Setup Apache Guacamole with Docker in 2024
Installers are a bit Eh... Debian installer for example is over 15 years old now I think. Granted, 15 years ago they where ahead of windows. But now it's almost as annoying. It is very clear and you actually get to do something relevant. aka the settings actually do something meaningful and it's not the windows installer's: "I let you jump through hoops to give you the illusion of control." But if you compare it to Ubuntu it is a lot of: Wait for it to do something then set the next step. Wait and repeat. While __buntu lets you set a lot of things early and then just does everything. But with the speed of current computers and internet connection the Debian installer is not annoying anymore since it is still pretty fast. And they are probably and now reasonably just waiting the speed increases out. After all, if the setup is just fast enough that eliminates the wait times too.And installing from USB3+ to an M.2 SSD with 100mbit+ internet connection is already REALLY fast.
Great ideas. Should have linked to previous video in the comments. What do you think is the best OS for hosting a home lab?
Thank you! This was super helpful.
You're welcome!
THANK YOU! i have no idea why they don't have a ready to go mysql container and a compose file listed in documentation already, why the hell do we need to do it all manually?...
You’re welcome!
I just mount my Synology via SMB3 to ~/nas/ and then use rsync. I'm sure there is another way to sync but I'm very comfortable with rsync. I'll be honest, I like it mounted as a local directory and didn't even look at the Synology Linux apps.
The original tools often work the best.. don't they..
is there a way to encrypt or put a password on that tar file?
You could just run it through gpg..
Weird experience. I had a bit worse one some 20 years ago, then something similar around 15 years ago. But since some 10 years ago Linux just works. Everything. Sad that someone still has such issues, I have not seen them long years. Of course, before I make a choice of buying anything, I look if the maker is good with Linux or to say more correctly, good with standards. I simply do not buy random shit. And everything works always. P.S. Promoting recall ... that is an ad. No sane, unaffiliated person would do that.
Daily driver Linux for 3 months. Loving the customisation option. And I ended on arch + dwm not going back to windows
Is there a way to repoint this to our own endpoint?
Hmm.. I don't know offhand.. could be something buried in the aws cli settings.
Awesome tutorial, I was able to get it running! Was curious if you know how to enable extensions? I’m trying to enable saml, but no luck. I’ve tried copying the saml jar file into /home/guacamole/.guacamole/extensions, but the file gets removed after restarting the container. I’ve also tried adding the extension by editing the stack config in portainer, but no luck. Any suggestions?
Sorry but I don't know how to enable extensions.. didn't get to the point of trying that.
same problem....
bah. fedora's crap. You'd probably have been better with endeavour, or feeling a little nuts? arch. I'm using arch now. I get to tell people that. But honestly, archinstall was sooo easy. and it'll build your desktop for you. you still need nvidia, but that's why i suggested endeavour. nvidia comes installed. And while the arch wiki can be tedious, it's tedious for a reason. I generally scan for what I need. I tried fedora recently. I actually couldn't get nvidia to work before I borked it. There is also a reason why I'm on amd now.
This doesn't help at all to get into Glacier Deep Archive.
There is a separate video on just that topic
a cheep? 😂 i think linux is at use easier then windows (not under the hood) but at daily use :) i go too linux by windows bug who not let me again install win11 and wipe all my data and ban my original payed at ms site windows accounts so i use an win10 bootstick only for make a linux boot stick and boot arch linux, yes it was hard at begin with terminal after 30years windows and dos, but arch was better then windows mmch easier at the UI at the moment i use it daily (8-20hrs) the last 10 months... i dont see it as challenge it an free OS, the last 6months i learned more at terminal and at bugs i not really mmiss windows till now my mouse rgb not work and mouse mmakros wont work bt only for this go too windows again? hell NO! all my games (400+) exapt of 1 run at Linux too so who cares windows, i know only if anytimme i buy a steamdeck or deck 2 or handheld with linux its much easier ;D i use same as windows krita and photofiltre studio X and i workes fine, cp2077 i modded really hard on linux :D cp2077 and the witcher 3 same at my pps 4 and ps5 orts at steam it runs with costum ge aur or experimental or proton 9.11-4 perfect 9.11-4 is from proton plus
what do you prefer? opnsense or pfsense?
opnsense.. but for a lame reason, I like the UI better. lawrence systems did a good video on the why he likes pfsense better and he goes into how they support the community, etc... might be worth checking out.
What even is "year of the linux desktop?" To me it's every year, haven't had windows installed bare metal for 7 years now, some vms though, but windows 10 was just awful after 7.
Thank you for the great tutorial, I am still stuck on opnsense can't ping the ubuntu (vise versa works), I set the ubuntu to manual to 192.168.1.2 and reload all services
What is the ip of the opnsense machine?
I followed your tutorial step by step, I changed my Lan to 172.16.1.1/16
I hate how fedora doesnt ship common software and packages like other distro's
Ultramarine does it’s based on fedora.
