JST Toneforge Disruptor | Djent Amp Sim from the future?
In the past year I tried almost all amp sims and most of them are very disappointing for me with a few exceptions ... 1. S-gear by Scuffham is the most realistic amp sim out there ... I really get the feel that I am actually playing an amp ... for high gain though there is some tweaking needed, but metal tones are really possible to get with this amp sim ... that said, I like the 80's sounding metal tones better than modern metal tones, maybe that needs to be considered ... in general I think "modern metal"-people use to much gain anyway 2. Everything ML Sound Labs does is great, mix-ready and clean ... it's a treat
btw. love your channel and great taste for sound!
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Very hard disagree on point one. I’ve tried s-gear 2 on a number of different kinds of tones and it sounds bad on everything except low gain leads. Whether it’s cleans, modern high gain, classic high gain, nope. Sorry. But if you like it and enjoy it, carry on! That’s what matters most! But on point 2, yeah ML are the GOAT for amp sims right now, the only company consistently making sims that almost feel like playing through a real amp IMO. Since making this video, I have acquired their entire catalogue and my impression of Mikko’s work is even higher than it was when I made this video! Thanks again for watching! -Toby
@@AiiZStudio Thanks Toby .. don't need to feel sorry, I love the honesty. That's why I am subscribed to your channel. I am really curious what makes some amp sims sound great for one person and sound really bad for another ... could it be the initial input volume? or the type of audio interrface? Active/passive pick ups of the guitar? Do we really hear the same sound on different systems? Just a few questions. btw I am just a music enthousiast and not a professional musician/audio guy and my setup is very low budget.
@bartholomeusclever glad to hear it! For me it’s the harmonic/saturation/compression/sag of an amp sim. Some (such as bias fx, s-gear, amplitube) feel/sound like a flat 2d distortion, whereas something like ML’s new Blackout plugin has a much more “3D” distortion to it, that distorts the harmonics differently to how it distorts the fundamental. I might be explaining that badly. Maybe I should do a video on that subject specifically 🤔 -Toby
Nice cover ! Which preset did you use ?
Thank you! It was a while ago, I can’t remember I’m afraid. If I still have the session, I’ll double check and get back to you! -Toby
This sounds amazing, especially those kicks and snares.... oof! But that 42 gig library.... also oof, but not in the good way!
Yeah! I’m very impressed! A lot of fun! 42GB may be big compared to other kontakt libraries, but it’s tiny compared to superior drum libraries haha. -Toby
Thanks so much for the kind words Toby! Really happy you like the drums. \m/
Thanks so much for sending them over! They rule, you rule! -Toby
Great job Toby!!
Thanks for watching!!
Yes!!!! I’m the 1st view!!! 💪🏼
Hell yeah!
I'm think to get this grit drum kit. Is really worth it?
I use it for months now. The kit is killer sounding. It takes little to no effort to mix. A bit of comp, EQ, saturaration and maybe a bit of transient shaping and that's it !
Yeah it’s very good! That’s what I used in the demo song with no external processing! -Toby
That’s a very handsome chap there
❤️
Instant purchase, and I got a 5153 Stealth 50w
It’s so bloody good. Makes me want an IRL stealth now to sit next to my OG 6l6! -Toby
@AiiZStudio I love mine, it's such a great amp. Playing through it now.
@@jackbootshamangaming4541hell yeah!
Toby CRUSHING us with tones once again!! Oh and ML Drums is a nice addition <3 Did you seriously use the first channel for this demo?
Love you Mikko! Yes! Genuinely! 😂 EMG pickups with 24v mod probably helped, and dining the gain on the amp and the drive pedal 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻 -Toby
@mlsoundlab and ML Bass!
EMGs with 24v mod are the ideal actives imo. Fishmans are great and have more versatility but EMGs sound better for the active@@AiiZStudio
@ I think the EMG 81 is the greatest pickup of all time, and will gladly fight anyone who disses it! 😂 -Toby
Thank you for the review bro! Really glad you enjoyed it and we have plenty more to come if you're interested in further testing! :D
Hell yeah! Thanks for sending over the samples! We’ll be using them a bunch! -Toby
Absolutely monster amp, ML always delivers quality stuff Great video mate!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I honestly think ML are the GOATs right now for authentic sounding sims! -Toby
@@AiiZStudio To be honest i use most of the time Neural Stuff, because of the overall quality of amps, all the fx and so on,, at this point i just can't justify to buy more amp sims, but ML Soundlab makes fantastic sims and i use some in my productions as well!
Noice! Sounds awesome!
