Conservation Learning Centre Agriculture Research Farm
Hello. What type of ground cover is working best? Thanks!
Have you began pruning? If so, are there any results on best method?
Would anyone happen to know about the fall foliage color?
Really well presented. Learned so much from you in a concise form minus the drama
Did I understand right that every row was treated in a different way?
Larissa isa Polish variety Wojtek, Sveta is my very old variety. 2013. BerriesUnlimited. Russian origin. L. caerulea venulosa.
Thank You! Evie is a Polish Variety "Jolanta". Blue Diamond, Happy Giant, Jewel Blue , Blue Moose are very old TM USA varieties from BerriesUnlimited, AR, USA. They have Russian origin ( L. caerulea venulosa ) but they were released in the US in 2013. Strawberry Sensation, Blue Treasure, Giant's Heart- TM USA BerriesUnlimited varieties. They have Japanese Origin. Wild ancestor is L. caerulea emphyllocalyx. Blue Banana is old variety , it has brix 22-24 it is also a release of BerriesUnlimited. TradeMarked. Release of 2014. It has Russian origin. HoneyBee is a very good variety. Especially it is perfect for Jam/jelly. It is is also very very good for fresh eating for those ones who loves native honeyberry taste.. It is strong enough to grow in zone 7 in Mid west , the US. Honeyberries start developing their fruits in the buds during previous summer. It it is too hot and no water then next crop is miserable naturally. They are all from Misty/ Foggie areas and they need humidity to produce more.Irrigation and shade cloth is very important to increase the crips dramatically and solve the problem. If they are going to give twice more berries then all expenses will be covered.
We have not experienced higher attrition with Honey Bee than any other variety either in our own fields in northern Minnesota or with our customers in our mail order nursery. Strange you lost so many.
Thanks for sharing! I visited the website but I can't find the Haskap 2021 and 2022 reports. Is there any way to see the latest reports? Thanks!
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಿಂದ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುವದು
Thank you for this excellent in-depth report on your haskap project. I am a transplanted Saskatchewanian, trying my hand at raising a few haskaps in Montréal. I purchased bare root plants from a reliable Quebec supplier. They have survived their first winter in zone 5b and have formed neat bushes. No fruit yet, although they did bloom. I have many bird friends and did not net my patch so someone may have pinched the first berries. That’s ok! I am looking forward to some production in year 3. My plants are Boreal Beauties. And the next time I am in PA I look forward to touring your facility
Most Haskap varieties need cross pollination from a different variety of Haskap to produce fruit
My Dad used to grow Polish years ago...then suffered through the silly longer season ones...always needing SCIC lol
Great. Thanks!
Nice
Great work 👍👍
should I use thick landscape fabric or just use bare ground with a layer of mulch?
Our wood mulch treatments so far have been the poorest performing and we need to reapply mulch every year. The regular black plastic seems to be performing well. We have lots of holes forming in the lighter plastic from deer and moose trampling, that allows for weeds to grow through. The landscape fabric doesn't have this issue, but is more costly initially.
@@saskatchewanconservationle6989 I asked another grower a similar question and they said they wanted to avoid plastic landscape fabric as they believed eventually the plastic chemicals will leach into the soil. What are your thoughts regarding this?
Such a tough plant - not even weeding I think can even help...
That's an interesting idea. We have a control treatment with no mulch and spend a lot of time hand weeding. This treatment is definitely the poorest performing as the weeds often get quite large before weeding, but could it be worth it to not weed at all?
@@saskatchewanconservationle6989 I’ve personally had some almost perfect specimens covered in weeds, almost completely shaded
Thoughts on oyster shell mulch?
Sorry I'm not familiar with oyster shell mulch. I could imagine it would be difficult to source in the middle of the prairies and potentially dusty to apply? I'd have lots of questions including how would the calcium carbonate impact the haskaps.
Very nice 👍🏼
Your plots are looking good, patiently awaiting the results. Where did you source the polish variety?
Thank you for allowing us to view your trials, we have used a lot of wood chip mulch to help establish our orchard. Looking forward to your findings.
Thanks! We should hopefully have an updated factsheet to share soon from 2021. We are currently looking into options for bird netting. Have you installed bird netting at your orchard? Any tips?
@@saskatchewanconservationle6989 to date your bird attacks in the UK have been minimal, our crop is still developing and very well hidden by leaves. However I still anticipate the need soonish. Last season our biggest pest were slugs.

Nice boots!!
Excellent video! Very interested in the final results. We planted in 2013 before most of this was really thoroughly researched and can give you horror stories of what NOT to do lol.
Would definitely be interested in hearing those stories!
any tips on how to install or where to purchase bird netting?
I'd be interested in your propagation techniques, fertizer ratios and harvest methods.
We have a couple fact sheets available on our website www.conservationlearningcentre.com. More will be posted as the trial continues.
Awesome set up. I look forward to hearing more about your haskap trails in the future.
Thanks so much! We have an upcoming Field Day on July 22, 2021.
