Instructions:
Sky is an easy gradient using the colors Titanium White + Cobalt Blue + Light Ultramarine Blue. The sky is darker at the top.
Sketch some clouds.
Then, using a watered-down white, paint the first layer of clouds.
The darkest part of the clouds should be a mixture of the sky color + some white. Slowly add more white to the mixture as you layer paint for the clouds.
Finally, add highlights with pure white, or slightly off-white.
The palm tree trunk is just a mixture of Raw Umber + Ivory Black + Titanium White. The top of the trunk is a lighter brown.
You’ll want to mix a few shades of green for the palm tree leaves.
Dark: Hooker’s Green Deep Hue + Ivory Black
Mid: Sap Green Hue + Raw Umber
Highlight: Sap Green Hue + Raw Sienna + Naples Yellow
Highlight: Sap Green Hue + Raw Sienna + Naples Yellow + Cadmium Yellow Light
It’s best to sketch out the drawing on trace paper before drawing directly on the painting.
I usually paint the stem of the leaves first, then I work on one at a time. Darkest to light, always.
Slowly layer on the highlights. It’s important to use the thinnest brushes possible for this, otherwise, the palm won’t look as sharp.
MATERIALS:
Fluid Watercolor Paper 140 lb (300 gsm), 3M Blue Tape, Golden Acrylics, Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics, Golden Fluid Retarder, X-Acto Knife, trace paper, an assortment of brushes.
PAINT:
Titanium White, Cobalt Blue, Light Ultramarine Blue, Raw Umber, Ivory Black, Hooker's Green Deep Hue, Sap Green Hue, Raw Sienna, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light.
