I'm so accustomed to working with DC circuits that I often forget how versatile the relationships represented by Ohm's law really are for problem solving. Nice of the universe to make it so.
It's amazing except for the background music. Please please don't put background music in future videos... I love your content. Fabulous
Great explanation, very helpful for Electrician Phase 2 understanding. Thank you
Hi Craig, on the am2 now we have to do a phase sequence test at the supply side of the main breaker at what point does this enter the testing sequence? Also you have to do a Zs test on the ring final circuit and calculate the rest of the circuits. Do you have to have the board cover on at that point? So would that come just before the rcd testing then as the board cover needs to be on for that test too?
Hi correction at 49.03mins. 1.37- 018=1.19Ohms
Thanks from Bangladesh.
UA-cam know every thing!! hahah
Would this work with an led light?
These videos are so good, please keep them coming matey
Watching all of your videos about design and calculation, very useful and informative videos. I'm going through my AM2 exam and can't quite find the answer that I need. What an impact does overload current that need to be calculated and set on D.O.L motor have on 3 phase MCB for that motor? If you have or can do little video on this matter will be great.Cheers.
Brilliant video.Watching over and over again , thank you. Can you do video on TT system, additional protection, testing.💪🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've just found your channel Craig and its such a relief as my AM2 B part resit is coming in a month time. I didn't have an issue with testing, although had a brain freeze /overthinking on insulation resistance test, still fail a rectification of the protective device (3 phase) as couldn't remember formula and way how to proceed to verify ADC is suitable for installation. I found your video on design/calculation of a circuit - 3 phase motor (6kW) and its was a massive help. Thank you for an educational video👏🏻💪🏻
Finally you used 7 nano instead of 7 micro. Why? I don't understand brother
He did not write N, he wrote U that's for micro
Hello, If I have to tap and or wiggle the bulbs for them to turn on, what's the problem ?
what's the name of the book ?
BS 7671. Sometimes I use this shop.theiet.org/electrical-installation-design-guide-5th-edition
Much appreciated, thanks Craig
Welcome, Just note the model forms have changed slightly in design but the boxes mean the same thing.
40 years in the field and needed a refresher to fix a light, your video was spot just what i needed.
There’s a sneaky little drum n base tune that plays during your tutorial, could you let me know what it is.. I’ve tried to Shazam it but it’s not finding it.. Awesome dnb tune and tutorial by the way..
I think it's a mates track.... Il check..... Think he is with Congo natty label? Will check it out.
Great documentary; really enjoyed it and the production levels that went into it are appreciated. For our level 3 design project I calculated a ring final circuit based on cable length, but my calculations revealed it required 4mm2 cable (method B installation if I recall right), However, I was told because it comes within the rules of a standard circuit of serving less than 100m2 floor area Table H2.1, this doesn't apply and I can ignore those rules and use 2.5mm cable regardless. Is that correct?
Thanks mate, wanted to try and keep it interesting.
@@cestemshow Sorry for the lengthy question, but is that correct? Surely there has to be a limit to how long a ring final A1 circuit can be, because even if it serves an area less than 100m2 floor area, at some point if the cable is too long the R1 + R2 will be too high and so will the voltage drop?
There are always limitations yes. You need to select the standard circuit whilst understanding all the assumptions attached in the notes surrounding them. The full design procedure of applying cable factors will always yield more onerous but perhaps more long lasting results.
How many fluorescent lights actually have a capacitor ? Where is it located in the light
Most older ones. Modern ones have a hf unit all enclosed. If they have one they connect it across the supply terminals.
Most of them will. They’re usually connected across the Active and Neutral of the terminal block. Older capacitors will have what’s called PCB’s inside which is carcinogenic so be careful
A 3 phase motor can be wired in star or delta. Does this affect the power ? Does it affect cable sizing. Please advise
Yes it does effect Power. Star is approx 1/3 of Delta. We start in star to build up speed then switch over to delta. Think of a car starting in 1st gear then switching to 2nd gear.
3 circuits in conduit. What does this mean exactly. Are we looking at supplies to 3 motors. That would be 3 phase and earth times 3 (12 single core cables) ? Are they single core or multicore cables ? Please explain
3 circuits means single or 3 phase or a mix. There is guidance shop.theiet.org/electrical-installation-design-guide-5th-edition on how to calculate these for various scenarios page 51 onwards but i usually stick to simple circuits in these videos. It would be 3 similarly loaded circuits. If a circuit is only carrying a small amount of current it can be ignored. Guidance value is around 33% of its capacity in the installation conditions.
