Boots on the Trail

My name is Lee but on the trail, on UA-cam, and sometimes even at work I am known as Boots. I love my family, I love the outdoors, and I love hiking and exploring. This channel is just a way to share some of my adventures, hiking related content, and to connect with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
A Group Hike to a 50 Year Old Plane Crash Near the Highest Peak in the Eastern US!
Join us on a group hike in Mt Michell State Park, North Carolina! Our hike began at the Mt. Mitchell picnic area and travelled along the Deep Gap/Black Mountain Crest Trail over the second highest peak in the Eastern US (Mt. Craig, 6,647') and the tenth highest peak in the Eastern US (Big Tom, 6,560). These two peaks, known as the Black Brothers, offer very nice views, a lot of history, and the hike is a lovely trek through the high country of North Carolina. The Black Brothers hold a secret that many, many hikers pass by without any knowledge of its existence: remnants of a 1974 plane crash. We ventured slightly off trail to view this wreckage. This was a gorgeous day and a great group!

Hiking Spruce Flats Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains!
Переглядів 197Місяць тому
Join me on a nice morning journey to Spruce Flats Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! In this video, I take you along the scenic yet moderately challenging trail that leads to one of the most lovely waterfalls in the Smokies. The trail and the falls do not appear on a lot of the GSMNP maps as this trail is unmaintained by the park service. As a result, this isn't the most popular ...
Getting Up Up Close & Personal with Meigs Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains

Meigs Falls - easily the most viewed waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Why? Because you don't even have to leave your car to view it! Viewed from Little River Road between Gatlinburg and Townsend, I almost always at least look up while driving by, while many take advantage of the multi-car pull-off to look across the beautiful Little River and up Meigs Creek to this pictures...

Join me in my adventure along the Tanawha Trail in North Carolina! The Tanawha Trail stretches 13.5 miles from Beacon Heights to Julian Price Park. The trail mostly parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway on Grandfather Mountain, even going under and around the Linn Cove Viaduct and over the ever popular Rough Ridge. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) also runs jointly with Tanawha Trail and this sectio...

Waterfalls, waterfalls, and waterfalls. That is what the Middle Prong Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer. Lynn Camp Prong Cascades, Lynn Camp Falls (Upper and Lower), Indian Flats Falls, plus many more cascades. While still quite popular, the Tremont Area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park doesn't get quite the visitors as a lot of the other areas, but not because there is ...
Mannis Branch Falls - a TRUE Hidden Gem in the Great Smoky Mountains!
Переглядів 2413 місяці тому
Mannis Branch Falls is a true hidden gem in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! Thousands of people pass by nearly every day without ever knowing this beauty is right under their noses. The falls are viewable road-side during the winter months (if you know where to look), but the lush green foliage of spring and summer keep this 30' waterfall hidden from the masses. Recent rains called me ...

