Stanton Bikes Switchback 4130 - Dream Build
I hope you guys enjoy this unashamed Gee Milner Dream Builds ripoff.
When I decided I was going to build my dream hardtail I wanted to document the meditative process with an equally meditative video.

I love watching people make things, and without knowing the craft it's so hard to look at the finished product and be able to imagine howe much work and skill has gone into making it. Which is why I made this video of my friends Rowsaan making this simple yet beautiful hook. Enjoy! MB01ACNZ55ZFR5E

Wow. It's been a long time... 2 years. This footage was taken on a trip back in 2016 and I had never got around to turning it into anything. And now I have. For me, being underwater feels like coming home. I wanted to capture something of that feeling with this video. FUN FACT - On a good day I can hold my breath for longer than the length of this video. Very nice
this was so well put....although i searched for the opposite and clicked this, then wondered "this doesn't seem right..."
Sorry I know nothing about bicycles, but why do that? Doesnt shifting give a big advantage?
"vintage"
@@klompex100 gears are great but the simplicity of a single speed bike and the efficiency is a different experience altogether. If you are riding on mostly flat terrain it’s awesome.
@@kendallmonk this makes sense! i see many people who talk about how great their old single speed bikes from the DDR (east Germany)are and I think about getting one aswell. Working on the derailer and things are a pain, now I’m thinking of converting one of my bikes to single speed aswell.
What are the sizes of the spacers on the hubs??
@@kousukesaki3965 no idea, I sold this bike years ago. You can buy them in single speed conversion kits.
Is it now a fixie?
@@susssnasssekee219 no, it’s still a freewheel hub so can coast.
Wouldn't it be preferable to have a down tube frame like some mountain bikes?
How does the weight of this repurposed freewheel compare to a single speed freewheel? Having a light rear end is one of the biggest benefits of single speeds. Plus the cost of a single speed freewheel should be much less than the value of the multispeed freewheel you are replacing.
That is a cassette though not a freewheel. So the racheting mech is inside the hub he is only changing the sprockets.
what do u call the thing that u put to make the cog elevated,? at 49 in the vid..

Can i make this a coaster hub?
first
I want to turn my e-bike into a single speed since I use only one speed anyway and I want to make it easier to clean my chain during the winter. But my question is, do you need a smaller crankset diameter or a bigger one if you want to make it so I can still pedal to give power when I'm going higher speeds?
If you want a higher gear so your legs arent spinning like crazy at high speeds you want a higher tooth chainring (larger diameter) at the crankset and a smaller cog at the rear.
Love the groovy music, the pause to hear the wheel go 'brrrr' and of course the informative content. Good one!
You installed a fixed cog so the cranks won't stop moving once your underway , what about if you want to fit a free wheel cog.
It IS a freewheel cog. It's installed on the old freewheel hub.
I'm a big fan of Rone's work. Ive seen videos of his work at the Alfred Nicholas Mansion and some silo art, along with an abandoned house on a construction site. All brilliantly done.
Yeah. Now how do you do this with a vertical drop in? Freewheel style. Gets much more complicated according to all of the bike shops I've called.
You can use a chain tensioner like this www.wiggle.com/au/p/dmr-simple-tension-seeker-and-single-speed-kit?gad=1&gclsrc=ds
What color is that frame? Is that the bronze?
It is the standard grey, which looks awesome. 👍
Amazing!
Cool Build 🤘🏼 , awesome bike on paper , How does it climb? And decend ? I feel this bike is a big BMX just great in bikeparks and free ride lines
Thanks legend! I would say climbing is ok, the seat angle isn't super steep and the chainstays are super short so you've gotta be a bit more aggressive to keep the front wheel down on the really steep stuff. Descending is phenomenal, incredible fun, playful and fast. Handles the rough stuff really well and is a blast on groomed jump lines. I am stoked on the build up, the only thing I am not sold on are the TRP brakes which feel like they should have more power for twin pots.
@@kendallmonk thank you for your reply Kendall really helpful, The bike looks amazing I have been also considering the 4130 for it being within my budget. even though my terrain isn’t as steep as this bike was built for, got mainly bikeparks and mini DH built trail runs My rides aren’t more than 3 hours long , just like wrecking through stuff and getting loose 😅 that’s why i like the idea of the Switchback. I just read that the bike is a bit boring on blue trails and flow , needs really steep drop to shine
@@thescandiflick no worries at all. I’m not sure the average rider would be able to tell the difference between the 4130 and Reynolds, certainly not riding it. This is a fun bike wherever you ride it. If you get bored on flow trails with this things there is something wrong with you, not the bike. I’m the same, my rides are generally short although I’ve done a couple of 4-5 hour rides without issue.
I bought the 4130 sherpa because it is the sweet spot fir price/quality. 538 may resell a bit better because of the brand “reynolds”. But don’t forget, both frames have the same reynolds rear triangle. So they are half identical 😉
this was very calming to watch, i wish i had the patience to build up a bike myself
I love simple videos like this, keep it up.
I gotta say the Pictures at the end (sometimes the music can enhance the image(s) if that makes sense)...were "Awesome". That is a Hardtail ready to "Rubber Side Down". Good job and well done.
Thanks Norman!
Hi...am I missing something here, I'm seeing Two different Cassettes @5:50 and @8:15. I do like the Stanton Frames, Steel and Ti. Was this Frame Built in the UK or Taiwan? Cheers.
I had a Sunrace 11-46t cassette but it didn't work with my existing XT derailleur so I had to swap back to my 11-42. The bike is now setup with the 11-46 and a new SLX derailleur.
This is the 4130 Cromo built in Taiwan. Cannot fault the quality, which is not surprising considering how good the Taiwanese are at building bikes.
@@kendallmonk...Thanks Kendall for replying to my above questions. Yes the 4130 looks super, I agree Taiwan produces some quality, for sure. As you know Stanton has a UK build price, also a Taiwan Build price. 11:14 that picture is quality...appeals to myself. I had to watch it again. Thanks on the sizing, I'll take that on board when ordering. Rubber Side Down. Cheers.
Nice! Just about to finish my Stanton Sherpa. Frame and finish/paintjob is amazing!
Can you give us a few details about the sizing? like how tall are you and what frame size did you choose? Are you happy with the size you have? There is not much out there on these switchbacks!
I went for the 18" Long and I am 6ft. I was thinking about going smaller but was recommended the larger size and I'm extremely happy I did. The bike feels very nimble and the standover height is awesome.
@@kendallmonk awesome thanks for the info!
@@kendallmonk...Hi, I'm 6 1in...did Stanton help with your sizing? I thought for a minute you were going with Microshift 10 speed when I seen your "First cassette". How are the welds on this Beautiful looking Bike? Are you really happy with quality from Stanton? I ask as I too will be looking into a Stanton Bike Build down the Track! Cheers.
@@norman-gregory I'm 6ft. I'd be going the 18" long for sure. Build quality is top notch.
hi whats that thing you used to put down head tube
It's the Granite Design Stash multi tool. Like the one-up components one but no need to tap your steerer. granite-design.com/products/stash-multitool
That's really impressive! Well done!
What it’s the nicest hardtail for the money 1200/2200
Loved it.
Cheers David
Genial pero ha faltado el peso 👍🏻