Learning how to use my calculator watching this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, Why didn't you divide by the 1000. Zs= 0.35 + (19.5m.ohm/m × 50m × 1.2)/1000 = 0.35117 Ohm. The If = 230V / 0.35117 = 654.953 A. But we would calculate the Total earth fault Loop impedance is the sum of : 1. The impedance offered by the line conductor R1 2. The impedance offered by the CPC conductor R2 R2= 1.67 X R1 R1 = (0.2221 x 50)/ 2.5 = 0.4442 Ohm R2 = 1.67 X 0.4442 = 0.742 Ohm. Zs= 0.35 + 0.4442 + 0.742 = 1.54 Ohm. Then the If = 230V / 1.54 = 149.4 A. I don't know which is correct?
AC RLC theory
Thank you so much mate! How can we tell if the pf is leading or lagging with both reactive elements in the circuit? Also does it matter if the capacitor is after the inductor in series? and does the capacitor usually go in parallel?
You would need to draw a phasor diagram with current as the x axis as this is the ref point in a series circuit. It is the same everywhere and then the angle and knowledge of whether the current would lead or lag the voltage will indicate which direction from the x axis it is going by the angle. I think ive done a video on drawing these???? Not sure :-)
When determining the time side of the equation you should also consider that in a 3phase circuit a live to live fault can occur & therefore the voltage for your fault current calculation must be 400v for a line to line voltage between phases.
With regards to Cg, grouping is a lot more nuanced & is full of pitfalls for design such as notes 8 + 9. Note 8 significantly changing the current rating choice depending on temperature of cables in the group.
Love it mate, that CPC sizing part had me vexxed though. damn!
This video literally, saved me, did not get it untill this. Keep it up man subscribed
this is so educational craig even for a fifa nerd like me 🤣🤣🤦♂️ thanks for this video i loved it
thanks for this video, it is very helpfull for me to understand it
Just perfection
If everything goes to chaos ...how then... Life got spontaneously organised from nothing ... just primordial sup of organic elements ... instead of going the other way arround ... into more Chaos ???
Thenks to the "Made in CHINA" phylosofy. ... - we don't need to know anything - just go and by entire new unit and screw it onto the wall. Lol... I am just fixing bunch of thise thrown out. Freebies. Lol... Nice math lesson... Makes me thinking of Pitagoras from SAMOS. He created first comunist utopian colony... but that is for another video.
Do you have a bank account in a community bank ?
Hi mate whats the regs with the c.u being supplied by the 16mm twin and earth, should it not be rcd protected because its twin and earth Also Do they have to run the seperate main earth because the gas and water bonding coming off the c.u, and the twin and earth cpc would not be large enough
It's certainly a consideration regarding rcd protection of the supply cable in domestic properties and also the physics of bonding requirements. In this case the flats cu was directly below the main intake (2.5m of cable) so when applying the adiabatic it was fine regarding size of submain cpc. Also the bonding requirements are there to reduce touch voltages so it's about "within the flat" the point of entry of the metallic utilities needs bonding to the met of the flat in any case. If a flat was 15 storeys high and bonded from intake met to flat then during a fault condition inside the flat on say the shower circuit, would result in less reduction of touch voltage due to the increase of bonding conductor resistance. We need to assume the resistance of any bonding conductor is effectively zero then any touch voltage can be calculated by using 230/Zs of faulty circuit x R2 =Ut It would be better connected to the met of the flat cu so we can assume a good reduction. In this case again, it was done both! 😂 Both water and gas were bonded from the main intake and also from the flat. Chapter 54 of BS 7671 is everything earthing. For earthing conductors it's either adiabatic or table 54.7 and for bonding conductors it's either "not less than half the csa of the earthing conductor" or table 54.8 if pme exists (reg 544.1.1 currently page 205)
Excellent! Just what I was looking for, many thanks for a clear no nonsense video.
Thank you 🙏
Do you have to disconnect the earth fly lead from an rcbo from the earth bar when your doing insulation resistance on that circuit?
Yes. And I'd also remove the conductors from the rcbo and place in connectors for the test. Some rcbo can be switched off and not need removal of conductors but if your not sure then remove. But always keep the cpc in the met!
Wonder how many electricians actuallly wire a ring final correctly? Brings back memories of sitting in the 2396 classroom
Thanks for a great video, a lot of useful information!
Could you do a video on motor calculation with locked rotor current and explain what this is also? Thanks
some would describe that as in rush current. happens during the first few moments of starting the motor. Once the magnetic fields and resistance has been established through heat the current drops to lower levels.
Great vid - deserves more views !!!
Much appreciated!
Lol, Listening to that long steady tone at the end still puts me on tender hooks like it isn't going to load!
Can you imagine youngsters today putting up with this on their PS or XBOX? They don't know they are born!!
Jesus, this is definitely a blast from the past.. By far the most annoying piece is when you go through all of that and it doesn't load due to the incorrect volume setting or a dodgy lead. You could spend more time loading than you would playing the game!
You are funny...I don't know if it was your intention 😅.
Hi Craig, is there a easy way to remember the type of wiring and reference method?
Never been taught so well! thanks
Our pleasure!
another amazing video. Brilliant teacher!!!
Glad you think so!
Amazing video, thanks!!!!
My pleasure!
