We Found Metal in the Oil | 602 Teardown Part 1
After PB had to pull off the track in the last race with the late model with some engine issues, we started to inspect the engine. What we found is not what you want to see. As soon as PB unscrewed the oil drain plug we immediately found metal. Stay tuned to watch as we manage our way through this new task for us.

This race at Needmore with the 602 dirt late model did not go to plan, we went out to fix some problems we have had, but we may have made it worse! After starting towards the middle of the pack, PB in the 9H, 28 Special started falling back in the pack. Our 2024 season opener at Dixie Speedway did not go as planned. This was Connor's first time racing at Dixie and the Stinger field did not get hot laps. Not knowing what to expect and a lot of oil laid on the track throughout the night made for some new situations that Connor had to learn. At the end of our first race, PB had to pull off due to some issues. And the whole night we were struggling to find pace. We got the car back to the farm and talked with some people about our issues. Bearings or cam lobe metal most likely . Both would explain power loss. .
Yeah a lot of people have mentioned bearings. I guess we will find out when we send it off.

Sorry to hear that the engine issues will sideline you for a while. It's been a year since my son bought his 602 Late Model and with the season winding down, he has only been able to race it twice. We are learning as we go and what may take an experienced racer a few days to make any fixes or repairs, it takes us rookies a few weeks. We have definitely grown our knowledge and our tool supply along the way. Seems like everything that goes wrong needs some special tool to fix. I don't know if you guys have experienced that too. As always, I enjoy your videos and thanks for sharing your journey.
These things happen with these engines, since they run at higher RPMs. Glad y’all have gotten out on the track some. As of the time and tools it takes for repairs, we totally agree. But as long as you enjoy the process of learning I don’t think it is too bad.

Wow! You guys have had a busy 5 years. I'm glad you're documenting your journey for us to follow along but more importantly, for you to look back on years from now and show it to your children and grandchildren. All I have from my racing days back in the late 80's are a few photos taken with a poor camera. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to following your next 5.
Thanks for joining us on the journey! Sometimes it feels like it hasn’t been busy enough, but we still have plenty more to do. And sometimes those old photos are the best ones. I love seeing my dad’s old photos and videos and seeing how racing was before it got a lot more technological like our cars today.

You guys still running the late model?
We still have the late model, but after its last race it needs some engine work done. So right now we are working on that and not racing it particularly. We are not sure when it will be back on track right now.

Job well done! Running all the laps and being able to load it on the trailer intact is the main goal. Can't work on speed if you're always having to fix broke stuff. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing the videos.

Thank you! 🙏🏻 We are very glad to hear that! We have some work to do on the 602 to get it back running right, so don’t give up hope on us. It will race again. But in the meantime we will be racing our FWD cars this weekend though, so stayed tuned for that!
Replace the power valve in the carb, the popping in the corners is a tell tale sign.

It’s very very important in 602 and 604 crates to change the valve springs regularly. Not sure if you do . But if the car got slower and slower, I’d definitely be worried about a problem in the crank area .
Sounds like your running lean , that would cause the flames like that , as far as the oil pressure drop you need to drop the oil pan and look at the crank
Have you guys looked into rear end gear ratios, a taller ratio will give more torque out of corner and higher top end by the end of the straight.
The gear ratio is the same one many use. We are just down on power for some reason. Especially towards the end of the race. You see the car ahead just start gapping is and the car gets very quiet.
Was the engine new when yall bought it, also you might want to get new tires for it them tires don’t last for ever
It was not. It was supposed to be very lightly used but the motor was not run by the person I bought it and the car from. I don't know how long anything was refurbished on it but it definitely is our biggest issue. And the tires especially the RR I think finally gave up this race because the track was so much drier than normally what we run on
Also the oil system could be bad we had that problem with are car you should check that as well you, should do some research on that
Trying to diagnose the issues in racing is difficult because you have to wait until the following race weekend to see if your adjustments worked. On the bright side, the qualifying effort was good and PB is getting more comfortable driving the car and it shows. You guys will get it figured out and be able to put a full night of racing in. Thanks. I certainly do feel more comfortable. And I feel balance is almost where I need it for what I think I need. The motor is just our biggest issue for sure. Looking forward to one night of full power eventually

Radiator shroud is very important on a late model
Check your spark plugs and see how they look
The most important thing you guys need is a machanic that now how to work on late model dirt cars

I'll give you young men some advice, make sure you use good racing oil and not off the shelf oil , I use Brad Penn 20 50 racing oil,

What a great accomplishment. You guys are improving with every race. Seat time and being able to complete all of the laps is the goal. My son got his first laps in his 602 this weekend at a private practice and now we take the next step of seeing how he does around other cars. Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching your progress.

Drive needs To go play in an old pick up truck, in a field doing donuts, and learn how to come out of the Donuts in the field somewhere ,out here-dry lake bed then you will find the point of loss grip ,and the sets the beanch mark,ok thanks BigAl California ❤
We haven’t done that exactly, but PB has been doing some spirited driving around the farm to get more feel for the car. The dry lake beds seem like fun!
What is up with dark circles around your eyes, in the intro,,are you ok ,or tired, do you need help,need to stay up on the view’s on your vlog,if you watch ,you will see your self, p.s.on-the driving a 602 latemodals floor it to the turn ,,,stab the brake and. Rich kids and grandpa who wants to hand them everything. Might l suggest that you send them to a Vo Tech somewhere so that they learn something about cars and engines.
Sadly I'm not a rich kid nor come from a rich family. I have worked for everything I have. Not to mention I don't have a grandfather alive sir. So I have to learn everything on my own. And this only fuels me more to go out and chase that first win in this car to prove to people like yourself that just because someone is young and works on their own stuff that they too can win and compete eventually. I'd advise you to get your facts right next time
The biggest tire actually goes on the left rear, funny as it looks it will handle better. I know RF tire and camber looks good. Take my word for it is a 50 footer from the stands. But it will handle way better.
Contrary to natural instinct never correct to fast. You may overcorrect and let the car get away to the point you cannot bring it back. At that point we are along for the ride. Keep it smooth and good luck.
Thank you! And yeah, lesson definitely learned. Honestly, I knew not to turn towards the wall, but in the heat of the moment the natural instinct kicked in and it was too late. On the bright side I found a flaw that I can work on and pay attention to and keep getting better.

Hey, you have left a series of negative comments on the videos, and that is perfectly fine. It is good to get a mix of people enjoying and not enjoying the content, so we can improve. I am sorry that you feel this way. We are very blessed to have what we have and have always worked hard to achieve where we are in motorsport. While we are more blessed than a lot of people in the world, I don't think we have "too much" money. We have worked very hard to afford the cars we have acquired. In terms of skill and brains, everyday in life we learn something new. Here on the channel we like to be as open as we can about what we do wrong, where we can improve, and also our good times. Like, our 4 wins in the Neon at Black Horse vs our first races ever for each driver where we definitely didn't know a lot. It is a process. People like Mr. Roger Penske didn't wake up and just know everything about business and racing. He worked towards it over many years. There were ups and downs and the same goes for us. We are just in the developing stages of it all.

That is fine. I (Connor) kind of know that I am not a mechanic. But I am out here trying and learning. A lot of people don't get the opportunity to do this and just get to dream about getting to work on any sort of racecar, so I am blessed to be able to have worked for what we have and get to learn like I do. Not really any need to. The goal was to kind of keep it between a certain RPM. Even when we raced at Black Horse (1/4 mile) at nearly we still use 2nd gear.
