Bill's Bonsai
United Kingdom
Приєднався 26 лип 2023
Welcome to Bill's Bonsai, my UA-cam channel where I take young pre-bonsai tree stock through the process of growing and developing them to hopefully one day become an admirable, valuable bonsai.
I find working on my trees very relaxing. I also enjoy watching other people's videos for inspiration and relaxation.
I've had many bonsai over the years and like many people who venture into bonsai, have killed a lot of trees. I have a little more experience and knowledge now, but I'm by no means an expert. I've found that I enjoy the process of growing seedlings, saplings and young pre-bonsai trees to prepare them for their future as desirable bonsai.
Mistakes will be made along the way, no doubt about that. I do it for fun, relaxation, and seeing how the trees develop. Sometimes difficult decisions need to be made when pruning. Will I make the right choice or regret a decision?
Please subscribe as I would love you to join me, Bill, in my pre-bonsai and bonsai tree adventure!

Chinese Elm Cutting - Fish Tank Disaster - Root Rot | Propagation
Chinese Elm Cutting - Fish Tank Disaster - Root Rot | Propagation
These cuttings have been in the tank 2 calendar months to the day; 4th November 24 until 4th January 25.
I started spotting issues with them a week or so earlier and decided that it was time to get the out so I could find out what was going on.
I did put off taking them out of the tank earlier until I figured out what to put them in and where to keep them. Putting them straight outside when it was so cold didn't seem a good idea after growing them indoors.
After was looked to be a very promising and enjoyable project I was devastated to see the results - and I was shocked.
The cuttings were doing very well, but rot has started to set in!
Within a short period nice healthy cuttings suddenly wilted and began to rot!
There were no holes in the tank so I believe lack of drainage was the major issue. The tank was in a living room, and I was sure that it would need regular misting due to dry air. But the soil didn't dry as much as expected and it turned into a mush!
Lesson learned - I need drainage.
If I were to use the tank again I would either:
1: Drill holes for drainage and sit the tank in a tray.
2: Put an inch or so of pea gravel so any excess water can drip down into the gravel.
3: Combination of both!

New Hinoki Cypress Babies Get Potted Up | Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' I received 4 new Hinoki Cypress from a seller on eBay. They came in the usual 9cm pots. I decided to give them a new home for a year or two, so I potted the 4 of them up into a basket. I used a very basic mix of coconut coir, compost bark and some perlite. Enjoy the video.

Come nel giardinaggio , anche nella prima impostazione di una pianta a bonsai , non si dovrebbero vedere mutilazioni come in questo caso
I salute your fallen cuttings buddy. I always take Chinese Elm cuttings in August. They're still going strong on my windowsill in the sealed up Costa Coffee cups with small drainage holes and only water them at least once per week (until Spring). I didn't use any bonsai soil, just regular soil.
@BonsaiMaster300 Thank you. The survivors are sitting on my windowsill too, not in a Costa cup though. It was a fun experiment, and I'll use the tank again sometime, but with some changes to help with drainage. Cheers.
I would n't call that a failure by any means. But too much moisture thats for sure. Maybe next time use a large pot with some decent drainage and cover with a plastic bag.
@andrewclack4881 yes, it was all looking great until a week or so ago. A fun experiment with lessons learned. Cheers.
You could try again with soil that holds less water, maybe just sand.
@@mattb538 Thanks. I may use the tank again, but with some changes. Perhaps a pea gravel base, or in little individual cells. Cheers.
Well done Bill at least you given it a try not 100% successful but the one thing you have learned a better understanding well done you for showing the reality good luck with the successful ones buddy 🫶
@pauletheridge7594 Yes, lessons learned. Thanks for the kind words.
@@pauletheridge7594 Yes, lessons learnt. Thanks for the kind words.
Hi Bill, thanks for sharing your experience with these cuttings. You're right about the soggy soil causing the roots to rot away. It can be so tricky to try and manage in that container without drainage. You could try putting a few of those small pots, each with several cuttings, inside the aquarium, sitting on a little layer of gravel. That could prevent the cuttings from sitting in the soggy soil. I don't know if the aquarium is tall enough for all that, but maybe worth a try. Wish you all the best of luck with them, whatever you do..
@zachjohnson4472 I really like your idea of putting cuttings in pots, then placing the pots in the tank under the lights. Easier to manage. It may be a while before I need to use it again though. Thanks for the feedback and ideas. Very much appreciated.
good job. keep us updated
Thanks. Will do!
Happy New Year Bill.
@@mick681 Cheers!
Merry Christmas and Happy new year Bill to you and your family looking forward to seeing your projects 2025 I bought a label printer for my trees great bit of kit thanks to you Bill keep up the great work buddy 🫶
Thank you Paul. Good luck with the label printer. I'm very happy with mine too, and have now put all my notes into a Google Sheets spreadsheet. I also make sure to take a photo of any new plant I get for future reference. Cheers and Happy New Year!
