    Thank you for the tutorial. I have some questions please. I’d like to make something similar, but I don’t have a lot of material lying around, would 2.5mm be too thin for a case around half this capacity? I thought about wet forming the circular base and top, to avoid visible stitching, is there a reason you chose not to? Thank you

    • @SideStreetLeather
      @SideStreetLeather День тому

      Hi! 2.5 mm is probably okay if you don't mind it being a bit less rigid than the one shown. This is the main reason that I went with 5mm. You could use some reinforcement to provide more structure if needed. I stayed away from wet forming because of how thick the leather is. I would have only been able to create a small lip and I wouldn't have felt comfortable with only gluing it at that point which would have still required stitching, albeit in a much more difficult to stitch location.

      It is a thin thermoset resin. One popular brand is called Cactus Juice. It is very similar to what I used. It makes the wood more stable and helps minimize moisture content fluctuations in the wood.

    I’m thinking of using leather instead of flat elastic straps as well but I’m a bit concerned that the leather dye might bleed to my clothes. I live in a very hot and humid country and I do sweat a lot.

    Sir, where did you get your strap skiver?

    • @SideStreetLeather
      @SideStreetLeather Рік тому

      They are available on many ecommerce websites. I think Amazon has them for about $30 but they aren't very good except for very small pieces like I showed. It is cheap but you also only get what you pay for. I've since bought a bell skiver that I use exclusively. I know spending that much on a bell skiver isn't an option for everyone but it is worth the money. Looking back I would have told myself to get a French Skiver and practice with that instead of getting the strap skiver in the video.

    where did you get that cool ruler?

    • @SideStreetLeather
      @SideStreetLeather Рік тому

      The flexible one is a fabric tape measure which you can get at most hobby shops that sell fabric. The black one is an aluminum safety ruler that I bought online. It has a foam pad on the bottom to keep it from sliding and the tall edge keeps your fingers safe. I've seen them for sale on several leather supply websites, aliexpress, and amazon. I have a few other rulers that I used before this one but they never get used now.

I dye the edges after sanding with, 120, 240, 320, 400 and then apply dye on edges and then 1000 grit paper, then again dye, then burnishing with wood slicker, then again dye, after this tokonole and canvas... It gives me good looking edge🙏🏽

    • @SideStreetLeather
      @SideStreetLeather 2 роки тому

      Wow thank you! To be honest, I do not usually put dye in the stitch holes because it doesn't need it. With this particular stitch pattern and butt joint it pulls the leather towards the seam causing a wider opening. For most leather dyed at the tannery this isn't as big of a problem because the dye goes deeper into the leather. When you hand dye it stays very much on the surface. On normal stitching the holes also go all the way through instead of part way at an angle. Its like pulling back the aluminum foil seal on a yogurt container a little bit. When you do that you are going to see the yogurt but if you just poke a knife in straight up and down you probably won't see anything inside.
