I'm so glad I stopped using compound bow and went to a crossbow.
I saw some in South Dakota
im using the dead meat v2's for the first time, hope there just as good at the megas
@@Patriot4Merica great Broadhead. The penetration should be a little better with 1.5” versus 2” ……Especially on less than perfect shot placement.
😂 3" of penetration I have that same issue 😜
I started a 2 acrr no till plot this spring in June here in Iowa .Burned it all down with roundup and 24d. Drilled in summer release. It started to germinate in 3 days as there was plenty of moisture below the surface. And then of course no rain for 30 days and a week of 90 degree temps. It was growiing good especially the sorgum, but the water hemp took off as well and I was forced to spray it all in late july to keep the hemp from going to seed. Didn't see that coming was disappointed. Probably should have started with the fall blend instead of summer blend. Had I got some rain in june maybe it would of gotten a jump on the hemp,I'm not sure. Now of course all kinds of rain in July here in southern Iowa. So I will drill the fall release blend in middle of August. Will it have enough clovers and rye grain to suppress the weeds come spring. Do you have to put in the summer release. Can you just leave it all fall release through the summer to supress the weeds and drill more fall release in again in mid August of the next year. Enjoy your channel Thanks!
@@dougswinton3365 I had a similar situation happen this year. I had a slew of pigweed that came up. I ended up spraying pursuit to control it. Obviously I knew I was going to lose my forbs like the sunflowers, and grasses like my sorghum or milo. I ended up with a good stand of soybeans, cowpeas, Lablab, that I added and sunn hemp. It hit the pigweed pretty hard and I ended up with a pretty good food plot. to answer your question, I would plant your fall release this year and let it grow into June and if you want, I would plant some soybeans combined with whatever legumes will grow in your area. That way you can hit the hemp as it starts growing. You might even could’ve used a pre-emergent before you planted the legumes though I have never done that and don’t know if it would be practical. It’s hard to control those invasive forbs when you have such a diverse mix in summer release.. and you were very smart to get rid of that hemp this year so you don’t have the weed base. Mixes like summer release are the way to go, but sometimes you have to take a step back to ensure a good future in your plot.. good luck.
@@dougswinton3365 just in case I missed something here….I noticed in your comment that you used 24D at the beginning. Remember if you end up using 24d, you need to spray it 3 to 4 weeks before you plant. Several years ago, I sprayed it and didn’t wait. I had a really bad stunting of my legumes.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine Yes,I'm sorry,I did spray 2 weeks before planting. My plan was that the summer release would hold the weeds at bay,as I knew I would get some weeds. Germination was great but no rain for 4 weeks and ninety degree heat way early doomed Mt plan.
@@dougswinton3365 it was a good plan. The weather has to do its part.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine Thanks for the input. I think I will put the fall release in next week or so In hopes that with the clovers and rye grain in the mix it will not let the pig weed take off. Thought I would frost see ladino clover in March. I'm not really interested In feeding deer in the summer. Maybe a perennial like clover the way to go,something I can spray and mow, maintain easier and also a food source if the deer want it. I noticed on my farm where ever I have clover or seeded or rye grain there is no or very little pigweed.
I prefer making jam with them, but to each his own. Great video!
You didn't by chance go to Jenks High School did you?
I did not. I attended Cushing.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine I really enjoy your videos. I also plant Green cover seed and live in Oklahoma. keep up the good work!
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching. Oklahoma is an awesome place to live.
Thank you! What gear box drive setting 1,2 or 3? and what gate openiing number? Thank you
@markcharlton9020 Actually I don’t remember. I went off the seed chart that came with the drill. I looked up sunflowers and went off their setting for 30# per acre. I wish I could remember.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine no problem. thank you
What was your drill settings for the milpa seed? That is the same drill I rent from NRCS. Did you apply any fertilizer? How much and type? Thank you.
I used 100 lbs nitrogen. Set it for sunflowers on the chart, 1/4” to 1/2”. 6-8 lbs per pound. Thank you for watching.
I have that exact grain drill, cut into a 6 row configuration and custom 3pt frame with golf cart tires chain driven. You can buy these cheap and with some welding knowledge you can easily make a quality drill with the same quality as an expensive one for dirt cheap.