Great tags. I've just bought a box of metal tags to put on my many starter trees. Glad to see your success with crab apple root cuttings, because I want to try that with mine.
Thanks and good luck with your crab apples 🍎
Merry Christmas Bill to you and your family. As well as a very happy New year 🎊 I hope that 2025 is good to you. I love the plans! Good luck to you mate 👍
Cheers Alex. I have far too many plans, but what I can get done I'll document.
Merry Christmas Bill! Hope you and your trees have a great new year!
Thanks, and you too.
My plan for 2025 is to start using this label maker for my trees.
Good luck. Hope you find it of use to you. Happy New Year.
Good tagging system Bill. I wish I'd done something similar but I was lazy and I honestly didn't think far ahead. I have my videos dated that are saved on the laptop under each playlist. But I had an issue a while ago and lost a lot of older videos from the laptop. Laptop issues. The videos are still on UA-cam but I have no access to the original if I ever want to go in and take anything from them and reedit for a future video.
Storage of the videos is an issue too. I've got a couple of external drives. Cheers.
Thanks and Hope you had a great Christmas and a very prosperous New Year...Sequim, WA...
Thank. All the best to you.
Hey cool! My neighbor has one of these in his yard and he gave me some apples to grow!
@BuffaloBonsai Nice! Good luck with them, and thanks for leaving a comment 👍
What you need to do is study, learn and then post videos on you tube on how to bonsai
@mybonsai100 I don't claim to be an expert nor set out to teach anyone. I'm simply documenting my journey and learning as I go, making mistakes and poor decisions along the way.
A great idea - I have found the big issue is the plastic sticks often crack and snap after a decent winter :)
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Thanks. I did try a fine permanent marker pen, but the ink still came off. Wooden ones rotted quickly too. You're right about the plastic of course, and I can always re-print a label when the plastic does starts to go. Cheers Xavier.
Thanks Bill. Very useful.
Appreciated. Thanks.
Brilliant tagging system. Sometimes I wish I had done something similar to keep track and document, but then I just tell myself a lot of my new smaller trees come and go, and those I had for a while I don't even recall when and where I got them anyway. Goal of bonsai is to make them seem old so the actual age is arbitrary. But it would be nice to know!
@@TalkingLoon Thanks. I was always having to search through old photos to find when I got my trees. Now I can see at a glance.
Whenever I decide to move my trees to a bigger pot I remove all the old soil/medium it was in...tease out all the roots to form a radial pattern...trim them if they're too long...fill the pot about 3/4 full...place the tree in the pot making sure the roots are all spread out...start to fill the pot...making sure the soil is around the new roots by poking a wee stick around to fill any wee gaps...repeat that till the pot is full...give it a really good watering...wait 2 mins...water again....put in more soil if watering has compacted it down. DONE. I have done what you mentioned in the past and will continue to do is completely submerge my trees in water, but I ONLY do that in summer. It works well for my Chinese Elm and Fukien Tea trees.
Yes, that's the classic way to repot a tree.
What kind of tree was the first one you submerged into the tub of water(blue rectangular pot)...Good information...Thanks for sharing...Sequim, Wa...
@n8tyler Hi from Edinburgh, UK. It's a Picea glauca - White Spruce.
Love it Bill ! Awesome progress and nice organised collection. I wish you success with seeds ! Keep us updated. Are you from Scotland ?
Thanks, and yes, Scotland. 🏴
😢 it’ll recover next year
@isaacsteinsgarden yes, I think so too. Cheers.
Since its fall this is probably normal sometimes Japanese maple leaves go brown rather than fall color /dry on the tree due to weather conditions it even happens on mature trees and all trees aren’t equal even if they are the same variety just leave it be it’ll be fine come next spring
@isaacsteinsgarden I'm afraid it's too late to leave it alone. I've hacked it already! 🪓
@ why?

I did the same last year. I have around a dozen seedlings to pot up this spring. Great video, thanks.
@@nickrobson2753 Nice!
A great video Bill. Very clever. Might just do that myself. Perhaps Father Christmas may bring me one of the printers.
@mick681 Cheers Mick.
Can you get bigger sized labels if needed?
If you're looking for a longer labels, this printer take a 15mm x 4 meter roll of continuous tape instead of 40mm long labels: amzn.to/4isZiba. It would be my choice if I needed one like that as it's also low cost and works pretty much the same way.
Cool system Bill! That label maker looks pretty decent. Thank you for sharing your set up
@@AlexBraunton You're welcome.
I think you have inspired me to finally label and track my trees.
Good luck Matt!
less than a month ago I got a 7ft Paul's Scarlet from the end of season sale at my local garden centre for £10! cant wait til the spring.