Love it! Keep the good work!
Thanks!
Really beautiful work. Just love the idea of renaming the hue for tonal reference. It's tricky the way acrylic dries a shade darker. Thanks
Absolutely unique 👍🙂❤️Awe some✅
Really great artist video, love the editing and the variety of close ups, wide shots and areal. Wish you lived closer to me to film my next mural :)
Thank you Tatyana 🙏 much appreciated.
Nice!
Thanks Jay ✌️
Why is Rone wearing a mask on the lift up there by himself? Lol
Because he wasn’t by himself. I was up there with him.
That looks nice.
Too many cuts and camera movements, I'm literally unable to follow his hand movements. That's sad, because I would've loved to see how he actually draws his murals. Sorry that I'm so negative.
That’s cool man... you can be negative if you want. The video was never intended as a tutorial, more an opportunity for the Artist to explain his process.
WOW! 🤯 This looks insane! You are a very talented artist. Thankyou for sharing this!
It’s amazing isn’t it! I am not the artist, just the film maker who had the opportunity to document RONE’s process.
Not gonna pull it off in 90 seconds when you don't know which way to use the chain whip
What’s a chain whip? 😜
Great job! Do you extra time to build another for me? Please let me know (fgalleno@gmail.com). Thanks. F.
Just today I thought about building a Stanton Slackline Ti with the red Bomber Forks. After seeing your bike I think ist will look great 👍🏻 Have fun with your bike👍🏻
That would look sick! I’m super happy with the red forks. It now has red pedals to match 👌
Whats the Color of your Frame called? Is it one of the standard colors?
Yeah it’s a standard colour - Shadow Grey. I’m sure the elite colours are amazing but the depth of the shadow is pretty damn good IMO.
This is super rad! Thanks for the info.
No worries Andrew, stoked you like it ✌️
nice! how much does it weigh?
Thanks legend. No idea what it weighs...it’s a burly steel bike with parts chosen for strength and value rather than weight. It’s no featherweight but it feels both light and nimble to ride while being super solid through the rough stuff.
What happened to the cassette?
Well spotted! The old XT derailleur I had did not work with the 11-46 cassette so I had to switch back to my old 11-42. I've since upgraded to a new 11spd SLX derailleur with the 11-46 and it's working perfectly.
@@kendallmonk Cool! I have an SLX M7000 11s rd on my 11-46 10s Sunrace cassette!
@@ambalee that is my exact combo, works perfectly.
appreciate the editing in this video. great job!