That's sounds awesome!!. I'm looking for one now to cut down. I'd like to keep this one for when I'm in a pinch for big jobs.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine have an email or phone number I can send some pictures of it. Maybe spark an idea for your own drill
@@vincentecherer6349 thanks. whitetailvideomag@gmail.com
I know this video is 3 years old or more but I had to comment about the cowpeas. They are one of the easiest, most economical and most nutrient rich things you can plant for your deer. Where I live in Western Carolina in the foothills and mountains (on the NS/SC Stateline) we can still get frost in May a lot of years. However, its has to be a really hard frost and several days of it to really hurt the cowpeas as long as there already a few inches tall. It’s just a gamble I take because I need them in the ground and up and growling good while the deer are putting on that mass and beam length in June. I plant cowpeas the first weekend in April and if the frost is bad enough or the deer mow them down to the point they don’t come back I replant again. I feel a lot of people don’t get their high quality protein food plots in early enough in the year for them to really benefit the bucks antler growth. In 25 years of trophy managing bucks I’ve found that keeping trace mineral blocks out year round, cowpeas in asap in the spring and regular ole buck forage oats thrown over top the cowpeas and disc in early fall has been the most simple and best ticket for me bar none (and I’ve planted about everything known to man for deer over the years). Cowpeas will really fix a lot of soils that are bad also. Another thing I love about cowpeas is they require very little fertilizer and on a lot of our plots that the soils in good shape I don’t even use any fertilizer👍
Love this feedback. Great lessons here. Like you said you can always replant. It’s important to get them nutrition early. When I can’t I usually put out whole soybeans or split black eyed peas. Thanks for the feedback.
GIVES HUNTING A BAD NAME. THIS IS NOT HUNTING ITS JUST KILLING
I’m not sure what you mean, but so there is no confusion. This is a totally free range hunt, certainly doesn’t give hunting a bad name.
Damn bro I see fencing Fenced is not free range. It’s farmed
Those are panels to keep hogs out(which doesn’t always work). Those panels are only 32” high. Deer come and go as they please. No high fences here.
Fence panels Auto Feeders Cameras I did my research…I see you have the skills. Try hunting public land and rely on your skill not big money on private hunting plots.
Once you plant with the no till drill do you make another pass with a crimper to lay down the existing vegetation?
Thats a world record or am i crazy
Looks like the old mega meat gives you about 6” of penetration. 😮
I don’t think it’s a bad head. But I think they’re are better options. Blades break fairly easy, not the best penetration, but big entrance hole.
I go with the Deadmeat, which has a great balance of cut/penetration. The shorter blades seem to be more sturdy as well.
Is this unroasted soybeans
Yes. Raw soybeans. I do use roasted.
Does the banks feeder stop raccoons?
The design really does deter raccones. to be most effective you need to sleeve that goes over the post.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine that’s what I meant! Does to sleeve stop them or just slow them down
I have had great success with the sleeve.
im curious how much damage after the arrow hit happened when the deer did his mule kick then smacking the arrow against that post. surely he was already dead but do you guys think the deers course of actions after being hit plays a factor?
That’s good question. The buck was definitely dead on his feet, but I think hitting that post did some additional damage.
A buddy of mine shot a Nilgai and didn’t get a full pass through. He had a 4 blade muzzy, and in the 700 yards that critter ran it smacked the arrow on all sorts of brush and trees. It was shocking how little damage that broadhead did when it was flopping around. It certainly wasn’t enough to be a game changer
Awesome that they are in Oklahoma!
No pass through?
No. I see that a lot with those large mechanical blades. Definitely a downfall. If you hit your mark though they do great damage.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine yeah but is it worth it sometimes
It looks like it stuck in the left leg judging by how it moved compared to the right when it jumped.
Mine passed threw on my dear with a mega meat
How far out were you
Great video! Ours wild plums were so abundant this year! I've made a quart of wp syrup, fermented a quart add now I'll make jelly with the rest, thank you! 😋
Thank you. That's a great idea.
Idk the penetration is pretty lame
I've been using our old Van Brunt 14-7 B drill to overseed fescue in our yard for years. Works fine. Just have to wait until the soil is moist enough to get the coulters in the ground. I mow high but the old drill still cuts through the fescue. Germination is high and the results are great. Thanks for the video. These old drills "just work" and there are a lot of them out there.
Thanks for sharing your experience. They are timeless machines.
Absolutely painted that post
Feel like that Arrow just glanced the elbow. Took the energy out of it but enough to penetrate the heart it seems
Very well could have. Thanks for watching.
As well as we can see on video, it looks like that's exactly what happened. Definitely not enough arrow sticking out to not have, at least from this perspective lol
im curious how much damage after the arrow hit happened when the deer did his mule kick then smacking the arrow against that post. surely he was already dead but do you guys think the deers course of actions after being hit plays a factor?
@@sketch7254 I feel like the broadhead being yanked around HAD to have had SOME impact, right??
Do they really shoot like a field point?
In years of shooting them, I have found they are similar in flight( as long as they don’t deploy). There is a big difference in flight between fix blade and mechanical. Honestly that’s why most people shoot with them. There are some drawbacks., but flight is not one.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazinethanks 👍🏼👍🏼
😎👍🍻
Your arrows are WAY too light. You should’ve blown straight through both sides at that range.
Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment. I would like to agree with you, but the truth is I’m shooting an Easton axis arrow which is one of the heaviest arrows on the market(full metal jacket is heavier and so are some others). I believe the lack of penetration is the size of the Broadhead. Expandable by nature, though they do get pass-throughs it’s not as common as with a fixed head, three-quarter or 1 inch blade. The mega meat is 2 inches wide. I’ve often had shots like this. The deer are usually recovered very quickly. At times I’d like to go back to the Muzzy Broadhead‘s I used to shoot were very rarely I did not have a pass-through. Thank you for watching.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazineSo it’s pretty bad penetration…
I've taken several with grim reaper hybrid. The largest one they make and have always gotten a pass through. However these seem to work well for you so keep it up 💪
It looks as it hit the inside of the left leg. Otherwise would have been a pass through easily
@WhitetailVideoMagazine put a hundred grain insert in your arrow, that will help with foc and penetration
I planted summer release last spring and it sprouted excellent, the deer ate majority of it down once it got going, I’m excited to try fall release in a month or so.
Awesome! good luck with your planting! Let me know how it goes.
I’ve been debating on getting some dead meats for my crossbow . I think this video just helped me make up my mind
You won’t be disappointed. Devastating.
I’m using green cover seed summer release now, my clay bulldozed hilltop was semi barren for years and I now have plants growing all over looking great, I am all for green cover seed
That's awesome. Great stuff. I wish you great success. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, I got one question - where can I get buy those cheap grain drill? I would really love to ship em to my country
Thank you. I found it at a farm auction. It is very difficult to find shipping out of the US.
This sounds a lot like green cover seed blends, I’m using their summer release now and a lot of what you mention is in their mix.
It definitely lead me to Green cover seed. For many years, I planted single species and stayed away from blends. After stumbling across Green cover I realized that blends would perform better in my climate. You found some good stuff indeed I wish you much success.
Just planted 20 acres of Green Cover Summer release as well as 4 acres of Game Bird mix
Wow. That’s tremendous. Your wildlife and soil are gonna love your efforts. I wish you much success. Thanks for watching.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine yea this too is our 2nd year planting this blend and we also used their fall blend last year. Works great if I can get it to lay down
Yea I have had some trouble with crimping it down too
I hear ya. Maybe someday I’ll invest in a solid crimper. Not thrilled with using chemicals, but it’s the best tool I have. There are many advantages to the crimper, but it’s expensive.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine We have a 8ft crimper but I still have issues with wheat and crimson clover staying down
Doesnt it need trellis?
Yes. Planted sorghum and okra with it.
What county are you in?
Jackson. Thanks for watching.
Is this your second year having lab lab failure?
No, it’s my first year but fingers crossed. I’m about to plant in another month and a half.
What size is this micro-plot?
Its an 1/8 of an acre. It runs long and narrow.
How did your garden turn out?
It started off promising, but temperatures were unseasonably high 107 one day. And over 100° for eight days straight with no rain for a month. We’ll be watching for rain this year and try it again. Thanks for watching.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine ouch nothing you can do about that, hopefully you guys have better growing conditions
@@Aaron-sl9lu that’s for sure. Hoping for better conditions.
I really wanted to plant this seed this year on our four half acre plots but $450 for shipping killed it.
I’m with you on that. There used to be a green cover shop here in Oklahoma. And that’s where I would buy my seed. I called green cover yesterday to see if there was a point where I could pick up. They do have drop points, which saves some, but the closest I found was MO, Which is about eight hours from me. The cost for shipping on everything is gone up tremendously since Covid, and it’s a really sad situation. Green cover is also added a new inoculant which is really supposed to help the seed take better care of the plant. I will probably end up using the seed that I bought and had in storage in a cool place from last year, then in the fall make a trip to Kansas, to their other facility, and buy it in bulk.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine Thanks for the feedback! I'm in Atoka county Oklahoma and am just starting the crimping method. I have researched what plants work well for this and will probably buy locally. Good luck with your plots!
@@redriveraerialphotography5780 awesome. Thank God for local coops. Good luck with your planting.
Redmond Agriculture makes (or mines) Trophy rock. It weighs roughly 12 to 20 pounds @ 14 dollars . They also produce mineral blocks for cattle that's 44 pounds . It has the exact same analysis as Trophy rock and costs about the same . More fun less . They also make a block that has Selenium at 30 ppm or 90 for the same price another with garlic for fly control and tick .
Thank you for info. Much appreciated. Good stuff indeed.
@@WhitetailVideoMagazine you're welcome.i I have selenium poor soil here in North Louisiana as well. I like Redmond brand because it's all natural and the deer love it . I have other animals that also use the sites as well .
