    Thanks for the videos. I just finished watching your 2nd and 3rd year updates. Really awesome progress on your part. 👍🏼I hope you do enjoy trying out the calligraphy. I consider 漢字 to be the coolest writing system on the planet. Even a single character can become a true work of art. The same can't quite be said about the letter "A" for instance. 🤣 There is a bit of technique to holding and using the 毛筆, and youtube can probably help with that. I wish you the best on your continued Japanese language practice.

    I just love that this is a realistic representation of what a normal learning progress looks like. Even though you put in quite a lot of work on a daily basis (which some might not even be able to do). Do you think you could've passed N1 if you focused more on reading during your immersion? Such as VNs, books,.. etc? Just curious. Oh and nice glow up btw.

    • @waldenperry
      @waldenperry 3 місяці тому

      @@L1ghTx i think a lot of it could be traced to not reading challenging enough content early on. I only started really reading novels in a serious way around 4-5 months before the test. Most of my hours were on low effort UA-cam videos where I didn’t need to get any better to enjoy them. (Now that I got better I realized how much context I was missing, but I still enjoy them the same)

    Are you going to start learning handwriting because of a particular interest in it?. Personally i wouldnt mind if i couldnt write my own name in front of other colleagues. The thing is, many people underestimate what it takes to become proficient in writing japanese by hand specially if you dont do it daily. I might learn to handwrite katakana and hiragana one day but thats just it.

    Nice video! I’ve been living in Japan since April of 2022 but started studying Japanese in November of 2018 with the goal of spending my winters in Japan henceforth which is exactly what I did until Feb 2020 when the pandemic hit, I had just left Tokyo for a business trip in Taiwan, and my return ticket to Tokyo got cancelled and the government then just closed the borders. During that time I went through a small bout of “depression” and maybe didn’t really properly study for I don’t even remember how long… maybe a year? Anyway , all I wanted to say is that in terms of progression, there ‘s a HUGE difference for me between learning JApanese outside of Japan, and learning while IN Japan. Living in Japan has allowed me to skyrocket. The environment makes such a huge difference! A year and a half ago, I actually couldn’t properly read or write. Now I’m able to read certain N3-N2 level texts, can play games in Japanese, read most typical restaurant menus, signs seen in day to day life. With all that said, the more I learn, the more I feel how little I know…

    I have been studying almost the exact amount of time, I won't go through my journey but just going to lay down some points about what I infer from your video. 1. I think its really awesome you make it clear you edited, corrected and worked on those videos with both mechanical and human corrections. I feel like too many people on UA-cam will just drop a video to show off their abilities and kind of leave people to assume "Oh I guess they are at that level". This is a huge positive in my opinion because I have the exact same experiences as far as being both proud of what I can do, but then uniquely aware of what I really, really cannot do. Haha. 1.a - Also I think its great you got corrections, that's how you learn! 2. I don't think its pathetic you can't write your name in Kana, I can't either, I can't write anything that isn't via keyboard in Japanese. That seems normal to me, its interesting you'll be looking into it, I personally won't. Just different goals. 3. As far as speaking, I've focused on speaking the past 6 months pretty hard core and I'm thinking of doubling down in my fourth year. It's impossible to tell, but it seems you're well ahead of me by comparison as far as reading and perhaps comprehension which is fantastic. I bet you will get very good at speaking very quickly. For me, since I won't be living in Japan I'm not too concerned about pitch accent, I just try my best. 4. A couple recommendations on speaking: If you can afford it, having a regular iTalki teacher JUST for speaking and getting soft corrections has helped me a ton in telling stories as well as form longer and more complex sentences. If you can swing it I highly recommend it. 5. On top of this, I've also started hopping on VRChat. You don't need a headset and rather its best that you don't because if you play in desktop view you can have a Jisho program up anytime you blank out on a word. There is a Language exchange for EN <> JP on there as well as more advanced, directly native Japanese only servers. I decided to get on one hour a night (when I can) and try to make a new Japanese friend with decent results. I eventually found some nice people that will put up with my sea of mistakes. Overall I want to say that I feel you 100 percent. I feel very strong in a lot of ways in speaking, but in many ways in speaking I do not. I feel strong in a lot of areas in reading, but definitely need a dictionary/Jisho for novels and hard mangas. It's a real weird mixed feeling of feeling both "advanced" and "beginner" at the same time. I think your comprehension is much higher then me, I think you'll have a great 2025.

    • @waldenperry
      @waldenperry 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comment! I feel like a ton of people on youtube are presenting unrealistic expectations, so that's why I wanted to be as honest with my process as possible here. I've actually done like 100 italki sessions over the last year and a half and that's where I learned all my speaking, glad your getting a lot out of that too. Calling my lack of handing study pathetic is 言い過ぎ I guess, because I'd never say that to someone else lol. I do wanna learn it though. As for VR chat that's actually on my list to check out. (You should look up the channel DALT, he's a japanese guy who goes on VR chat and it's hilarious). How did you find starting out there? I feel a little intimated signing up to be honest. It does seem more fun then hello talk, that place is kinda a mine show.

      I did my hours with a full time job too but I basically just sit in my room all day watching my japanese escapism content. It's pretty lonely tbh. I assume you don't actually want to leave your family to learn japanese, and that's probably a good thing, so best to find a way to be comfortable with your situation. By the way I'm jealous of the younger people who claim they do 8 hours a day which I can't do. All perspective
