If American tourists don't act like arrogant jerks, they should do fine. In my experience as a Canadian traveller, people judge you on how you behave, respectfully an with a open mind. I sure don't see many US travellers off the beaten track, not even in Europe. I taught nursing students in Qatar for four years. They liked me because I liked them. They prayed 5 times a day but they knew I "wasnt religious" in their words. It didnt matter. It'd be a better world if more US Americans travelled.

You’d get outright defensive if someone dared and would more likely than not, not want to invite them back. Hint hint hint. Secondly, two americans had two utterly different experiences in Russia at around the same year. One couldn’t believe the hospitality, the other couldn’t believe the hostility. Key difference, one american didn’t talk down to Russians as if they’re beneath them, didn’t act like Russians are the enemy.
