How to write an Abstract of a Research Paper?
I never knew that this has a specific term. I thought that it was just because of the consequence of A type personalities always trying to grade and compare their own self-worth with others. I think it could be structural. The idea of academics is to pursue interesting topics in a field of study. However, systems like grading and curves artificially "grade" people in an artificial hierarchy, even when artificial hierarchies isn't needed for functioning modern society. When can the academic environment be structured around cooperation instead of competition? If academics could join forces and cooperate instead of tiptoe around avoiding plagiarism and competing with their peers, I'm betting more academics will have much more satisfaction out of their efforts and contribution to society.
This is extremely helpful. I learnt lots of new tips. Thanks Dr. Silvestri

Let me know if an elevator pitch was useful for your career!
At the end of the day, your application will be evaluated compared to the other applicants. For example, I have a master's GPA of 3.87 in a related major, an IELTS of 7, two publications, and worked on the structure of my SOP and CV for several months, but in the end, I got rejected from several universities such as UK.
This is inaccurate. Applications are reviewed independently. Acceptance into the program does not imply funding. Thus, programs can admit students just based on the quality of the application. We consider several aspects, as stated in the video, such as bachelor GPA and grades, the letters, the SoP, previous research experience, etc. Having published two papers does not mean much, if the quality of the publication venue is low.
Thanks a lot ❤
Thank you for watching. I hope it's useful. Feel free to share with other graduate applicants.

Nice! I was fortunate enough to win the Career in my first attempt. It did very positively change the trajectory of my career. These are all great tips that I agree on, especially: Don't neglect the the educational plan or assign it five lines as a afterthought. Do read funded proposals, if possible with their panel reviews. Finally, some people feel that a career proposal win is both necessary and sufficient for tenure. Neither is the case. Many successful profs did not win it, but went on to have amazing careers. Don't stress too much ;-)
Thank you very much for sharing your experience and suggestions!

much needed and much underrated video for prospective students. Thank you very much for the kind words, I am glad you find the video useful. Please share it within your professional network!
'you should not see this as end of the world' this is the true gist of this video.
That is correct. With an honest assessment of the paper and hard work, the paper can improve and eventually be accepted in the right venue.
Shortly, no.
Yes, not yet at least.
Hi there, I visited your UA-cam channel and I saw that SEO is not done in your videos because of which your UA-cam channel is not growing. The way to solve this problem is UA-cam SEO. Doing SEO on UA-cam will increase your video views, likes and shares very quickly. Your channel will grow very fast and your channel will rank in UA-cam search results. Do you want to discuss this with me?
Not interested.
Thank you so much for your detailed explanations. I have a question regarding peer review. Recently, one of my papers got accepted, but! one of the referees left comments on using some specific words by saying these types of words should not be used but me and my team don't feel like making changes. So, what is your opinion regarding this? Should, we follow the referee or stand by my decision?
Thank you for your comment. I would suggest to see if the Editor left any comment. If the Editor suggested to address the minor comments of the reviewer, then I would do it. Otherwise, there should be no problem ignoring those comments. Congrats on the accepted paper!
@@csmentor5482 Dr. Thank you so much for your valuable feedback.
Many thanks, your channel had been very helpful for doing research writing I am just wondering what do you mean by venue?
The venue is the conference or journal where you submit/publish your paper. I am glad to hear the content is useful, please share it!
Sir, Your videos are very helpful for research. Could you make a video on how to write a project and its pre requisites?
How to write a project highly depends on where you are planning to submit it. Could you be more specific?

Besides IEEE, Google Scholar, and ACM, how can I insert or use references that come from online sites, like TechTarget, IBM, Salesforce, Code42, CISA, etc.....?
I assume you are referring to Latex citations. In that case, you can use the following: @misc{yourcitation, title = {Title of the Citation}, howpublished = {\url{URL of the citation}}, note = {Accessed: date you accessed it}, year = {publication date} } Thanks for your question!

"promo sm" 😣
I am not sure I understand your comment.
Simone: Excellent presentation. I have two comments: 1) Yet one more possible research-oriented career path (in addition to postdoc and researcher in academia) is researcher in a research lab (e.g., national lab or research lab of a company such as IBM, etc.). In that case, perhaps the teaching aspect is less important; teaching will not be part of the job on a daily basis. 2) Regarding the teaching-oriented career path: In this case, increasingly, scholarly work on science/engineering education is important. So, in addition to the usual research papers, a PhD student may want to look into research on education approaches.
Thank you very much, Cris. I agree with you on both points. Thank you very much for the comment!
Many thanks for the insightful videos, i found your channel engaging and fastinating. I love the contents you upload.

