244that AF will always be a reason I prefer having a second camera that can handle the tougher moments. I also find I can push my low light ideas further with FF. It’s never an easy call, and to have either camera is a crazy cool opportunity; like you said, they’re both great!

    I hate myself 😞 I should have purchased an extended warranty on my brand new X-T5 camera. Long story short... After ownership of the X-T5 for one year and nine months the camera is in need of repair because of mediocre average built quality. I sent the camera into an official Fuji repair tech who told me (3-weeks later) it will cost $210.00 (US) dollars to replace the sticky on/off power switch. Yes, $210.00 dollars to replace a manufacturer faulty switch on a LESS THAN 2-year old camera 😡 Before anyone attack me I'd like to say that the camera was very well taken care of. i.e., It was never stumped on by a pack of domesticated Indian elephants. It was never used up in the wintry Swiss alps. It was never used as a weapon while walking through unsavory neighborhoods in Los Angeles. It was absolutely never taken into the bath tub with me! In fact, I took better care of my camera (Fujifilm X-T5) more so than of myself. My advice to all interested purchasers of any Fuji camera product, BY EXTENDED WARRANTIES! on the 400mm lens, the X-T20 and the X-T5. Important: do REGISTER your new toys so you'll get direct email notices on all new firmware updates.

      Great Advice and some crazy scenarios that you "didn't" partake in lol. I've personally treated mine like a rough tool, taking it on climbs, treks, rainy day wanders and a whole lot more. So far it's build quality has been every bit as good as I would ask for. I've heard others that don't feel it is as high quality as it should be, but I suppose time will tell. My X-T2 was a weapon when I had it, I hope the X-T5 lasts as well as it's older brother did. Thanks for chatting!

      Hey, great question! I have it set so that one card records pictures and the other records videos, and if one fills it will start to do both on the other. Hey Sam! I am very interested in your thoughts on the XT5 vs the ZF for a trekking camera (self-supported, solo, backcountry, ultralight/lightweight, no porters).

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas 28 днів тому

      Hey! What a great question. I’ve only used the ZF shortly, but I know enough to make a few assumptions. If you are pushing the cameras autofocus, the Nikon is always going to win, but in your case, that doesn’t seem to be a concern. It then boils down to image quality, lenses, fun factor, etc… given you’re asking about trekking, the Fuji would be the lighter kit, so that matters a fair deal. The images out of both are top tier. I would say the Nikon will be a fair bit better for low light, and generally will give a technically better photograph due to the advantages that full frame has (and the beautiful sensor they put in the ZF). However, the Fuji, while perhaps less technically perfect, spits out some of the best looking files and photos I’ve ever seen. In other words, you can’t go wrong with either. Personally I don’t love how the ZF feels in my hand, and I do love the XT5, but this is rather personal, and my experience shouldn’t guide your assumption about feel in hand. The ZF will be a bit tougher, but that also adds to the weight. If you are doing much video work, the ZF will be substantially better as well. As for lenses, I absolutely love Fuji and Nikon lenses (which is why I am in both systems). You can’t go wrong, but Fuji lenses will be lighter, and cheaper, so if you break them while trekking it won’t hurt as much haha. I won’t tell you one is a better choice than the other because there’s too much subjective information to consider. The Nikon ZF is the better camera, but there’s a reason I bought the XT5 rather than the ZF, I’ll leave it at that haha.

    Enjoyed it and agree. I recently upgraded to an xt5 from a 20-year old nikon (obviously not a pro) and am very happy. The "haters" are absolutely right that the af-c tracking is insanely slow compared to the big boys... it's not "wrong", it's just that even set to focus priority any continuous shutter drastically outruns the focus tracking. I'd imagine it's really bad for video, though i don't plan on ever using video mode. In basically every other way, to me, it's up there with how the fanboys talk about Leica, in many of the same ways. Basically, if I shot sports, I'd probably go buy a canon. For everything I actually do, I jist love it.

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas Місяць тому

      Super accurate. I will say that I use the Fuji for almost all my video and it works fine. I mostly do still frame video shots and slow pans, so it’s not being pushed, but it does just fine for that stuff. The autofocus also works fine for street and people moving, just not moving fast haha. It’s the perfect camera for many many people

    • @587583922
      @587583922 Місяць тому

      @@SamBugas I can see that. Like I said, AF-C on Fuji isn't wrong, it's just slow. Everything else about the shooting experience is incredible, at least for my preferences. I think it's one of the funny big-picture things about photography that the more you "need" some advanced tool/aid, the less well it works. I'm fine zone-/pre- focusing people, pets, and some degree of sports/action. But, at some point even with crazy high ISO, you have to open the aperture enough that your hit rate plummets. That's when AF-C and subject detection would really help. But, that's also when the camera can't see enough to really get it right. I'm lucky in that there are a couple good rental shops near me. If I need to shoot sports/action outside of incredible light, I'll just rent something. It's expensive, but it's not nearly as expensive as actually buying gear I don't like as much just for something I rarely care to do.

    Thanks For Watching (and apologies for the filthy Fuji... I don't do much camera cleaning) A couple of menu items I didn't mention but deserve some attention: 1) I set my tracking mode to option 1 for general purpose 99% of the time, only occasionally using option 2. 2) In the buttons menu, I make sure to turn off AF-S and AF-C on the shutter button. I only want the AF On button to activate autofocus (back button autofocusing). 3) I set the dynamic range to 200% such that I get a bit of a dynamic range boost when I shoot higher ISO. It's a subtle difference but worth experimenting with. let me know if you have any questions!

