CT6-V / CT6V Blackwing Engine Cold start

Since it appears that the CT6-V is becoming popular again in the community, I saw that there were a ton of cold start videos that had a bit of degradation of the sound. So being within a pretty filled garage, with no wind, and the microphone directly to the business end, I would provide an updated cold start for the LTA Blackwing engine. Headphones are strongly recommended. 0:00 Initial start u...

    I live in Southern California. We had temps of 123 124 this summer! Of course I wasn't driving the caddy! Mine is still running it's oem carb. A Carter AFB. My parents bought it in 1960. I was 1 year old it was our daily driver all thru the 60s and mid 70s. Palms Springs car. I remember taking long road trips in the summer from home to Missouri to visit relatives in the car. Think we did that 4 times. It certainly got driven regularly in110 to 115 deg temps in the summer . Fortunately it has factory AC. I don't ever recall any vapor lock issues. However, my brother bought a 61 Dodge polara in 67 and that car DID have issues with vapor lock in the summer time. I have to say the sound of your cranking engine sounds EXACTLY like mine. And if I don't start it up after a few weeks, it definitely cranks quite a bit as it has to draw from the tank! Lol. I also had to have the original engine rebuilt in 2011. Was running fine but blow by had become super excessive. I'm a stickler for keeping as much of the car as original as possible. And pretty much everything you see and touch is original to the car. So I asked the engine builder to keep anything he felt could be retained from the engine. Basically, it just needed a hone job, new pistons, bearings and of course gaskets and seals. We kept the Crank, rocker assemblys, push rods. Of course it was sent to a machine shop for the block heads inspection, and crank polishing. They said nothing other than a tired engine was found, and that all the bearings while worn, were not in bad shape! Can't wait to see your awsome 58 when finished! 😊

      Thanks. I bet that Polara is a looker, as before I stumbled on this, I was in line to grab a 1960 DeSoto Adventurer, sadly the owner changed their mind and this came up. I did want to keep this as original as possible, unfortunately the cost to keep it original outdated the cost of just updating it with more modern tech. That and with limited access to folks that could help me work on the car, I had to go with the latter of those two. Unfortunately one of these will be the paint as she is far off. But hopefully we will have both the interior (back to proper original order using the same cloth by CPR and unfortunately SMS) and the exterior up to snuff next year. Chrome is going to be expensive sad to say and that will be a bit longer.

      @@nicholasjohnson6880You have already come a long way! I don't consider a repant a sin at all. Especially if it's the same original color. My Cadillac is Prestwick Gray, Its very nice. And 2 tone silver interior. Thank God it isnt that AWFUL GREEN color, with Green interior! Yuck! What were they thinking with that! Lol. I pretty much just cruise her around town couple times a month. Errands, drive it over to the neighboring town about 5 miles away to stretch her legs, and local car shows once in awhile. I put up some pictures of the car that were taken over the years, most have pictures with the family by it. Theres one picture of Dad holding me in front of the car when I was 1. Somtines people ask me, who is the baby in this picture? I say ME! LOL. They can't believe its been in the family this long! I'm 65!😅

    So you installed an electric fuel pump. Shouldn't be pumping like that. Should only run till carb is primed, then shut off. And why is it so loud? I've stayed with a mechanical pump on my 58. Needs replacement about every 4 or 5 years. Super easy job on this car..

    • @nicholasjohnson6880
      @nicholasjohnson6880 4 дні тому

      Since I’m not running an original carb, and because it gets extremely hot in my state, I elected to go with a fuel pump instead of the mechanical fuel pump. As in my prior car, the vapor lock was insane. Additionally, it was installed when the cylinders were egg shaped and the engine was is terrible, but running condition. The new fuel pumps they sell now are absolute garbage and have only lasted one year or so from my personal experience. So, I elected to get a Holley sport fuel pump and have that instead. No problems in the winter or summer. (It’s a performance version, so that’s probably why it’s loud.) Going down the road though you can hardly hear it so I don’t mind. However, if I ever decide to (since the engine has gone through a full rebuild from the block up), I do have the ability to just quickly swap to a mechanical fuel pump. The nice thing about having a fuel pump I can turn off at will is being able to use all the gas in the float bowl. Allowing me on the next start up in regular temperatures to be quick and direct with fresh fuel not exposed to the environment. Especially after it’s been sitting a while.

    I'm almost certain that you put so much heat on the piece that you got it out of temper. That laser is for cleaning rust on heavier materials, that is, products that do not risk being damaged by the temperature. For that type of piece, a 200w or 300w pulsed laser is recommended, it does not overheat, the finish is spectacular and the risk of damage is 0%.

      Not hard at all, Unfortunately for our Turkish and Ukrainian friends who sell these absolutely POSes, they don’t take the time to do that. Additionally the fakes are now being tracked by the serial numbers, and the factories in China haven’t introduced a new serial in about a year. (Which, unfortunately for them, we added immediately to the list). We have a better guide located on our public subreddit if you want to take a gander on how awful they are. www.reddit.com/r/STDupont/s/FZNtAvJAiT It’s usually the main way on how we do quick authentication now, and I do my best to keep it updated weekly.

    Are you familiar with SMS Auto Interior? I'm sure that they probably have all of the original fabric, leather, vinyl and carpet. Personally, I'd find an upholstery shop that's willing and skilled enough to just replace what's worn out... Provided that most of it is salvageable and that nothing just "looks good" but is rotten... Many years ago, I had a DeSoto with a literally dead-mint interior, but all of the foam was nothing but dust. I had an upholsterer carefully remove the seat skins and refoam the seats and he also restritched all the seams on those seat covers. It was absolutely beautiful when they were finished and it only cost about one third the price of a full reupholstery job. Cheers!

      I am unfortunately. Back when I was more eccentric towards the Ford look vehicles specifically a 1960 De Soto adventure I only saw horror story after horror story with them. However, it been 10 years. I’m working with CPR who have a contract with SMS to get the interior fabric so far I have the headliner fabric and also the Calcutta cloth. I’m waiting on getting the silver colored leather and the gun medal silver floor fabric in. I just ordered a crap ton of other parts for the car as well and we are going to start attacking it very seriously at the start of next month so you’ll be able to see a little bit more as to how she has come along since the posting of this video

    Would you be able to do this with a Ligne 1 model? There isn't a single video or tutorial anywhere in the world for that model

      Would need to invest in a Ligne 1 model to get it going and talk with Jeremy to make sure that we don’t mess it up!

    I would totally buy one of these if the price was between 2-3k dollars. Definitely not tens of thousands dollars.

      All depends on your location and whether or not you are fine with having it be a used model instead of new. There are a few groups on Facebook that have used models going for around $5-6k for this amount of Wattage, and cheaper for lower models as well. Would check the laser cleaning community Facebook groups to see what’s available.