Thanks for watching! -Toby
24:51 [ I didn't say "pingy" don't drink ]
Heh heh heh loophole 😂 -Toby
when not doing palm mutes your guitars sound too much upfront in the high mids, perhaps next time use some gullfoss on top of it to real-time equalize the guitars
I intentionally had no plugins on anything so you could hear everything natural. The actual song will have real amps and will be mixed by Ruben, but thanks for your input! But beware of using too much of gullfoss and soothe on guitars, the upper mids is where the aggression is and you can end up with guitars that sound toothless! -Toby
@@AiiZStudio I think soothe is well suited for cymbals and vocals but not for guitar, it's the wrong tool for the job, I use gulfoss not to take anything away but keep the EQ spectrum balanced in real time like one would do with a mutliband compressor or manual EQ automatization. I tend to make palm mutes actually brighter with gullfoss. To take the harshness away I usually have to take a way 2 or 3 frequencies with a narrow notch.
@@robbeaertscomposer I don’t have gullfoss, but will quite often use Saturn to saturate the mids further and give the tone more bite! -Toby
sick freaking cover!
Thank you sir! -Toby
Great video man. Can I use these midi drums in any midi program?
Thanks for watching! You should be able to use these in any DAW! -Toby
What libraries would you suggest for neo-soul, and some of the lighter indie sub-genres as well? TY
I don’t have any experience with those genres, sorry. We only really work with metal, punk, and hardcore. -Toby
Great video, thanks for sharing. I went to get the free trial version to use in Reaper and so far it only loads up as the stand alone version. I have grabbed the VST3 file and copied it to common files/VST3 in Program Files, re scanned Reaper for new plugins, but not listed...? Can anybody tell me if I have to purchase this plugin (40 euros at time of writing) first before being able to use as a VST? Is there some sort of block on it? Thanks again for inspiring me to try to get these great sounds!
I would suggest hitting up support, they should be answer that for you! Great guys over there! -Toby
We need an updated version of this!
I’m working on it! I’ve probably got over double the number of libraries I had in this video now 🤯 -Toby

great video great amp
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Have you played through one of these? -Toby
Do you have any opinions on this? to me these sound Really good. Currently i use Drumforge Griener and Savior and i have to say these sound like a set up for that. how do these compare?
DF Greiner is pretty sick, but I think MDL Tone UHD is better! -Toby
in your opinion, do you prefer the trivium drums or josh mdl?
Ooooh that’s a tough one. I love how versatile MDL Tone UHD is but overall I think Bogren Trivium Drums has a sound I prefer. -Toby
I think it depends on what you're looking for. This is great for thrash/metalcore stuff.
@@benstanfill363 I think I’m just a sucker for a Jens produced snare haha, the snares in MDL don’t quite have the ping/pang that I love. -Toby
@@benstanfill363 true! Both drums sound great, but I can only afford one of them. They're too expensive for me in Brazil. Toby does an excellent job reviewing drums, so I trust his words hehehe
Nice demo! Don’t forget to name your tracks Toby! 😂 Also you were right about the Aston it sounds good 👌
Haha yeah this was a super quick and dirty demo for an upcoming @bloodypineapples song. So quick I didn’t name or colour code the tracks! 😂 Thanks for watching, Brian! -Toby
This kit sounds amazing. The toms specifically are exactly how I think of Trivium. So good @Bogren.Digital!
Yeah those toms are SOOO perfect! Bogren killed it once again! --Toby
Nice demonstration. 👍 It's not a drum question but I like the bass in the mix, it would be great to know what EQ setting you used, or if there is another plugin inserted besides the Trivium BassKnob. (I know ShinzBass, I assume you used the DI.)
Thanks! I literally just used shinz DI with Trivium BassKnob and nothing else. Just tweaked the gain on the the Bassknob to taste and called it a day! Thanks for watching! --Toby
@@AiiZStudio Great, thanks!
@@80s_kid no worries!! 👊🏻👊🏻
My bad! It was nocturnal bass!
@@AiiZStudio 👍 (The thing is that it sounded like a picked bass but I thought that I hear this because of the complete mix.😁)
6:31 a tip if you didnt know Settings midi out on ezdrummer/superior, then make whatever drum library you use so it uses midi in - ezdrummer. Now you can just play anything from Ezdrumer and the sound will trigger in the other library 😎 Just change mapping to ezdrummer in the other library 🥁
Oh yeah, I do that as well. That’s a good tip, and toontrack have step by step instructions on their website on how to do it in all major daws too! Thanks for watching! -Toby
Thank you for taking these for a spin, Toby. Grea to hear you are enjoying these :)

Hey , what preset did you use in krimh drums and how much did you process it if I may ask?
