      Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the content 💛 It depends on what you define as the first meeting. For me that's the discovery phase which currently I am willing to offer free of charge but if the client goes ahead then I will make sure to include the discovery consultation within my fees. Like I mention in the video- it's rare that I will do actual design work for free. If I do then it has to be for something really big and valuable. Hope this helps 😊👍

    Can interior designers make profit on trade discount in commercial? Or does the contractor do most of the buying? I know there is a liability aspect of it as well. I would love to hear your insight on this topic

    • @SpaceForEdit

      Yep, that's how most commercial studios make most of their money- through margins. So it would be the added percentage to FF&E and sometimes labour as well if they manage the install process.

    Hi, I went to art school and earned a four-year degree in Fine Art in the late 90s. Only recently did I decide to pursue a certificate in interior design, which essentially amounts to one year's worth of education in the field. I received my certificate in early 2023, and by that summer, I found work at a new interior design firm. Unfortunately, that position didn’t work out, so it’s been about a year and a half since my certification, and I have yet to land a permanent position. I still feel very much like a fish out of water. I have some experience putting together design schemes, and my rendering skills have improved significantly. I’ve also done a bit of freelance work, creating 3D renderings for high-end residential projects. Despite this, I often feel like I know nothing and struggle with imposter syndrome. Recently, I landed an interview with a commercial firm that specializes in healthcare and education projects. I have a huge question mark in my head, but I’m hoping they might take me on as a junior designer. My question is, when does it all "click"? Or does it always feel like I’m never going to work on any interior projects and see them through to completion? This year and a half after receiving my certification has been filled with so much doubt, but I’m sticking it out and hoping this interview goes well. Wish me luck!

    • @SpaceForEdit

      Your confidence will grow with every project you get to work on. The more feedback you get the more growth you'll experience. Just know that it is normal 👌 Don't focus so much on what has been, that's wasted energy. Look at the good and exciting stuff that's ahead! It's hard to wire your brain like this (I battle with this all the time) but you have to have this attitude if you want to get somewhere in this field ✌️ You'll get there eventually. Just keep knocking on those doors and be relentless 🔥

    I work as a Senior Interior Designer for a firm and after 8 years of working for various design studios and the enormous level of stress. I am now ready to shift to freelance. Your videos are very helpful. Similarly to what someone else asked- do you have any tips on vidoes on how to manage the financial aspect ? Shall I consider having a part time job while starting out freelancing ? I’m still in my studio role and want to plan ahead :)

    • @SpaceForEdit

      Ohh, I know the feeling. Interior design job can be ridiculously stressful. Freelancing definitely felt less stressful in that aspect but it can get really challenging when there's no work coming in. That's one of the reasons why I stopped focusing on freelancing tbh. I'll speak about it on a video shortly. But in short- yes, have a part time job along your freelance biz if you can manage it. And focus on getting clients who can give you return business or some kind of contract for multiple months. That's how the most successful freelancers keep going 👍

      When I was thinking about resigning I also looked at some sales options. So maybe work for furniture, lighting or fabrics suppliers as I knew of some people who had done that. But it's not as creative as a designers job so I knew it wasn't an option for me.. there's project management too. But I think the real freedom comes from doing your own thing on your own terms, just takes time, patience and grind to get there 💫

    Love your videos too! I also just recently discovered your channel and there is so much amazing information on here, I hope you keep doing these! I do have a degree, but not in interior design. I don't think college does a good job of preparing anyone for their field of choice, unfortunetly. It's definitely the on the job training that does. As far as education goes here in the US it ranges state to state, if you are able to practice interior design without a degree. In mine you can, you just can't claim you are a, "licenced Interior Designer". The problem I'm facing as an Interior Designer is without the NCIDQ certificate, I'm unable to belong to the trade programs, which i'm unsure I need to, but know it would be added income if I could. You can't take the test unless you have a 2 year ID degree and 3 years of work experience in the industry.

      Hi Danni! Welcome to the fam 🙂✌️ so glad you've found the channel and it's been useful info. I try my best to juggle between this and my design business so bare with me if there's a bit of silence from time to time. I enjoy making videos and plan to do it as long as I can 👍 Thanks so much for sharing the insight on this topic from the US perspective. I had a rough idea about the setup but this explains it all a lot better. Such a shame that you have to have a certain certificate to be able to grow your business. In the UK we can work with any suppliers and contractors on our own terms.

    Even Deepak Chopra has told others to lie in resumes or job interviews just to get a job. There's no problem. Sometimes people need help with getting rid of GUILT rather than needing help to get a job. Don't you think? Lie without guilt. Do what you gotta do to get what you want. Each to their own.

    • @SpaceForEdit
      @SpaceForEdit 3 місяці тому

      Not sure if I can agree with this one.. you can of course do what you want but the lies will soon enough catch up with you. If you're a person who can improvise and deal with issues on the spot then you might get away with it but if you can't... Then you'll be in trouble and risk looking like a fool and loosing the position after the probo period. And in some way the whole 'fakeness' will then follow you for the rest of your career. There are too many people out there who talk the talk but they haven't actually walked the walk which causes a lot of issues down the line.

    How about being self-employed right away to avoid climbing the social ladder that way? What do you think?

    • @SpaceForEdit
      @SpaceForEdit 3 місяці тому

      There is some gains there but it all depends how well you are prepared for the self employed journey. I think there is a lot that you can learn from being an employee. And after a couple of years you can go out on your own as you've gathered a lot of knowledge about the industry 👍

      @@SpaceForEdit you should make a video about self-employment. How do you promote yourself from now onwards?

    Was a great video. We aren't meant to be perfect 💕. Years ago I didn't have the mindset like I have now to pursue... The gift was always there, but not the correct mindset. So important. 🌺🌸💮

    I live in Wyoming, USA. After being a stay at home mama for 10 years I got a job as an interior designer making $26/hr. I had graduated with a bachelors degree and masters degree back in 2011. I worked while in school starting at $7/hr, then $10/hr internship, then a graduate assistant at $15/hr. Then was offered a job at $16/hr back In 2012 that I turned down to stay at home with our first kiddo.

      Oh wow, well done for jumping back into the industry! How are you feeling about it? And thank you so much for sharing the insights! As I compare it to the UK average, it does seem higher but then again your cost of living could be higher etc. Do you feel like your wage is fair compared to the work that you're putting in?

    • @lizprice2011
      @lizprice2011 3 місяці тому

      @@SpaceForEdit I do think the wage is ok but honestly would probably make more if I was working for myself and doing contract work… maybe. I’m not ready to go it on my own just yet. The networking, marketing and essentially getting my own jobs sounds like a bit much for the time I have to invest. I work for an architect and there hasn’t been a lot of interior design work in what they have done recently, so I feel a little stuck. Plus I have a newborn baby, still on maternity leave for another week… trying to figure out how to get work done with him in my arms.