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas Місяць тому

      @@2and20 Fun spot to be as both cameras are incredible. If I were you, I would decide which lenses you prefer. I love both Nikon and Fuji lenses, and each have their merits. Full transparency, the Nikon ZF is the better camera between the two in almost every way, but that shouldn't be why you choose it. If you are shooting with a high need for autofocus (sports, events, etc...) the Nikon will be far superior. However, I like the feeling and act of using the Fuji much more. Both will produce beautiful files. As for why the X-T5 files were some of my favorites, I believe it has to do with two things. First, I was shooting with the 16-80mm lens which is excellent for story telling and has a beautiful look to it. Second, the fuji files are less digital than the Nikon, and for storytelling moments, the fuji has a very authentic look that I am drawn to. You can create that effect with the files from the Nikon, but because I took so many with the Fuji, I came away with more from that camera. The Z8 is a far better camera, and ZF likely is as well, but Fuji lenses are some of my favorite, and quite frankly, you cant go wrong with either camera. It entirely depends on what your shooting needs are.

    • @2and20
      @2and20 Місяць тому

      @@SamBugas this is helpful. When you say the fuji files are "less digital", do you mean they are "film like"? How hard would it be for you to get your z8 files to look like the fuji files do you think? I have done a bit of editing on some of my nikon files and can never get it quite right

    • @SamBugas
      @SamBugas Місяць тому

      @2and20 I suppose film like is somewhat accurate. Fuji files are certainly not akin to film, but closer than most modern cameras. I don’t really try to replicate the Fuji look on my Nikon, so I can’t speak much to that. I can say, though, that I have no problem getting photos to match between both cameras when I need a cohesive set of photos (commercial work).

    I own both the Nikon Z8 and the X-T5, and I agree with you. I was also amazed with the Fuji X-T5 40 megapixel images. I used my Tamron 17-70mm 2.8 lens with the X-T5, but it didn't quite resolve the 40 megapixel images. I sold this lens and purchased Fuji's new 16-50mm 2.8-4.8 "kit" lens and I immediately noticed the improved sharpness, color, and contrast. The X-T5 requires Fuji's best lenses. I also prefer Fuji's jpegs to the Nikon's. I shoot both jpegs and Raw with my Nikons, but for most of my Fuji photos, the jpegs get the job done.

      Super interesting experience with the lenses! I only have the 16-80mm f4 which I doubt resolves the 40mp very well, but to my eye, it’s plenty good enough. My plan with the Fuji, given that I also shoot with the Nikon, is to pretty much exclusively shoot with primes when I can afford them, and have the 16-80 be my “do everything” lens. I never end up using jpegs from either camera, but that’s only because of how I prefer my finished edits. The Fuji jpegs are stunning to say the least

    Nice video. Congratulations. I’m a xpro3 owner and I’m thinking about the xt5. I do know why I like Fujifilm but when I do see people creating great work as you, I would like to know a bit more about how those images were taken aside saying that “… I don’t know what it is but just like the Fujifilm look”. For me is the same as people talking about the “Leica look”. It’s like you took it out of the box and used Provia/Std straight profile? You shot jpeg or raw? You edited or are this SOOC? Do you use film simulations? Just for helping me understanding better how you got those wonderful pictures even if l do know how to capture on my camera those pictures that please me. I really enjoyed the video and is nice to see someone pushing up the xt5 on times others are trashing the brand around bad firmware updates.

      Great points Oscar and thank you for calling attention to that. I shoot raw, standard profile, no film simulations or anything special. I believe Fuji has a way of rendering colors that is very pleasing and that is the Fuji look to me. I do not understand camera technology enough to explain how this happens, but I do know that each camera company has different colors that are emphasized or rendered in a more pleasing way even on normal raw files. I also agree that Leica files are incredible, and it boils down to color cast and contrast (in my opinion). I will try to explain this more clearly moving forward. Thanks again for chiming in and watching! The xt5 is an incredible camera, and I agree, there’s been way too many videos bashing it, likely just so they can get views. Cheers 🤙🏻

      The fuji sensor is a bit different from everybody else's, specifically the arrangement of color filters. I don't "know", but I think that's part of it. As for the film sims...I generally prefer Capture One's interpretations to the in-camera ones (and they are subtly but obviously different if you shoot jpg+raw and look at them next to each other or do an ABX test). fwiw, between film sim bracketing (it just makes 3 jpgs from each raw capture) and x-raw-studio, there's a lot to play with even after the fact if you prefer fuji's film sims.

      @@SamBugas i tend to wind up shooting very contrasty scenes, just because of what I like to point the camera at. If I had a complaint about the xt5, it's that i can't configure exactly where the highlight alerts go off like you can on a couple cameras. It'll retain detail brighter than it tells you it will (even with natural live view, which removes the film sim from evf/lcd and lets you basically see the raw). As a result, I'm often compromising in camera and adjusting shadows, highlights, or both in CO...basically JPGs aren't really an option a lot of the time unless I want to manage a bunch of custom profiles...which isn't what i call fun. At least right now, i mostly switch the sim based on what I want to see in the viewfinder (usually acros+r) and then decide later. I did an event-ish thing last weekend that I was sure I'd end up printing in b/w...nope. Classic Chrome (capture one's version) won by a mile with very little editing necessary. Based on what I was seeing IRL, i don't know that i even would have looked at it in camera that way.
