Conscious Quilting

Welcome to Conscious Quilting.
Hello! My name is John, and I have been quilting since 2005. It began as occupational therapy following the death of my father. I found that as I was creating my quilts, I was far more in love with quilting them than with piecing them. From there, I began exploring free motion quilting, and in short order bought my first mid arm quilting machine. For years, I only knew how to quilt with a moveable machine, but when I started teaching classes, I realized I needed to learn more about quilting on a domestic sewing machine. I have come to love quilting on domestic just as much as I enjoy working on a longarm.
I approach quilting as a type of active meditation, using it as a way to calm and center myself. Many of my videos are intended to help bring a sense of calm to my viewers. Many others are intended to help instruct you in free motion quilting.
I hope you enjoy your time with me. Thank you so much for watching, subscribing and sharing!

Sped up View of Mctavishing to brighten your day!
I just discovered you last night and watched a couple of the getting started you tubes. So I'm on today from Houston. I'm trying to learn how so I can quilt a 40 x 40 sampler we did in a class.
It’s beautiful John, hope to see you back soon. I enjoy your teaching tutorials!..I also like Kingstar metalics too! A good choice!..
Wowowow … looks stunning, 🎉
Blue Springs, MO (KC area)
Being a leftie, I struggle with drawing with my left hand. I find it much easier to draw with the sewing machine. I was happy to see that you are a leftie, and you don't drag the ham of your hand through your work. Yes, I know, practice, practice, practice...
Beautiful quilting.
Very helpful, I really like this edge to edge design. I will be using it for sure!..Do you have any other edge to edge planned?
Not at the moment.....I kind of figured if you have the basics and can execute them, you can adapt it to other designs.
Very helpful. Thank you.
That is really stunning. How did you get the shading in the flower petals?
The flower itself is a pronted panel. Dream Big from Hoffman Fabrics. I just quilted it.
Thanks for sharing. I look forward to all your videos.
Wow! That is beautiful. I like the impact the metallic thread makes in contrast to the shimmer from the embroidery thread.
This is SPECTACULAR!!! Anyone who has stitched by hand should be able to appreciate this. Thank you for gracing the world with your creativity 😊
This is beautiful!!!
You'd rather I NOT sing the Welcome Back Kotter theme, correct...?
Correct
King star metallic thread is from DIME. I like it too. Your big bloom is gorgeous!
Lol thanks. I had a bit of a brain glitch there
@@ConsciousQuilting Happens yo me all the time. Lol
Oooohhh....glittery.
Ooooh! This one gives a delicious chill. Hope you have an extended video in the works. It’s wonderful!
Thank you so much for this! I have several quilts for foster kids - flannel on the front, fleece fir the backing and this works perfectly!
Gorgeous
This is gorgeous!❤
Thought you'd sneak one by me, huh?!
Lol no, this is way sped up
Do you really quilt this fast or is it sped up? If fast, I'd love to see it at the speed you quilt
Terrific! Love it. Your photos showed the quilting very well. Thanks for sharing your process. Beautiful quilt ❤
Really love your quilting designs 👍
REALLY nice!
Are you using special scissors to cut the excess wadding away?
I used a small set of applique scissors.
Thank you 😊
I always wondered how to do this and now I know. Thanks John for a very clear demonstration and directions. Beautiful!
Fantastic! Thank you for the demonstration of your artistry😊
You are an expert at this "quilting thing"!! Loved the demonstration on this video. Thank you!
I remember when this was all the rage with quilters like Diane Gaudynsky.
The end result was so intricate ! This was a very interesting video. Thank you for the demonstration !
TY for showing this technique. Truly beautiful quilting!
ooOOHHhhhh....learning!
Thank you I will do. I did it the old way years ago
Thank You - this makes it a lot easier!
There is a point of too much but this isnt it, looks great!
This is how I like to quilt my quilts. Great job!!
I don’t think there’s no such thing as too much quilting! The more thread you use the heavier the quilt; less quilting means a fluffier quilt. So it’s a personal choice and maybe who you are gifting the quilt. Beautiful work on this quilt!♥️
Wow! So detailed, this.
I'm watching the video, from Michigan.
Thanks so much! Hope you keep recording these clips!
Beautiful - thank you so much for sharing this design!
Could negative space also include the center blue square despite the fact that it is a printed fabric?
Yep! It could be used that way.
Nice. Thank you. Looking forward to the border video.
Oh boy this is great! I have this quilt pattern do find it really inspiring on your thought processes. Looking forward to seeing more. Lol I wish I could just lay down feathers like you. Of course I know….practice practice practice 😊
Thank you for sharing your creative process, this step by step is exactly what I need, even if I reduce the quilting to simpler figures because I’m a beginner. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was going to ask, how does one decide what to quilt. So much work to risk ruining.
Cuz if you liked it then you should have put a feather in it...
This was super helpful, thank you. Can't wait for more instructional videos like this one!
