Chicago's Bus Fleets Need More Time to Electrify
Переглядів 3,2 тис.Рік тому
The Illinois Senate passed a new law requiring CTA, Pace, and Metra to exclusively purchase electric buses HB1342. I'm going to talk about why it's problematic. The Bill can be found here: legiscan.com/IL/bill/HB1342/2023 This is a re-upload. I was mistaken, Metra is in fact NOT affected by this bill. Thank you to @ChicagolandTransit for providing some of the footage in this video.

Too many of these routes mentioned are on the South side. If this person knew anything about the South side, they would understand why there is a need for all of these bus routes, as these areas lack many resources and many opportunities to work which is why they need so much transportation travelling elsewhere in the city to be able to get to work or shop.
Washington/Wabash opened in 2017, not 2018
I feel like putting the Merchandise Mart entrance inside the namesake building kinda devalued the namesake building so I’m glad that the Harold Washington 📚 didn’t build an entrance to its namesake Ⓜ️
Aye, I see that 169 bus going through my street a couple times
I did rode on 173 once on a Former Pace 1990 Orion 1 bus from Lakeview to Hyde Park, it was pretty fun
I love the L, but it's being lacking Express train service. And being from NYC I'm used to Express trains. My question is: Why is the Chicago L lacking Express train service?
It was great to see you and the kids poop kids during Austin Hutcheson Koda and poop 💩 is not
I am very biased, but Western at the very bottom of the list is crazy The bias probably comes from the fact I've lived on the north side my whole life, so that station is by far my most used station on the entire L system
The lake shore train would be insane
That's so weird that CTA decided to move the artics to Chicago Park and 77th depots, and mostly running on routes 54 Cicero, 53 Pulaski, 20 Madison, 66 Chicago, 79 79th Street, 4 Cottage Grove, and 87 87th from 2020 - 2022
Wish he post more often 😢
I wish I could, but I've been really busy. I have a big one coming soon though.
Nice explanation
Kinda funny, i just took the 169 yesterday morning. I was planning to take the 392 (still had a couple more transfers to go), but it left early before the 390 I was on arrived, so I had to go a different route
My son wants to do this for his birthday.
You are so right about Roosevelt I can say that because I work for the authority so much fair evasion and I also ride this line going to my station so this is fun to watch😂😂😂
0:08 what’s that thing on the top
The Yellow line used to run on overhead wires, so the trains that operated on it needed pantographs. Since the roofs of L cars are curved, the racks were added to create a flat surface for the pantographs. I guess once they removed the pantographs, they decided that there was no need to remove the racks.
Bro Metra is not rapid transit, the blue island me branch is single tracked, even if Metra was every 15 min rapid transit would do wonders
My entire point is that Metra Electric can be turned into rapid transit. The Blue island branch can be double tracked for an extremely low amount of money, though, with the double tracked section at Halsted, you could still run trains about every 20 minutes if you timed everything correctly. A frequency of every 15 minutes isn't set in stone. If a higher frequency is determined to be worthwhile, it's certainly possible to implement (of course you'd have to terminate some trains at 115th). At the end of the day, any issue you may have with Metra Electric as opposed to the L can be solved with far less money and far greater benefit than building the red line extension.
Dedicated BRT lanes in a city like Chicago is a tough proposition, because the area has developed for decades around a different concept. This concept seems to have promise. Hopefully they can make it work right.
Should I email this video to the cta? Edit: I did
The Green Line got demolished due to a pastor not wanting the tracks there since it interrupted his sermons, not the crime. The neighborhood would actually love for the green line to come back to Stony.
I think the Low Line is a slightly humorous play off the well known High Line in Manhattan , which was a repurposed elevated train that was no longer in use.
U gotta update this with Damen
automatically wrong pulaski is the greatest station simply because of this masterpiece: ua-cam.com/video/Dhs-nCB-MnQ/v-deo.htmlsi=oqo43LhtBEVGdjWn
Waiting for pink, yellow and purple lines Would love to see top 10 stops/extensions needed on red, brown, purple lines
You sou d like the type of guy who shouldnt take public transit. Pace has short buses for guys like you
I went to curie high school so Pulaski orange line station is kinda special to me
Unfortunately I don’t think buses can drive on interstates for some reason, might have something to do with insurance, so the 28 might not work
Many out of service buses use the interstates, and many former routes such as the X98, 99, 99M, 162, and 164 used to as well.
