CUOIO SONORO
Italy
Приєднався 24 чер 2019
Hey folks, my name is Ilaria (A.K.A Airali) and I am the hands, the camera and the sounds behind this channel.
I founded my brand "Cuoio Sonoro" on April 2019 and my leather workshop is located in Montecchio, a lovely medieval borough surrounded by some sweet hills in Umbria, the green heart of Italy.
If you are already into leather craft or you're just curious to find out more, well you are in the right place. I will try to document as much as I can, sharing with you my experience as a slow maker.
As music holds a great part of my soul, there will be some guitar playing in the mix as well.
Stay tuned!

I play "Feeling Fine" by Alex Hutchins using the Custom Leather Strap I made!
In this video I am finally putting together Music and Craft, the reason why I founded my brand Cuoio Sonoro (freely translated as “Sonorous Leather” by me from the italian, LoL).
My dream is to craft high quality and custom accessories for musicians who wish to have unique pieces, specially crafted for them. Being a musician myself, helps a lot this process because I can relate with most of the issues and needs of musicians, and if not, I am eager for challenges and for learning new skills through different and unknown projects.
Sounds are everywhere, and even if a greater part of them is considered noise, it always depends on how we listen to them. In my workshop I am surrounded by sounds that pop up while using the variety of tools and materials I interact with, and I like to imagine that it’s my tiny orchestra I can play with.
My previous videos follow this phylosophy of giving attention to the music every object carries within. The hammer’s “tap-tap” onto carving tools that sounds like a drum roll. The stitching machine which runs fast under my foot that reminds me a musical march or a fast-paced music. The adagio tempo I drown in while hand stitching leather, whose rhythm is repetitive and slow, as if it were following an internal bpm.
These are only a few examples but on the top of these lay the profound happiness and gratitude I feel when someone tells me that what I crafted moved his/her feelings and went over the excpetations or truly embodied the blurred idea they had in mind which I managed to let bloom. Acknowledging the fact that people trust and rely on you is priceless, because this gives you the freedom to create and express yourself with no boundaries.
And if we talk about music related projects, my heart jumps a beat from the joy!
That’s what lately happened with Paolo’s request!
He is a bass player and needed a leather strap for his future custom electric basses currently under construction at Rossella’s workshop. Rossella is a young and fine liuther I met in Milan 2 years ago after I took part at the SHG Music Show as an artisan, exhibiting my works, the ones which openly reveal my soft spot for music :-D (link at Rossella’s website below)
Why did I think to play an extract of the song called “Feeling Fine” by Alex Hutchins for this video? Firstly because I have been loving it since the first “heard” and also because it truly expresses with no words (and even better) what Music and Fine Art mean to me, specially when mixed together. Hence, I picked it as the soundtrack of this showreel, trying humbly to make it sound nicely but mostly to spread the joy of playing music for you!
Regarding the strap, it’s made of vegetable tanned leather from Tuscan tannery named “La Perla Azzurra”, it features a personalized leather carving layout I made especially for Paolo from a design he sent me. He is passionate about the zodiac symbol of Capricorn and after he saw the monochromatic carving I sculpted, he asked me if I could paint it like an old, rusty brass underwater find. I can’t hide I was looking forward to experiment this odd request (Paolo himself said that he was worried to have been too pretentious and demanding), but he still didn’t know how much I love to measure myself with unconventional projects!
On the top of that, to give a more comfortable wearing to the strap, I have chosen to put an inner dense memory foam padding, lined with a soft sueded leather for extra grip on the shoulder and solid brass buckle to adjust the length.

Making a Leather Weight Bag (for tracing/tooling/stamping)
Переглядів 3,6 тис.5 років тому
Hey there, here is me making a little leather weight bag from a fishing weights fabric sachet. It's a huge help especially when tooling, because it prevents the leather from moving while stamping, and it keeps patterns and templates firm in place when tracing. Now that is covered in leather, besides being outwardly stylish, it is functional because there is no risk of scratching or marking the ...

[DIY] Convert a shelf unit in a leather rolled storage rack - part I
Which tool do you use to cut the leather?
@@douglasalbuquerque4282 Hi, it is a leather strip cutter. Just 2 pieces of wood and a blade. The depth cut is adjustable and the blade replaceble. Very handy tool for strap and belts.
Before you dyed it, how do you get the indent marks to have contrasting color? 🤔
Hi Sarah, the colour contrast comes naturally during the tooling because the leather is dump and the metal tools pressed with the hammer, besides leaving a deep mark, they also darken the leather. Leather shouldn't be too dry during the tooling otherwise these kind of colour contrast is less evident. Hope I managed to answer your question. Thanks for watching the video!
@@CUOIOSONORO Wow, thanks!!! This is so cool, and thank you so much for responding 🙏I really appreciate it.
Нет слов , красотища 🤗
Absolutely beautiful work! Incredible skill.
Thanks a lot!!
Hello, has this ever been used on a classical acoustic guitar ( or nylon or metal strings)? How is it attached? Does the top of the guitar have to be drilled into? or is it stuck on with something like contact cement?. Does it muffle the sound from an acoustic guitar? Can the pick guard be used percussion wise to drum on or does the leather dampen any drum beat? When playing does the thickness matter in terms of it being too high and close to the strings? Curious because trying to figure out how to use this for sound and handling of the guitar purposes?
Nice work I will be doing some leather work with 3d printing on my channel. Guitar straps are a started work from my past so with new tech I have learned mixed with old world leather...metlman

Beautiful work! Well done! I really hope to see more music and guitar related leather projects. Leather stuff in general, too, of course. 😊