Hi! Thanks for watching! I didn’t use a preset, I just chose the drum pieces I wanted, exported as Multis and sent all the files over to our mixer Ruben. We haven’t done a mix walkthrough on this song, but we have on some of our other songs on the channel, where you can get an idea of the kind of processing Ruben does when mixing drums! 👍🏻 -Toby
I've tried most on your list. Tonex is my favorite at the moment. The 'amp captures' you get get for it are the most realistic I've heard thus far.
ToneX is pretty tasty, it’s still one I use a fair bit. Most times I do a reamp, i’ll also get a ToneX capture too! -Toby

@@AiiZStudio Ok cool thanks
Amazing amp I own one, shit video though
Haha thanks for watching 😂 -Toby
I would genuinely like to know how the video could be improved upon though if you have some actual feedback! 👍🏻 -Toby
I’ve been playing a Mode Four since it first released. And yes the M4 is simply misunderstood. There was a time when I couldn’t believe it got such a negative reputation, but eventually I came to understand that it’s haters literally don’t know how to harness its tone. It’s ridiculously powerful, loud, and has very aggressive distortion. Man do I love its distortion.
Yeah, I’ve been GASing for one for aaaaaaages, I’m so glad I finally have it! -Toby
Offer this for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest... PLEASE! My son loves this! Im going to get it in hope the company grows!
Hmmm now that would be interesting! -Toby
I enjoy the additional options in the open menu on the leadknob - its enough tweakability without being option paralysis.
Yeah definitely. I had a brain fart and neglected to cover that section 🤡 -Toby
That is amazing product from BD! Gonna grab them asap! Being a fan of Trivium since like 2008!
2008 was a great year for trivium, shogun came out then, which is my favourite album from them. Thanks for watching, and please consider using my affiliate link if you do grab these! -Toby
@@AiiZStudio Ok, I will! And yea - 2003-2008 - were the best era for metalcore bands. Truly great albums came out in that period of time.
@maxmolodtsov thanks! And yes, for sure! Killswitch, god forbid, bullet for my valentine, as I lay dying, Atreyu, a7x, all that remains. So many bangers! -Toby
@@AiiZStudio Yes!!!
Ive had one since 2004 and its outlasted both my JCM900 2500 SLX and JCM2000 DSL50 ( which are BOTH dead right now) lol. Its a tank, can do anything and is incredibly reliable. I DID blow it up after i first got it because the douchebag at the music shop who sold it to me, also sold it with 2 MF400B cabs. While the cabs are now considered legendary, you simply CANNOT use both in a full stack due to impedances. Well, dumbass 21 year old me didn't know that at the time and cranked it in a full stack only to murder my amplifier. 6 weeks later, it came back from the tech and they beefed it up for me. I only use it as a half stack now, but in the full 350w mode, though with the tweaks they did, it CAN run as a fullstack but i won't risk it. Favorite channels? All of them really, depending on how and what im playing. For the classic/hard rock sound, i like Channel 1 with the gain dialed up, getting that pushed Plexi sound. Channel 2 is fun for that old NWOBHM tone. Channel 3, i admittedly dont use too much. But Channel 4 is awesome IF you keep the scoop switch out, dial up the mids, tone matrix at 3 and push the presence and resonance up. You get this brutal gain but yet you can hear it cut through and not get lost in the muddiness. Takes on an almost overdrive boosted 6505 sound with more bottom end
Damn that’s mad! It really is an absolute tank of an amp, and I agree with all that you’re saying here! The scoop button is kinda hilarious tbh, but I guess it was perfect for nü metal back in the day haha. Thanks for watching!! -Toby

I got 3/5 correct! Lol Would’ve never guessed Pink Sabbath would be on the list. Also need to check out Fluff 2C for sure. Figured ML5 would be able to do what 2C does but it’d probably be worth experimenting to see what the differences are.
Pink sabbath is great. Pink handles the clean and sabbath gets your filth in on! I should probably do an extensive shootout of ml5 and fluff2c 🤔 -Toby
I was just talking to some recording buddies about just how much the recording landscape has changed since just 5-6 years ago. Guys like Neural DSP and ML Soundlab have really accelerated the way we look at amp sims and how guitars can be recorded nowadays.
Yeah man! It’s wild, I quite often look at my amp collection and think “do I reeaaaaaaally need these still?” I think I forgot to mention in this video that I just wrapped up production on an album that uses every single ML amp sim on it 😂 -Toby