I would like to point out that the areas around the orange line like Pulaski and Kedzie may seem desolate to those who don't live there, but the areas are very lively during the day. Pulaski in particular is a major transportation hub for the students and staff for the nearby high school! The areas are pretty industrial because the communities living there are made up of mainly working class families, who work in those areas, and rely a lot on the local transportation. Great video though :)
You're both right. There's nothing wrong with industry and working class families, it's just that the immediate area around the stations could have a lot more potential for all the times they do get lively. There could (and should) be a few small businesses and/or services that attract all the foot traffic being generated. It also serves as a way to generate more ridership for the orange line which is heavily dependent on bus connections at the moment. Not saying they're compltely "desolate" but they're not what urban transit stations should be either
Rosemont serves the Donald E Stephens Convention Center.
This list would be longer if Central, Kostner, and California (Forest Park Branch) stations weren't abandoned.
As someone who lives near Roosevelt, functionally it is a great station and has much better land use than all of the dedicated Orange Line stations. There are some of the things you mentioned going on there but not 24/7 and as a personal review it is not as bad as the media portrays it.
Agreed. I work right next door and yes, it gets undeniably sketchy at times (usually in the summer) but in general it's not bad enough to make it the worst.
Yellow line when?
I think the 173 was created because it gave University of Chicago students a chance to go up into the River North and Lakeview areas to hit the bars. That used to be a real busy route when it started. That the students could go hit the bars and party it up and then they can get on the bus and go back to the University of chicago. I think that the ridership just fell off for some reason but I do remember when it started that it was a real busy bus route. It was a bar hopping bus.
Dub
Lmao I'm one of the 5% (thats probably an exaggeration too) of people who walk to kedzie, it is pretty terrible to walk near so many cars but I'm surprised you did not mention the new dumpster that makes the experience worse
Try To Do The Purple Line
How I Rank Mines Is 16: Roosevelt 15: Pulaski 14: Clark & Lake 13: State & Lake 12: Halsted 11: Washington & Wells 10: 35th & Archer 9: Adams & Wabash 8: Lasalle & Van Buren 7: Harold Washington Library 6: Quincy 5: Kedzie 4: Western 3: Ashland 2: Midway 1: Washington & Wabash
Still waiting for the Yellow Line
The yellow line has 3 stations that should be quick to figure out
My prediction 1. Dempster Skokie 2. Oakton Skokie 3. Howard
I actually like the Pulaski station. If I recall correctly, it has third largest parking lot of any CTA station.
About the crime at Roosevelt and in the South Loop, it doesn’t help that the CPD moved the Area 1 headquarters from Roosevelt and State to 35th and Michigan.
My Ranking from Worst To Best That I Embarked/Disembarked: Pulaski, Roosevelt, Midway, State/Lake, LaSalle/Van Buren, Clark/Lake, Quincy, Adams/Wabash, Harold Washington 📚-State/Van Buren, & Washington/Wabash
Another great vid! Keep up the great work man! 👍
As someone who uses Clark/lake regularly CTA/CPD have done a good job cleaning it up as the wild smell and loitering that were pretty severe up until 6 months ago are mostly gone.
I almost got shot on Roosevelt & State but besides that scuffle its very safe the media over exaggerates it
I work right there and never had any issues, but I do see a lot more sketchy things near the station than anywhere else in the nearby area. Don't get into any "scuffles" in Chicago.
I like how his favorite stations are mostly the ones that have already existed before the Orange Line existed but yeah, I do agree that they are a bit boring compared to the other stations on the other lines and on the loop. Hopefully CTA remodels some so that they'll look nicer.
You should talk about the Metra fleet dude.
Thank God they’re finally starting to replace the rolling stock on the Rock Island. Their trains are almost as old as me.
Still waiting for the pink line
Polk is my favorite station on pink line because of its warm quaint feeling being within the center of my medical district
I love how I'm watching this video while using the orange line to get home 💀💀
Try metra electric ranking
I really like that idea