@andrewclack4881 Very nice! Just check if it has a graft scar. If so, I don't recommend cutting below it, if you're planning on a hard prune. Regardless, nice find! 👍
My maple leaves are coming out twisted and mutated. Any ideas?
@redearth8256 Thanks for the question. I suggest popping a photo of your tree into a bonsai Facebook group and ask there as there's no way of my knowing. I'm not an expert, just a hobbiest documenting my endeavours. Cheers.
In my experience Bill you should have some success with these seeds. That labelling gadget looks really good. What is it called and where did you get it?
@mick681 Thanks. The printer is from a company called Nelco. Bought it from Amazon. Less than £20. I'm going to do a video on it soon.
@ thanks Bill. That would be a great thing to do mate. 👍
Good luck bill
@@bonsaiexpression Thank you 😊
Nice one Bill, I hope they germinate for you!
Thanks Alex.
Peter is the true Bonsai Master, I've bought 5 trees from him. The first one which I still have is the Fukien Tea. Unfortunately, my Cotoneaster died. No idea why as they're supposed to be pretty hardy trees. Hopefully these seeds take for you.
I don't live near any bonsai nurseries. Perhaps one day I might get down to Herons for a visit. Cheers.
@billsbonsai as you know, I live in Glasgow, so they deliver them. Really well packed.
My Acer in the Bonsai pot is in a slightly different state. There's a few buds which should lay dormant for the next few months. A few of the leaves turned that beautiful deep red. There's still the old leaves from this year and you've just done what I'm going to do at the weekend - defoliate the whole thing. Looks like your Acer will survive...hopefully 👍🏻
Yes, I'm quietly confident that it will be okay. Fingers crossed. Cheers.
I think your maple is just fine..just in case keep it away from other acers...
@Maples-and-cats After investigating, I think it's fine too. Cheers.
I enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much. I certainly will try to keep up the good work. The cold days are holding me back a bit, though!
that looks like a great idea.
Thank you. It seems to be working so far. Cheers.
yeah the old katsura has some great character. I must have well over a 100 bonsai/pre- bonsai including many maples but know katsura!
I like the orange dream too. Quite similar in some ways. I think I want more of them! lol
Nice one Bill 💪 I always appreciate the effort you go to to do a good job, no matter how small it may be. I'd love to know your background, are you in the trade?
No, Alex, I don't have a trade, just a bit of a jack of all trades 😂 Thanks for the kind words. Very much appreciated. Cheers.
Great update Bill, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. No problems with me from the technical side. All seemed ok with the microphone. I love your biggest and oldest katsura. Did you buy that as garden centre stock or from a bonsai specific place? You've done a great job with it.
I honestly can't remember where I bought it but I can tell you it was either from a garden centre, supermarket or diy store and probably didn't cost me much at all, just like the others in this video. They usually arrive in the shops early May. You asked for an update video, so I made it with you in mind. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers.
I've only got 2 Acers. The one I keep in a Japanese pot is kept indoors and still had its leaves. The larger one which is about 18 inches is still in its pot and that's currently outside with no leaves. I've heard that if you cover the pots with bubble wrap, this will protect the roots and help stop the soil from going completly solid. I haven't tried it myself yet, but temps got down to about -5 in Glasgow, so I'll have to do it at some point. Cheers buddy 👍🏻
This year I built some boxes to keep them together and next to my house. I was thinking of filling the spaces between the pots with a load of coconut coir for extra protection. I've seen videos where nurseries take pots off their benches and put them onto the ground so the cold winds don't get underneath the pots, and keeping them huddled together also helps to protect them. Hope your Acers do well. Cheers.
I would definitely make a feature of the dead part of the Katsura. I would use some lime sulphur to whiten it up even though lime sulphur is seldom used on deciduous trees. The internodal length on acers must be kept as short as possible for ramification, as you are well aware.
White parts do look good on some trees. Not sure if you could make a jin on one of those 🤔
I've tried to tidy up the scar in the past hoping it would callus over, but that didn't happen. I suppose one either loves it or hates it. I agree with you about the internodal length. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing your challenges! This is how we all learn
@@cedarmyers6709 You're very welcome.
What I did with my Horse Chestnuts was... Get a big pot... Layer of soil then on top of that, lay about 10 chestnuts. Another layer of soil, then chestnuts and repeat. Leave it outside in a shaded area and cover the pot with mesh to stop cats, foxes and such. Leave it till late March. Carefully remove the chestnuts from the pot and hopefully you should have them sprouting. Hope this helps.
That's mine outside now, covered with mesh. Thanks.
Is this Aesculus hippocastanum youre talking about. Tray them up, 1 conker per 10cm pot free draining grow mix, barely covered then play in a cold frame. By early spring they should be up.
Yes, conkers. I've got 10cm pots ready. I'll transfer them when they've started sprouting in spring. Thanks.
