Hi Janet! 😊 I find that it’s not always necessary. Layers of paint can seal the page in the same way gesso does, and I love working directly on the paper. I often start with a layer of collage, but I also enjoy working directly on the actual page too.

Thanks so much! The flower is a paper cutting, and the leaves are collage papers I created earlier, mostly my own gelli plate prints. Some of the leaves came from an old art journal page that fell out of one of my journals, but I decided to save and use later. I love keeping old materials for art journaling but they so stack up! Do you do that too? 😊

Thanks so much! I really love working this way, the pages end up telling such a story and it creates so much depth. I didn't let the pink dry before adding the white, if you look very carefully you can see how there's a little pink mixed with the white all over the stenciled area. Very subtle, though! And the blues I've used are Phathlo Turquoise (fluid acrylic paint) and Turquoise (acrylic ink). 😊 I absolutely love turquoise so it makes an appearance in nearly everything that I make! 😄

Thank you for your comment, I relate to this so much. 💖 Creating art on top of your words, in a way, seals them onto the pages forever, and no one ever has to know what you’ve journaled about. I love scribbling because it allows me to get my thoughts out quickly-there’s no pressure, and no one can read what I’ve written-not even me! This way, my scribbles can peek through my art. Starting with journaling and adding layers on top creates a safe space where you can be completely honest and raw with your emotions, without worrying about anyone reading them later. Plus creating the art will make you feel much better as creativity always does, so it really is such a beautiful process. ❤😊

I love keeping old sketches and paintings for this purpose but you do end up with loads over time!😄 It's just to lovely to reuse them, creates personal history in the art journals but also they make really gorgeous collage. ❤

They're called catalyst wedges or silicone wedges, and you can find various options at any art store or on Amazon 😊My favorite silicone wedge is actually a baking tool from IKEA, so you might find cheaper alternatives in shops that sell kitchen tools. 😊
