New to your podcast. I really appreciated this deep dive into Machine Man. I feel like I was one of the only kids who was buying this when it came out. I remembered that conversation with the cab driver as soon as you brought it up! Much of Machine Man was Kirby's best writing, dialogue-wise. But yeah, he was definitely clunky. Machine Man's struggle with his responsibility to the world was Kirby at his best. The obvious passion for the work you all showed in this conversation was much appreciated. Thank you.
The Pèrez/Byrne FF runs are my favorite as both those artists are my all time favorite artists!
I used to love the words "Annual" and "King Size" as a kid. It was just great!❤❤❤
Man I love this series, I watched the first b.p.r.d video and the Hellboy one. Pleas continue to with this series, its amazing. As someone who has read almost everything in the hellboy universe I say this is awsome.
I wish they would have teamed Hulk & Thing for several issues.
They were really om gamei in early 80s
very nice take. i really agree especially in the first 2.30 minutes. that everyday detail for their daily lives in Baxter building , that's great
Spikey Thing was the best. I wish they would bring him back.
I thought issue 232 was Byrne's first issue now I find out it's issue 220.
Loved the musical score
Your videos are top. notch. Bravo!
Yes. B.P.R.D. was GREAT.
Joe Sinnott the lesser known hero of the FF comics
A Gene Parmesan reference in a Fantastic Four video? Outstanding!
Terrax was my favorite herald of Galactus; I just liked him more than the others.
Another excellent video, thanks for posting!
"Hulk SMASH"!! "It's CLOBBERIN' time"!! Hulk vs Thing!!! 😂👍
Yeah…Byrne as a person. I idolized him as an artist. I became a comic book artist because of him(worked a bit but pivoted to graphic design due to making ends meet), so when I had a chance to meet him at a con in the 80s, I was so excited. I waited in line to get his autograph and when it came time for my interface with him, I was literally pushed aside by an art collector talking business. I stood there hoping to get one last chance at a moment and Byrne looked at me and simply said, “F@ck Off.” I was nine. I stood there for a minute as he walked away. I suddenly hear a guy say, “Hey, kid. Come here.” It was George Perez. He saw what happened and invited me to sit with him and draw and talk comics. Teen Titans was my second fave series(X-Men obvz my fave). I drew Kid Flash and he gave me tips on drawing and bought me a soda. I think his daughter was there too. They say never meet your heroes(Byrne) but I say I hope you do(Perez).
I watched and read anything that Byrne did in my comic collecting days Fantastic Four, X-men, the Avengers, Alpha Flight and even Superman.
Read V. Hamlin’s Alley Oop. Kirby clearly took the character of Ben from Alley Oop. Just like he borrowed the design of the Demon from Hal Foster or swiped Milton Caniff’s dialogue-less fight sequences.
The Chic Stone inked issues are great, I think this is when they started to have the "Classic" look that Joe Sinnott cemented.
1:47 Ben has an awesome hoagie. Start every vid with a massive sandwich, plz.
Love Byrne's run. I'm a huge fan of his art (also his writing, but to a lesser degree), and I do feel he's his own best inker, though that opinion is based mostly on those early issues of his run. His later work where he experimented with various styles had mixed results. I agree on Secret Wars. It just wasn't that great a story (and not giving Mike Zeck enough time to properly draw the series certainly didn't help things). And while I won't recommend SWII, that series did give us the the FF tie-in issue with the extremely well-thought-out time paradox that allowed Doom to return. (I've always wanted a Doom solo done by Bryne. Just 50 issues or so to really get inside the head of comics greatest villain.)
I effing hated Secret Wars. Probably have some toys in the closet still though, who could pass them up? Idaho Smith is when I knew I loved what I was reading, and bought all the Byrne back issues from there.
Byrne rules
Doug Moench. Is it pronounced Mench or Munch? I called him Moonch when I was a kid.
I’ve always said “Munch” but have heard all the different pronunciations.
That throwaway reference to Gene Parmesean made me laugh out loud. I see you!
LOVEDD BRYNE'S RUN. HE RESTORED THE COMIC BACK TO ITS 60S GREATNESS.
That awesome "live" footage ar 6:36, where is that from?
Honorable mension, What if The FF Had No Powers?
Byrne's greatest inker comes later in Karl Kesel. I love that cartoon. Every time Johnny screams like a girl has me in stitches.😂
They were both already on MK in Hulk magazine. But on FF, but as per usual on FF at the time, Joe Sinnott and others were told to keep everything looking the same.
Bill Sienkiewicz is hands down my favorite artist. As a young comic reader in the early 80s, I initially hated his guest inking gigs on the books I collected. But as I grew into adulthood by the '90s his artwork his art on Batman, Daredevil, and his abstract painted covers for Vertigo and Eclipse titles captivated me. Trevor Von Eden too.
I'm with you -- Secret Wars was a cheesy move, from which comics has still not recovered. The Byrne run on FF was just about the last comic run I followed for 15 years.