@@reigan42 Yeah there are fedora based distros that ship sane default packages. I use nobara and its comes with all the codecs and packages you'd expect. But then people try base fedora and have issues due to missing codecs and packages.
I will also say this was a very honest good review. I have used linux since 2007 and it is refreshing for someone to say "hey I have this weird stuff which of course doesn't work well without a lot of effort, but all these normal things work just fine."
Thanks! It definitely is not all unicorns and rainbows, but has come a long way!
I am not understanding the Davinci Resolve AAC licensing issue. If it were licensing then Windows would also have the same issue
Excellent video! Thank you so much for creating this. It was very helpful to get my UDM set up with a segmented network. I just have one issue. I added 3 new WiFi networks for a total of 4. I am trying to add another and I am getting a message when I try to click on Create New that says "You have reached the maximum number of WLANs(4) per band for all APs. I am not sure what to do to fix this. It looked to me like you had more than 4 set up?
Any chance you have wireless meshing enabled? It is under System -> Advanced in the Network app. If meshing is enabled you can't have more than 4 networks on one access point.
@@SonoranTech-hf5hf yes I do. At this point I only have one AP. Do I really need that on?
Nope you don’t need meshing on with one access point.
@@SonoranTech-hf5hf thanks for the help on this.
Thanks, this worked for me and you really explained it well.
Glad it helped!
@@SonoranTech-hf5hf Haha, first reboot the guacamole container randomly grabbed the mysql container's IP address during startup, causing mysql to fail to start. Rearranged the order in the compose file and the next reboot worked. Don't know if that was random or if the order counts.
I ended up needing to use a static address for all the containers, but other than that it is working as advertised. Thanks again for pulling it all together.
All was going well until 15:10 when you SSH into your server to find initdb.sql. I couldnt find it at all? A quick google says it should be in /var/lib/mysql/ but even that directory doesnt exist. When i enter ls, i get: bin cdrom home lib.usr-is-merged mnt root sbin.usr-is-merged swap.img usr bin.usr-is-merged dev lib lost+found opt run snap sys var boot etc lib64 media proc sbin srv tmp Appreciate your help so i can continue with your excellent tutorial!
I just completed this tutorial and on my system it was at /opt/guacamole/mysql/01-initdb.sql
@notsocc Did this work for you?
docker run --rm guacamole/guacamole /opt/guacamole/bin/initdb.sh --mysql > initdb.sql ➠ Executing above command on your server would generate "initdb.sql". ➠ It doesn't pre-exist on your server or on any path inside of your server. once you generate it you can follow the steps mentioned in the video.
I do something similar.
what do i do if the website is just not there? because it just says 404 not found
In the port exposed correctly and are you hitting the right port?
◉ I had the same issue and Video looks half baked to me. We should not miss any step. ◉ My eyes were not able to see the tiny text the author uses. ◉ A Novice docker user will never be able to host Guacamole just watching this video. Fix: You need to add "guacamole" at the end of the http link to access the dashboard. Ex: 192.168.1.12:8080/guacamole Thanks to the author for this content as i am not a beginner.
A key bit of info is missing from the video, though it is visible: localhost:8080 will get a 404 error, but the URL actually has /guacamole after the port. Was going to check comments for this as well.
hello, my docker install con win11 (computer A, ip 172.16.16.x , computer A can connect RDP to computer B, same range address) But I have installed guacamole on docker desktop computer A, but guac cant connect to Computer B) please help
Tough to narrow it down.. that could be many issues. Did the logs have any helpful information?
baaaaa
2001 was the year of Linux. It must be true. I'd read it on the internet.
Exactly
You may really like Log Seq in addition to obsidian for notes as it shares the same data format but offers a better "built-in" & maintained tool set. No one should be surprised when Fedora pukes... Being stable isn't the objective AS MUCH AS being the experimental leg of Red Hat. I'm not saying that most users don't or won't have an exceptional experience with Fedora but if it does puke be ready to submit a bug report to get it fixed ASAP as the dev team is outstanding but know that going in...
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm new to Glacier. Let's say we initiate the restoration of a file called abcdef.tar. And after we've downloaded it, does the original file (abcdef.tar) on the server remain there or be deleted automatically?
I've been using Windows since 3.1, and I don't remember EVER having to deal with any kind of RECALL. It seems that certain Linux enthusiasts want to blame EVEN the extinction of the dinosaurs - on Windows! 😂
:) I'm not thrilled with the idea of recall at all. To me they aren't clear about the roi on it. I am risking my data and privacy for what? Being able to find something faster.. seems like I'm risking much more than I'm getting.
@@SonoranTech-hf5hf But ACAIN, your're assuming recall, and I haven't, and don't, see any EVIDENCE for that.
Thanks.
Welcome!
The worse one was the false positive CSAM one where Google called the police. The police found the father totally innocent (was a photo of his kid requested by the doctor) yet Google still refused to reinstate the guys account.