Very nice. Ten years ago, I interviewed many of the top authors in data mining, and asked "why do you reject papers". I placed the top ten at the end of this tutorial, starting with slide 162. www.cs.ucr.edu/~eamonn/public/SDM_How_to_do_Research_Keogh.pdf
Thank you very much. Your tutorial may give some ideas for future videos as well!

Any genera tips for writing? How does one ensure good flow, sentence structure, and so on?
Unfortunately, there is no secret recipe. A suggestion is definitely to go over and over each sentence individually, and then each paragraph, then on the entire section, and finally on the entire paper. I also suggest to take a break (1-2 days) after the paper is complete, and the read/edit it from the beginning. However, the quality of writing improves over time by practicing (writing a lot!) and getting feedback. Some universities have writing centers that can help providing editorial feedback. Ideally, you learn a little from each paper, and eventually improve. Tools like ChatGPT can help re-write paragraphs, but you really need to be careful that they are not changing the meaning of what you are saying. Additionally, you would not learn much.
@csmentor5482 Thank you, yes I am busy with the final touches of my masters dissertation before sending it off for language editing offered by my university. Thanks for your help!

GREAT!👌
Thank you Prof!
Simone, you won't believe me, but I'm still using your template you gave me many years ago! 😅
I guess it's a good sign that it is useful! 🙂
You are using it in a wrong way, and expected a right outcome!
How would you have suggested to use it in this case? My objective is to show that simple uses like this one, which many may be encouraged to do, may lead to results that are incorrect, and difficult to detect.
well described, i agree based on my experience
IMHO best usage for cases like this, is to ask for suggestions / criticisms / proofreading, then filter it through your own brain. The thing isn’t reliable enough to replace your brain. The text is absolutely distinguishable, because it’s riddled with errors and filler words and clichés
I agree, however not everyone will be using it ethically. We need rules to define the boundaries of what can and cannot be done, and guide editors, reviewers, and TPC chairs.
Thank you for the video. I hope it is an eye opener for many of us. I also used it to obtain some references / citations for a topic that I was not very familiar with and I just wanted to read some relevant papers. In fact none of the 5 citation that ChatGPT gave me actually existed.
Thank, Anastasius. I am concerned about several potential side effects of using this technology. Some that came to mind are: - Students do not read as many papers and just rely on AI - Students do not develop critical thinking which is fundamental for advancing science - Non-existing citations might fell into the cracks and end up in published papers. Reviewers will not check citation by citation and advisors will not check their students' paper that carefully. - There will be (and there is) a general sense of trust for a technology that has a natural tendency to create information that is potential false.
Same happened to me.
Please let me know your opinion and experience in using AI assisted technology to write scientific papers. Thank you for watching!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing it! Just to double check then, writing a paragraph or a section, for example, and asking the chatgpt to rewrite it on more academic standards will not cause any issues as far as I mention that we used chatgpt for this at the end right? I am pretty sure this is fine since it is only improving language instead of writing any "new" actual information.
Luca, thank you for your question. For the current rules, you should declare that you have used ChatGPT for editing purposes only. I do not think this would cause issues in the review process. However, I warn you to double check the text produced, as some of the meaning may be lost/altered.
Perhaps the onus of preserving blindness for their part is on reviewers: I cannot believe that reviewers cannot find a published paper that shares 70% of the content with the paper they are reviewing. This also leads to the question on how/whether reviewers should check against double submissions or already published results (possibly by others) in a double blind process...
This is an interesting angle. In general, reviewers should not investigate to find out who are the authors, but a double blind manuscript should also not reveal the identity. The problem here is that if we disclosed somewhere "this paper is a extension of the paper XXX", we would have violated the double blind policy.
@@csmentor5482 Understood - and I think that your idea of separating paper from declarations is a good one. But was commenting on the difficulties in general in being a double-blind reviewer, for instance when considering originality... it is rather unavoidable to "intercept" earlier papers of the same authors...
@@andbra5713 your comment actually inspired me to fine a different solution, that is probably better than the one that I propose in the video. I could have anonymized the conference version, remove title, authors, venue, etc. Then mention in the cover letter that there was a conference version and make it available to the reviewers. However, the submitted anonymized manuscript alone would have not been enough for the reviewers to determine who we were, and they are not supposed to search online to find out. Thank you for your insightful comment!
You spoke my thoughts. Was waiting for this. This is very useful. Thank you ❤
Thank you very much! I am glad it is useful.
Thanks! If you provide to ChatGPT the Introduction of the paper and not just the title and the topic, the quality of the abstract provided by ChatGPT is much better.
Thank you, Antonio! I have not tried that, and it is actually an interesting experiment to see how the quality of the abstract improves. Thank you for your comment and for watching!
