Just had to look this up after hearing Jeff’s name dropped in Cher’s book. (She partied in his hotel room the night she broke up with Sonny).

Porcaro was definitly the groove master- The big question is how in hell did Sonny and Cher ever rise to fame? Sorry, i never got it from either one of them. Chers voice is like chalk on a chalkboard to me. Elsewhere greats were starving!

RIP Jeffrey and Michael Porcaro. ToTo is not a band without the Porcaro’s.

My wife and I first noticed drummer Jeff Porcaro on TV in late 1971, drumming for the "Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" studio band. We joked at the time that he looked like he belonged in The Partridge Family band. On Sunday March 19, 1972, we got to see Jeff drumming for Sonny & Cher at a concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana (when he was still just 17 years old). Two years later, on Sunday April 21, 1974, we're attending our first Steely Dan concert at the U. of Toledo, when we recognized Jeff as the 2nd drummer, alongside Jim Hodder. He said in the on-line Toto Encyclopedia that he took way less money to play for Steely Dan ($400. a week) than he was making with Sonny & Cher ($1500. a week), just for the opportunity to play with his favorite band at the time. He was so good on tour that Becker & Fagen made him the session drummer on their next album, 1975's "Katy Lied." That got him the gig later that same year as session and touring drummer on Boz Scaggs' Grammy-winning album, "Silk Degrees" (and all of this before the age of 22). We last saw Jeff in concert with his brothers Mike and Steve, when Toto played Salem, Oregon in 1985.

They were great friends - Toto tried to get Mike to join their band - watch the video for Ill Be Over You - Mike appears as if he IS in the band - that was their in joke. Steve Lukather played guitar on the single and the girl singing the chorus here... Mike's sisters Kathy and Maureen, no shit. :) Enjoy -

Jeff was the heart of Toto Lukather the soul.......still.such amazing music❤ I remember the debut album---- hit me like a ton of bricks! 45 yrs later nothing but love for these guys. Jeff is here in spirit.... his presence is deeply felt every day. Long live Toto!