Yep, that was nuts.
IMPI, ILO or IDRAC pulls like 5-10 Watts on Idle. We have some older Servers for testing in our Office Rack and as we are in Germany, we pull the plugs too when not using them.
I stopped using Windows right before 8 came out. 2010, maybe? At first I used FreeBSD, then after a few years I moved to Ubuntu. Nowadays I use MacOS for work, because I love Apple Silicon and it works best with MacOS. I still use Linux almost on daily basis, for gaming. Cheers.
I’m still fond of FreeBSD but I came to the realization Linux is easier and in the end that makes it better. That’s why I stopped using FreeBSD on our servers as well.
Agree I switched to MacOS recently with the M3 chip and the overall experience has been amazing.
yeah unfortunately the Davinci window size issue, is a gnome issue. obviously a kde Ubuntu version would not have that issue but it's not something Ubuntu themselves would fix
For many months I have been distro hopping to find ones that suit me. Ubuntu an Mint worked fine out of the box but I wanted to try others first. Almost all of them had some annoying bugs which I was unable to resolve. I settled on Garuda for my gaming PC, Mint for my media PC and MX for my laptop and main work PC. KDE Neon 6 also worked well on all PC's and the laptop. Buggy ones--- (either buggy out of the box or after updates) POP OS, Nitrux (really liked this one except for the bugs), Zorin, Manjaro, Debian, Fedora. There were others but I don't remember them. I spent many hours chasing fixes and gave up in the end.
thanks for this... i couldn't get it working till I watched your video!!!
You are welcome!
@@SonoranTech-hf5hf I was going to give up on truenas! These types of videos are important as it's a great software but does have a learning curve. In comparison Unraid is way easier to use and has alot of tutorials online!
I just has say " You Are A Life Saver " that's all. Thank You
thanks for the framework terms. mb
Great tutorial! This isn't one of those configuration videos filled with nothing but magic incantations and mystery settings. Instead, it's a very well thought out and produced lesson full of both what-to-dos and (most importantly) why-to-dos. With your help I was able to get my new DS223j configured for network storage and my entire Proxmox array of VMs and containers backed up without a hitch. I know from experience (long-time engineering professor) how much planning and work goes into making effective tutorials such as this. You've got the gift--very much appreciated!
Thank you so much for the kind comment! Glad it was helpful and will keep working on the tutorials!
This installation method doesn't include TOTP
Excellent and detailed video. Thank you.
For remote access i used Tailscale. Once two devices are connected to Tailscale you can just use windows to map a network place to the NAS. It wont show up at first but you you have to type the device name like //nas-name/ and then windows should see it. It works great and i can access any computers connected to the tailscale remotely just as they would appear locally.
Tailscale is a good option. One problem I've run into that corporate issues machines are quite restrictive on what you can install, so it rules out many options for remote access.
If you have a garden, buy a tool shed, buy another Synology, or just an old cheap server off eBay, dig a trench and lap a Lan cable, do you backups from house to tool shed. Whatever you do it's going to cheaper than cloud. Bit of capital outlay then 15-30 watts power costs and no egress bill. The figures are scary. Somebody pressed the wrong button and we got a £5k bill at work. What about other providers, does it support Backblaze?
Yeah, or use a friend's house. It does support backblaze through the s3 interface.
Your problem with fedora is your GPU I use an AMD Radeon 7800 XT and it works fine without any trouble and no need for drivers
How do you have 2 different networks for monitoring and for the opnsense vm ? It is something you created on your router ? Because I can't access internet by creating a second network, I guess I have to add it in my router ?
As a Fedora Linux user, I must agree that installing NVIDIA drivers on Fedora is a less-than-simple process. I recently wanted to switch from KDE Plasma spin to Sway tiling WM spin on Fedora 40 because I was getting more and more annoyed with certain things in KDE Plasma (these things probably wouldn't bother the average Joe) I installed Sway spin, and went to install my NVIDIA drivers using the instructions on RPM fusion. I have done this process before, but for some reason, NVIDIA decided it needed an active X server to work. All this nonsense resulted in me just giving up on tiling window managers, and made me go over to just using XFCE, which I chose for its lightweights and also for the near infinite customization.
Hi. Just try Bluefin from project universal blue. Is based on Fedora Silverblue but with everything need for a better experience with drivers and multimedia codecs. Also is image based and with the benefits of an immutable system, very stable indeed. I’m been running it since January and is been the best Linux experience that I have so far, in my opinion is the future of Linux.
I personally use Waterfox or Mercury. They both are Firefox forks.
Seems horribly complicated. Why wouldn't you just use Synology's built-in Glacier Backup app?
The reason is that the Glacier backup app doesn't support all of the glacier storage classes and you can't use the cheapest storage class. So the glacier app is definitely easier, but will cost quite a bit more in the long run.