Beautiful!
Hello, what material do you use for the padding? polyethylene?
Foam rubber bought at a local leather shop
Que material usas para el acolchado.? Poliestileno?
Bravissima Ilaria ! che tocco e che mood ! Vogliamo parlare poi di questa bellissima tracolla ?😊❤
Now that is a guitar strap made me realize i need plan out a lot better on the one I am going to make lol Yours is awesome good job
Very well done!
Hola soy John ese es un hermosa correa para guitarra en cuero ,me podrías vender el patrón de la correa de la guitarra por favor?o dónde puedo encontrarlo?,,espero su respuesta ,gracias.
Amazing work l. The brushing and finishing techniques you use are a master class on attention to detail. I can tell you’ve been doing this a long time. What foam did you use? I would like to get some and try it but I didn’t notice a product name like some of the other things you used. Thanks for the fantastic video.
Thanks a lot Erik! I love to pay attention to the smallest details. I have started working with leather almost 5 years ago, it's an endless learning and developing process. I used a 5mm foam, doesn't have brand, but you easily find it at leather or upholstery shops! Good luck with your leather crafting. All the best!
I would love to buy one!
Hi! Thanks a lot for the interest, here is the link to my website if you want to take a look to some other custom guitat straps I have made and there are also a few ready made basic straps available in the shop! www.cuoiosonoro.it
i’m getting ready to make my own guitar strap. what sort of leather is this, what is the thickness? do you buy it locally or online? i’m totally new to this, and you clearly are very skilled at it. any advice would be awesome. thanks
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I missed it! It's natural veg tanned leather from Tuscany, full grain, in this strap I used 2mm thickness.
what size is that hole punch for the guitar button to go through?
Oval punch found on ebay 3cm length
Bravissima!!😊🎸
Grazie mille Alex!! :-)
The fingernails of a guitarist ...
Que belleza!
Preciosa version, demasiada dulzura junta!!
Gorgeous work, sir! In particular, the carving is by far the most appropriate and beautiful I have seen for a musical instrument strap. Forgive an old man for ignorance, but what is the significance of the hands you carved?
Hi, I am a lady. Thank you so much Herman. The hands have been asked from the customer and they symbolize a concert crowd.
I love your strap, one of my favorites, especially the graphics you tooled.
Thanks a lot! It's sweet of you to say!!
That was awesome. Great video!
The guitar strap is gorgeous but, your hands are sublime!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Did you bake it afterword for rigidity or glue it onto a rigid backer? Great work! I’m inspired to do something like this on my custom guitars a la Hutchinson Guitars et al.
No cooking involved, I glued a rigid layer!
More!!! I’m too immature to do this right and need more inspiration. Great job!!!
Enjoyed the video and the craftsmanship involved in the making and videoing. As custom guitar builder I appreciate how a strap like this would complement one of my guitars. Thanks
Thanks a lot Paul for taking your time watching my video! I really appreciate, especially from a guitar builder! If you are interested in a collaboration, please keep in touch. I have already been working with several liuther here in Italy and is a lot of fun!
Very beautiful and professional strap. I also love the quality of the video. Lots of close ups showing technique, but not showing every minute of the making, just a small piece of all the many steps it takes to make a fine product. I am just getting prepared to make my first.
Thank you so much! I am glad you enjoyed the video and I hope it'll be helpful for your upcoming project!! Good luck!!
So tasteful, so beautiful! 😍👍SUB🔔
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate! 😊
Where can I find the right thickness of leather for straps? Where can I buy leather starting out Thais appropriate?
Hi, I use 2mm leather thickness for padded straps and 3/3.5mm for single strip strap. I buy leather directly at tuscan tanneries.
where did you buy that dye that makes the slots for the strap adjustments?
Hi!
5:52 what is this material you use ?
It's a 5mm foam pad!
The work was fantastic. Some sort of narrative would have been welcome but you're an artist to be sure. I loved this.
Thanks a lot Steven, I'll keep in mind for the next videos!
Wow that's awesome work can you make one for me I didn't find any good strap here which cause my shoulder injury
Hi there! Thank you so much! Sure, I would love to help you! Contact me by email at cuoiosonoro@hotmail.com or via Instagram or Facebook, just digit "Cuoio Sonoro" on social media.
can you give a description of all of the products and tools you used to complete this project. What was the product that you used at the end on the edge and then used the roller tool and the sand paper again over it, what grit sand paper etc... Thanks
Beautiful work! Thank you for showing us how you make your straps. Can I ask what you use as the lining on the backside? It appears to be fairly stiff vs something softer like a suede.
Thanks a lot! It's pig skin, it is rough, suede like, and it helps the strap being steady on the shoulder.
wow !!! a work of ART .... beautiful ...
Thank you very much, it's very kind from you!
I wish you had listed some of the tools you used.
Thanks for the interest Skash! I might do a specific video about the tools I use in the future 😉
Hi where did you get the pattern? Thank you Steve
Hi Steve, I used my old pickguard to trace the pattern. Don't know if you meant that or the layout. The floral design has been taken from a book called Sheridan Style Carving.
This is awesome! I love the leather you used, what kind is it? Looks like the perfect size for any project. Have a nice day!:)
Thank you so much!! 😀 it's really the perfect thickness for most of the project. It's among 1.4-1.6 cm! It's hand dyed veg tanned leather. Have a nice day you too!
@@CUOIOSONORO by the way i just happened to watch ur video of the duet you performed with the acoustic guitar. Hell yeah! I thought it was awesome cover!! thnks a lot!!
Beautiful job!!! I was wondering what you used for the padding, is it 1/4 inch high density foam?
Thanks! More or less, the thickness is 6mm!