I can only imagine what you'll have to say about the 90's DeFalco era FF. I started buying around then & that was a wild ride. LOL
There Had to be a mandate that the Fantastic Four maintain a particular house style in those early 1980's issues. You can see that those earlier Byrne issues, under Sinnott inks were incredibly dull as were the issues done by Perez previous. You compare their issues of FF to the issues of Avenger of the same period... all of the dynamism is lost on the FF issues. I don't think it was Sinnott as yes, he started inking Sienkiewicz's FF issues, but was soon replaced by Pablo Marcos who worked wonderfully with Perez! You can see some strange intent in the art, and the constraint to keep it formalized. Look at Fantastic Four #225 and Moon Knight #2, both cover-dated Dec 1980. Or go forward to Fantastic Four #231, one of the worst drawn comics ever, and Moon Knight #8... where Sienkiewicz started flexing his talent. So 4 months after X-iting the X-Men, I'm fairly sure that Shooter let Byrne do whatever he felt like doing and created one of the Greatist runs of comics Ever!
3 way tye for best replacement character: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider
Terry Austin is Byrne’s best inker.
I didn’t hear you mention 252, the “horizontal” issue. Can’t remember seeing another comic like that
That’s a good pick. There’s an Allred Silver Surfer issue that comes to mind that has to be flipped around to read the story. It’s Radd.
back in 2000-2002 or so marvel had all their annual done sideways.
I was a Byrne superfan in the first half of the 80s, and particularly loved his FF run. Having said that, as I got older I saw a lot of the flaws in his work, both story and art, but it’s hard to deny that he had more great, inspired ideas, both dramatically and visually, then any creators since Lee and Kirby. He wasn’t wrong to ignore almost the entirety of 70s FF, btw. Dave and Paty Cockrum reportedly complained directly to Stan Lee that Byrne was destroying his FF with off-model art and characterization, and Stan looked at one of the issues and thought it was great.😆Marv Wolfman and Len Wein were also pissy about Byrne ignoring their stories, but they did the same to other creators on numerous occasions. There’s a lot to criticize with Byrne, but FF may be the best stuff he ever did, and better than 90% of everything else that’s been done with them.
Annnnd Spidey sons the Xmen in Secret Wars
Great video! One of my favorites issues was 234, The Man with the Power! an ordinary man that develops godlike powers.
Good old Skip. Never to show up again.
@@witsendpod Hahaha true!
Finally ‼️.....a John Byrne reference 🙌🏿....❤ The Byrne era 👏🏿
Hickman version of SW better than the original? OK. Sure.
The upcoming FF movie will feature Byrne's white-blue uniform. Nice nod to the Byrne era.
Amazing work. I need a video like this...about Tom DeFalco's run 💙
As for Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz trying new approaches and bringing in new characters during their brief run... That wasn't exactly by choice. Moench revealed in Comics Creators on Fantastic Four that Marvel editorial told him to lay off the FF's classic rogues for at least a year. The editors felt they'd been overused. That's why Moench brings in analogues of the more famous villains. His Negative Zone creation Stygorr might as well be Annihilus, the gigantic Ebon Seeker was a planetary threat comparable to Galactus. He was also 'persuaded' to write in the Salem's Seven and finish up danglers from the Shogun Warriors series that was recently cancelled. Moench dutifully did as he was told, but he also felt the art didn't really click with the kind of FF stories he was telling. Sienkiewicz was emulating Neal Adams which worked on Moon Knight but not on Fantastic Four.
@@Norvo82 this little run and the post Byrne, pre Simonson issues are the only volume 1 FF issues I haven't read- I'd like to eventually, if only because I want to see what that era of Sienkiewicz inked by Sinnott looks like
I'm told the Doombots weren't just about explaining Doom's appearances in the '70s, but also a dig at Chris Claremont for using Doom in his X-Men comic (rivalry?). Funny that he says that the Doombots are programmed "to fool a telepath." One of the best Doom covers was the X-Men one though.
Byrne was mad that in the X-Men book Arcade struck a match off Doom's armor to light his cigar.
The John Byrne Fantastic Four era is 2nd to only the Stan Lee Jack Kirby era...& YES ..Byrne is his own best inker ... with Joe Sinnot a close 2nd.. just like Joe Sinnot was Jack Kirby's best inker.
After remembering all of the cool covers I'd seen on FF comics, and still fondly remembering John Byrne's work with Clairmont on X-Men (Byrne's pencils and Terry Austin's Inks were the best art in the business at that time, IMHO), I finally collected and DEVOURED the entire Byrne run on FF. No slow stories. Every new arc revisiting a classic villain and/or location while remaining relevant to the rest of the Marvel Universe. Stalwart Super Hero's. Explorers of Time, Space, and neighboring dimensions. You really felt that this was Marvels 'First Family' under Johns stint at the helm, & I never tired of reading what he'd do with the team next...
I also like Alpha Flight, but felt sad that he only had two years of stories for this team which was meant as a one-off team invented to go toe-to-toe with the X-Men. I had a hankering to look at their other appearances in comics before he left, like Marvel Team-Up and Machine Man, but they weren't that good.