Thank you!!! this the land of my Dellinger family
@@RebeccaBeck-d3k that’s awesome! Truly a unique and beautiful area. Thanks for watching!
I was there today so sweet!!!!!
@@johnh282 very nice! I hope you had good water flow!
@@BootsontheTrail yeah it was pretty decent thanks!!!!!
@@johnh282 great to hear.
Naaah. I'll pass. UA-cam lets us be there ... without the hike! 😂
LOL. UA-cam portrays a lot, but it is nothing like seeing it in person!
@@BootsontheTrail I agree. Unless your incapable of hiking there. The hike makes it all worth the while. The sound, smell and sight are always rewarding, relaxing and exilerating. The beauty of nature is always wonderful.
@@BootsontheTrail I've done Table Rock several times, and three funeral hikes to overlooks on Roan to release ashes. Too old for that now. Beautiful? Absolutely 💯!
@@garymulligan3864 agreed!
@@brucec8348 now the fun part is finding some of those “secret spots” you can drive to!
That is beautiful ❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much! It was a gorgeous day!
@@BootsontheTrail I'd love to see it in person someday !!!
Great video and definitely a great hike with wonderful views!
Absolutely! So glad you were able to join us!
Great video! We had a blast hiking with you Boots! Thanks for guiding!!
I am glad you were able to join us! It was a great hike!
Great looking falls. The surroundings really do frame it well. Thanks for taking us along. Very well put together video/audio.
Thanks so much!
Great hike and video. Do you have a video of the Babel Tower trail and Razor Edge Rock. It was always my favorite hike and camping on top of the tower is awesome. My first hike in was at night without flashlights. Luckily I had a great guide. @burtwhicker
Thanks for watching! I do not have a video of Babel Tower as the last time i was there was before I started making videos. That really just means I need to take a trip back there soon! 😆 (I did just complete the ITAYG loop last week though - that video should be out in a few weeks).
Beautiful
Thanks so much!
Very nice video! It is one of the places that I hope to visit during my stay in Gatlinburg this autumn 🍁 with my adult children. It should be fun. I think they'll love it. Thanks for sharing your video. 👍
Thanks so much! I am certain that your family will love it!
So beautiful.
Thanks so much!
Do you think the trail was at one time the road? Looks like a tough place to get to.
Yes! Most of the trail was at one time the road. This was one of the reasons that moonshine was so prominent here - it wasn't an easy place for agents to get to due to the terrain and isolation (in addition to there were arguments of which jurisdiction the town was in).
@@BootsontheTrail Thanks, I knew they didn't cross the river and I see no other way out. I might have to do that trail.
@@stevemcmillion3575 it's a good hike. Fall is a great time as you likely could see more remnants throughout the woods, just be sure to check the forest service website to ensure the access road is open as it closes seasonally.
that is a beautiful place, I was there when the forest service were trying to rescue some hunting dogs that got trapped down in the gorge luckily they were rescued
Oh wow! Glad to hear they were rescued!
wow...lots of history and interesting finds on this trail!
Interesting for sure. I loved this hike though. The only people we saw were in the river or on the train :) Thanks for watching!
Why is there no mention of the county Lost Cove is in?
Thanks for watching! The county (Yancy County, NC) is written in the video description in the very first paragraph 🙂
Excellent video. I've been searching for end-to-end documentation of Tanawha and you completely nailed it. We are thinking of doing Beacon Heights to Rough Ridge and back in Sept. We've done all the pieces individually, but think it would be a blast to string them together. Not sure where you'd find as many known landmarks on a relatively short stretch of trail.
Thanks so much! Beacon Heights to Rough Ridge is a great section. I was actually thinking of leading a group hike through part of that as well in September. And agreed - so many individual poi through there!
Beautiful natural creation
100%!

