TherapyRoute.com is a world-class mental health service directory and professional blogging platform. We hold a deep respect for the sanctity of the psychotherapeutic relationship and the boundaries this requires. The only thing distinguishing a patient from a therapist is their respective roles in the setting and that they are often the same person at different times. We are aware that no one is immune to the human condition, we are all vulnerable and we are all in this together.

Should psychodynamic psychotherapists and psychoanalysts apply the same technique to all patients? Watch Prof Mark Solms deliver an exceptionally accessible integration of the psychoanalytic model of the mind, its relation to psychoanalytic diagnostic categories, and the implications of these for treatment and technique. I can confidently say that watching, and grasping, these three video's wil...

Specialization is Compartmentalization This is why academics of any field should study philosophy. A synthesis of the physical and metaphysical, the object and the subject, is vital to formulating a full comprehension of any topic. The ancients referred to certain philosophers doctors of the soul, they were the first psychologists, even then they understood that a doctor of the body can not heal certain ailments without consulting the doctor of the soul. The divorce of science and art is detrimental.
These two lectures are so brilliantly accessible and important!
Very good, thanks
Dr. Solms is a precious source of understanding of the brain and mind. 🍾
Mark Solms is a truly learned man.
The law of the third

Hobson, a physiologist(?) killed psychoanalysis in 1975+ Wow, a tragedy, in my mind.
This sounds like he - the dreamer - the little boy who was trying to protect himself, via the overcoat - feeling insecure in his, now, vulnerable self. Especially since it's a reoccurring dream. Is this a psychotic episode or one of attempted self preservation? Who can blame him? The question I have is what if he had not connected with you. Mark did save him; there must be thousands of individuals similar to this gentleman who deteriorate into dementia, instead of becoming stabilized. I guess you addressed all my questions, as I write and think, as Mark speaks. How many practitioners of all sorts understand similar cases? Thanks for sharing.
I have long wondered if dementia occurs following one's loss of identity which is usually accompanied by stress and recent emotional trauma. Then, perhaps something triggers the beginning of dementia. I believe that dementia and Alzheimers are misunderstood. I've read that Alzheimers can only be verified by an autopsy; this is verifiable data.
This unfortunate Electrical Engineer does not sound like an unhappy alcoholic, coupled with a poor diet lacking in thiamine which is how current MD's perceive such individuals. A Neuropsychologist, analyst, etc. could have inquired about his earliest memories and whether there was family dysfunction. This would be the likely starting point for such a patient. Sadly, science seems to be decades away from acceptance of neuro-anything other than neurology. I can only applaud Dr. Solms for his tenaciousness educational efforts. My personal life experiences strongly support his work.
TIA, not TBI
No comments? I finally have found a Freudian who is able to speak of the problems in psychoanalysis as an organization. I am an outsider, not even a licensed professional. I can only see that the IPA and the APA is a chaotic excuse for a supposedly professional entity that is available to serve the public. To me, I theorize that to outsiders the IPA & APA is experiencing an inner or intra-power struggle fighting over minutia. My sole client was myself - I successfully cured my anxiety neurosis. Ask me anything about the nine years I spent as an analysand beginning in my mid 20s, in the 1970s. It helped yet it was far from a cure. I can now understand what went wrong, and why - if anyone cares. And I also could say why I chose psychoanalysis and why I believed that it was necessary for me. Everything needed for a full cure was just under the surface, but the technique was off by miles. Now, I fully understand what went wrong - we both failed. Need some hints? Just ask. In my late 40's I required another analysis. I thought I could do better. One need not be brilliant, only curious, smart, driven, and persistent. When the finale arrives, those that get there know that they have been cured, no doubts. I'll admit that I self secluded - I wanted no distractions from other confused friends who were not involved in self observation. Nor did I have children - by choice. I was also self-employed, therefore, I owned my time and life - for better or worse. I think Mark Solms puts a correct diagnosis to both the IPA & the APA: Fundamental Psychoanalysts; the ones that fixate on the original theory of Freud, from early 1900s. Are they waiting for the return of Freud? I was raised by authoritarian Christians; rigidity kills the spirit and the sole.
The following are the writings of Freud from which Solms structures this lecture: On Narcissism: An introduction (1914) Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning (1911) Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921, this one not so sure but the part about ego ideal, ideal of the ego is here) The Ego and the Id (1923) Instincts and Their Vicissitudes (1915) Repression (1915) The Unconscious (1915) Also a lot of these texts are sumarized in An Outline of Psychoanalysis (1938) Not so sure which of Kleins writings is he basing on but a lot of what he talks about is on "Envy and gratitude & other works, 1946-1963"
Thank you for sharing this
❤ very important
Does anyone know if Solms has written about the distinction between transference neuroses, narcissistic neuroses and psychoses he outlines in this video?
“The Overcoat,” eh? Russian literature strikes again. I recall seeing a a man with early Lewy Body dementia who was having rather vivid hallucinations. He also happened to be a Buddhist priest and would dispel the various shapes and creatures by performing a short prayer and ritual. That way they wouldn’t bother him as much when they would appear at night.
How long was the Buddhist able to keep the wolves away? Lewy body sounds organic, however. Not an initial loss of identity.
As a neurologist, listening to Prof Mark Salms, I just realized the goal of proper clinical practice in my field. Thank you for making these talks available on UA-cam!
The most important psychoanalyst of our time
I hope I never meet you after somebody has assaulted me......got mk ultra?
Perhaps erotica transference here
Eh?
I don't understand the expression around 0:55-56. "There's a (...) between ego and id, between ego and superego." It sounds like "rent" but that can't be right?
rent - verb, to tear with violent force
@@jamescronan7220 thanks. Didn't know this expression.

I have ADHD and take medication to increase dopamine but oddly enough, I dream less. It’s the opposite of what Mark Solms has found. I wish I could agree with him. I really miss dreaming.
There are multiple subtypes of dopamine receptors and various drugs influence different subtypes differently. However, most stimulants of the phenethylamine class are not direct agonists (antipsychotics have direct antagonist effects), but rather influence release and reuptake through several mechanisms - over time compensation occurs resulting in the long-term behavioral effects of those stimulants. Direct agonists like pramipexole are notorious for worsening REM sleep behavior disorder, vivid dreams and psychosis.
Thanks for sharing.
Wow.
Brilliant.
Does Prof. Solms somewhere go over the same range of material, in the same detail, but from the viewpoint of the "conscious Id" concept?
Did you find anything re: this?
A real practical insight from a genius teacher I am a doctor and he has given me new knowledge
Dr. Sacco, What's your take on Gerald Edelman's technical work? (To me, he seems a very deep and important thinker who is unjustly depreciated and overlooked.)
Terrific! Neuropsychoanalysis is the road ahead!
Fantastic!
