My Michigan Tech: Jack Schaller
Jack Schaller originally wanted to be a zookeeper as a kid. As he grew older, he found his passion for chemistry while in high school. This led Jack down the path to Michigan Tech because of the rich culture and the unique climate. After he took a tour of the Materials Science and Engineering department, seeing the resources available to students and faculty, he knew that materials science and engineering was the degree that he wanted to pursue.
The availability of resources to students continued to enthrall Jack as he continued his MSE degree. Jack found that he loved how hands-on the MSE department was. With the on campus foundry, he found a love for casting metals into parts and using all the other facilities to refine products.
Jack’s love of the hands-on aspect of materials science is driving him to further his education at Michigan Tech with the accelerated Masters program. Where will your Michigan Tech degree take you? See what we have to offer and set up a campus visit.

How did you mold the fins? Are they resin gravity casted? Would they hold on a normal surfing day or are they just for R&D purposes. When I was in highschool I designed a similar experimento to test foils in a wind túnel. Cheers from Argentine Patagonia

When turning, first the ankle turns slightly (let's say to the right) prior to placement, and as the opposite leg swings forward, the ankle joint straightens, causing the body to turn to the right. With human physiology, other muscular maneuvers may occur (knee bends, increased leg separation, hip maneuvers, etc). And it's directed by the brain, largely w/o conscious thought (other than determining where you choose to walk to), based on (1) visual input (particularly in mountain climbing), (2) other sensory input (touch), (3) a database of prior walking/ climbing/ dancing (et al), and in the case of dancing, keeping to the beat (auditory input). Yes, this can be done with an artificial leg, but NEVER at this physiological level.

This is awesome! What a beautiful February day! I used to commute from downtown to the MEEM everyday 2006/2007. I loved the feeling of frozen snot on your lip! I need to send this to my friends and say, "look what you missed at your warm, populated schools!" Whenever I get Houghton-sick I'm watching this. Thanks a lot!