WOW! The Great Smoky Mountains, my favorite place on the planet! Thanks for uploading, this is one trail I've not been on. Bet its absolutely gorgeous in the Fall. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to experience it first hand soon. Great job! Subscribed.
Thanks so much! And yes - this is a fantastic fall hike!
Great content ! Thanks y'all for bringing it to my attention as it is a beautiful region ! At 6.23 or so look into the trees behind the man in the hammock . You can see what is not a tree or anything attached to it .....there are a couple of black / distorted areas that look to me [ a sober older wiser gentleman who is not prone to flights of fancy ] to be faces . Take a close look and if they are not ? What are they ? Thanks again we all appreciate the scenery ! Anyone suggesting '' pareidolia '' will be hunted down and forced to apologize ! Ha !
Looks like a great first off trail hike! It would be nice to show where this is in relation to Gatlinburg on your video, and future hiking videos you do. I do like the perspective Relive gives! Looking forward to watching your content! Thanks!
I do use the park trail map on some of the videos in the Smokies, but mostly for areas that have an actual trail, lol. This one is about a mile or so past the road to Elkmont along Little River Road. Most maps will show where Mannis Branch pours into Little River. I essentially just put the gps of that point to route me to the pull off and searched from there. Thanks for watching!
Dont most people go up Rainbow and down Bullhead? What do you recommend?
I have done it both directions and I know many people that prefer one way over the other. The climb up is about the same regardless of direction. One thing to consider though, is time of day. You may get cooked on Bull Head due to the exposure as the sun crests over the ridge. If you are an early hiker Bull Head is a nice climb up. If you tend to start more mid-morning, then Rainbow is definitely the route to take to stay mostly under canopy.
@@BootsontheTrail aside from the Sun, I have always heard that the trail is too rocky for a safe descent on rainbow falls. That's the reason supposedly, unless I remembering it wrong, that people go up rainbow and come down bullhead. What do you think of that?
It really isn’t that bad, especially since the Trails Forever rehab a few years ago. I have both ascended and descended Rainbow Falls Trail in the dark without issue. I guess it really comes down to personal preference more than anything. There are no rock scrambles, etc., on either of those trails though.
nice place, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Then you'll have more serious health issues eating that, great advise....how about the hike and some fruits or nuts ?
@@samsalazar369 because I love candy corn. Hiking or running is the only time I actually eat it though as it is a legitimate great fuel source (simple sugars are almost instant fuel for your body while exercising).
My wife and I have ambitious of doing this very hike. We are just starting out hiking and in our early 60's
Very nice! This was a great hike. The elevation wasn’t bad but the rocky trail coming down Snake Den Ridge wasn’t pleasant on the feet after so many miles of hiking on the AT. The views you get past Laurel Top into the North Carolina side are the best in the entire Smokies!
meant to say "were were there on May 1, 2017."
hi boots we love your videos. we were the on may 1, 2017 and saw alot of burnt trees. Are there still any burnt trees did you see? thank you!
Thanks so much! You can still see remnants of of the 2016 fire, but not as apparent on the side I hiked in on since I used the 2nd trailhead.
@@BootsontheTrail ok thank you!
The music is overwhelming. Don’t let it ruin a good video. Amplifying natural sounds would be better.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Such a beautiful filming man, outstanding trail! This looks and sounds so enchanting!
Thanks so much! This was a beautiful adventure for sure. Thanks for watching!
Wow!
I know, right? Thanks for watching!
Quick comment.....love the video! What camera are you using and if you have two trekking poles and no chest harness, how are you holding the camera?
Thanks for watching! I am using a combination of my GoPro Hero 10 and my iPhone. I am using a clip for the GoPro that I attach to one of my shoulder straps (you can see it in the thumbnail for this video just below my SPOT device). I like the clip so I can easily take it off and on and attach it to other things if needed.
wow that's really beautiful - great video!
Thank you very much!
I really wanna visit this greeny popular reserved forest, good to see you in energetic hiking
Hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains is always a joy! Thanks for watching!
Wear pants...
Normally I do for off-trail ventures but, I've had the same thing happen THROUGH pants 🤣. This was short 1/4 mile venture off-trail but took a legit 2 hours due to the unexpected thick vegetation.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks so much, this was a great hike!
One thing that is nice is that no 2 falls are exactly the same, similar yes, but not the same!🙂👍
So true! I love them all though. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this video ... if you were to attempt it again - would you do anything differently? I just did the Art Loeb in a day ... and it took me 21:48 minutes (30 miles / 8599' gained) ... so looking at doing this as my next challenge! Also, between Alum and Newfound ... did y'all walk the road up or did y'all get a ride?
Thanks for watching! The only thing I would do differently is the route. Everything else seemed to be good (nutrition, water carry based on availability at the lodge, etc.). From Alum - The third guy in the video that joined us at the lodge on the second ascent - he had parked at Alum trailhead and hiked up to meet us, with the intention of providing a shuttle to NFG (and lunch, lol) so that was part of the plan. I have considered doing this one again with a different route based on my personal strengths - ↑ Bullhead, ↓ Blvd, ↑ Alum, ↓ Trillium, ↑ Rainbow, ↓ Brushy would be my plan so I could ascend the steeper routes. Good luck and you can reach out if you have more questions or need more help with the Tour (I have helped others with their training as well). Congrats on the Day Loeb! That actually has been on my list for about 2 years now, I just haven't been able to get the stars to align to do it! Hopefully soon though!
@@BootsontheTrail wow so much information! Thank you! Right now, the idea is in it's infancy ... just trying to guage it. Currently, playing around with different routes to see what would be most efficient. I already know I want to do Bullhead at night because I'll get sidetracked gawking at the views otherwise (it's what ended up happening when I was on Tennent & Black Balsam). But, I also want to be mentally prepared especially since I can't bring my dog - so it'd be a true solo experience. I'll definitely probably reach back out once I get a better grasp on it - especially for training tips. :) Again, thank you for all the information!
Loose the jam
Thanks for watching!
Super excited!!! This is growing to be something larger and just as wonderful, just goes to show others agree with the message!
Absolutely - It's going to be a great hike!

How many miles , round trip ?
We hiked about 8.5 miles total. Thanks for watching!
Great video. I especially loved the route map at the end of the video. Well done.
Thanks so much!
I REALLY don’t like the music. OMG, ruined the beauty of NATURE…
😁
Awesome video! Snook had to be goofy looking for a peak to be named after his nose. Cool snowmen, super cute. And yeah I was already typing out and angry message about the lack of candy corn!
Haha - you knew it’d be in there!
Cant do the music, see ya

Great scenery! A couple of my two favorite things! Porn music and hiking!
🤣
Why no comment on that massive snake at the 4:28 time stamp?
Haha - that snake wasn’t bothering anyone, lol.
@@BootsontheTrail dang dude…that thing was massive
What kind of snake was it?
@@chrisholmes6029 the first one (small one) I am unsure. The second one was just a large black snake.
