Are your BMX bars bent? A quick way to make sure your bars are strait.
In this video we take a look at a quick and easy way to check if your handlebars are bent. This is especially important if you are planning to refinish or restore a set of bars, as you don't want to go to that time and effort only to discover that the bars are bent when you put them on the bike.
Often when you buy a set of old bars for a project you have very little knowledge of their history, so this "how to" will allow you to quickly check if they are good to use on your build.

Переглядів 1713 місяці тому
In this video we look at the variations in the Mid School Haro Sports, and highlight some variations that will help you identify the model year of any particular bike you are looking at. Many bashguard sports are incorrectly dated, and this is because the bikes look very similar across the years. Add to this the fact that many of them have been refinished or restored, and it can be difficult to...

    Great series and very well put together. I like learning about all BMX history as I grew up in the late old school days and wanted a 1987 GT PFT, Haro Master or Haro Sport but I didn’t have the funds and I had to go with a 1987 Dyno D-Tour. Keep up the great work!

    Great restoration! Really gave me a flashback of me maintaining and rebuilding my bikes back in the day! A couple things though. One, I didn’t know that clipping the gyro cable was an option and then having a “replacement head” hat is this witchery? I don’t think these were available back in my time of the mid to late 80’s than early 90’s? What is that piece called? Secondly, a lot of people don’t understand the importance of what I call bearing grease, maybe lithium grease these days? Put that on everything just as you did in the video! Back in the day though, I read an article in BMX Plus on maintaining your breaks, and one of the things I always did, was take a plastic Ziploc baggie, get a gob of bearing grease on it, remove the brake cable from the housing, then run the inner cable through the grease and insert it back into the housing. Will make your brakes feel like butter! Everyone always asked me back in the day why my brakes were so smooth…. That was it! Plus it makes your cables last longer!

    • @themidschoolsessions
      @themidschoolsessions Місяць тому

      Glad you enjoyed it! The “knarp” used to shorten the upper cable is a Dia Compe item not an Odyssey item. They came with the 990 brakes so that you could set your own straddle cable length. Using it on the lever end to adjust the Gyro cable is an old mid school hack and it works amazingly well. Agree on the grease. Makes everything run so much better! I have a separate video in the how to section that deep dives on the gyro setup if you are interested to know a bit more detail. 👍

    Just curious about the barrel adjusters…. If they are all the way screwed out , won’t that make it difficult to tighten the slack once the cable is stretched and broken in?

    • @themidschoolsessions
      @themidschoolsessions 2 місяці тому

      No not at all. You can adjust it at the brake calliper for the lower section, or the “splitter” in the upper cable if the slack is above the gyro. It’s far more important to use the barrel adjusters on the gyro plates to balance the system, and then use the other adjustment points for cable tension. Hope that helps.

    Is it true that the 1999 ‘Hevron Bars’, without the knurling on the top bar, like that came on the Zippo, are hi-ten steal not full chromoly? So were lower quality and to go on cheaper bikes.

    • @themidschoolsessions

      Yes, by that stage Haro had the Mirra Pro bar and the Kneesaver 2 bar, so the regular kneesavers we only specced on entry models.

    So I’m curious, did you realize you have a semi pro hub in the front and a regular loose ball hub in the rear? My semi pros front and rear had those Suzue rubber/metal dust covers. … they are impossible to get if they’re damaged.

    • @themidschoolsessions
      @themidschoolsessions 4 місяці тому

      Yes that’s correct. You can also see that when I strip the rear hub the grease in there was pretty fresh. I suspect that the rear hub had been recently serviced, and as you say, the old rear seals were replaced with more readily available steel ones. I can only speculate though, but that seems the most likely reason. 👍

    Great video. Gonna take a look through your others 👍 Takes me back to being a teenager putting my own bikes together. Never had the luxury of a stand tho! Had a love/hate relationship with gyros. Would have been good to shorten the top cable like you did. Remember trying to use cut down plug terminals to shorten the top cable at the gyro end. Ground the headtube down on a pk ripper to fit a gyro too 😂

      I never had a stand back in the day either. I’m just getting old now haha. Yes shortening the top cable makes a huge difference, but all the little tweaks add up. They can work really well with a bit of fiddling here and there. Hope you enjoy the other videos as well. 👍

    Back in the days of mid-school Haro,s in my opinion the Team Master was the top ranking Haro , you couldn’t get better than that when it came to Haro bicycles . The FST & the FSX were entry level Haro,s , then came the Sport , The Team Sport mid level Haro,s , then the Air Master entry-level pro bicycle , then the Master & Team Master , top of the top pro level , not including any group one bicycles just because they were strictly racing . The Team Master any of them were the best of Haro bicycles , you couldn’t get a better bike than that . Over the years back when I rode my first Haro was the 1987 Team Sport , the 1988 FSX , the 1989 Team Master with the bash guard in black , the 1990 Master with the flat bottom bash guard / grey with purple specks & mother of pearl over spray , & the 1992 Air Master / neon red . I to this day still own all of these bikes , they are from my childhood & over the years I have put the same parts on every one of them , the only thing that’s different with them is the frame & fork every part on each bike is the same down to the cranks , grips , seat , headset , rims everything & don’t get me wrong all of them are different beast & ride differently , just because they have the same parts on them don’t make them the same bike when it comes down to it , the frame & forks play a big part & difference in each bike & how they ride , hell you can blindfold me & let me ride each bike & by the way that they ride I can tell you which bike I’m on , I know the feel of each bike by how they ride .
