    I wonder do they hand stitch the fabric back together after separating to get the desired stripe effect? I love the tee-sweater. The stripes are perfect!!

    I talked with several people--vintage dealers, retired curators--about the label. One possibility is that the label was given to dressmakers in another country when they bought the fabric and right to copy it. Another possibility is that it was the runway model and not custom made for the individual. There are so many things we don't know. When I first went to Paris in the early 1980s, some couture houses had model garments for sale in the basement. Perhaps they were put on them. It was fun to look at them, but I couldn't afford them.

    Patron orgional can also refer to the prototype dress made by the maison to show private clients or tradespeople. It is the model of the patron, being the creative director , and in this case most probably Marc Bohan. Having a number on the label most probably means it was reproduced for sale to a manufacturer, as you state.

    When I saw the dress in the first minute of the video I thought it had been constructed quite different. I could not fully comprehend the exact construction of the dress but it was definitely not what I thought. To my eyes it looked like one strap came down from the shoulder to the front, went through a slit in the front piece and from there went back up to the other shoulder. And that's how I would try to make it simpler. The two straps would be one loop and it would need one or two well hidden snaps on the top end of the slit in the front. So you could pull the loop over your head to the front, close the side zipper and shut the snaps around the loop. I think this way you could put it on and off yourself quite easily. (Does this description make sense? English is not my native language.) Of course that's just what I think, an absolute beginner. But it would be interesting to know what experienced people say. Could it work that way?

    I am impressed with the craftsmanship but seems extremely complicated just for the sake of being complicated and labor intensive. I do like the idea of bias stays to prevent armhole stretching

    • @nikolaskoulountis6200
      @nikolaskoulountis6200 11 днів тому

      The complexity is not because of the Maison trying to rack up atelier hours to justify a high price. On the contrary, the prerogative of haute couture is that you can do what it takes, as long as it takes, and at whatever the cost , to get a most special final result. In order for this dress to look like it was just slipped over a body and casually twisted, but to perfection, all that underlying work goes on to make the outer garment fall smoothly, seemlessly and perfectly. Smooth drappy outers need to be supported internally to fit properly but also to stay in place. All the inner layers have to overlap without bulk, by gradient layering in steps. I have a few of these type of garments myself, and my heart sings whenever I handle and examine them....

  • @damenkapric586
    @damenkapric586 11 днів тому

    Fascinating! It would be interesting to see the dress on a body, in movement. The way I imagine it might look, and have the same behavior, I do not believe it would be profitable for ready to wear production. Drastic changes which would be needed would change it, well... drastically. But I am an amateur 🙂

    Stunning dress. You mentioned the first electric power plant in New York but made no reference as to why? Was the dress designed to sparkle in the bright glow of light bulbs? Or did she just request that the dress incorporated the design of a lightening bolts in relation to the novelty of electricity?

    Hi Claire, thank you for sharing your knowledge and educating us about the technicalities of haute couture. May I ask if elastics can be use as alternative to Petersham ribbon for stays

    • @claireshaeffer7616
      @claireshaeffer7616 28 днів тому

      Generally, no. Elastic is heavier and it will lose its elasticity. Also, it doesn't contribute the soft roll.

    • @noeljordanracca723
      @noeljordanracca723 5 днів тому

      Thank you very much for answering my question. May I kindly ask if there is alternative material that I can use if Petersham ribbon is not available? Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated

    • @claireshaeffer7616
      @claireshaeffer7616 4 дні тому

      @@noeljordanracca723 Petersham is a crisp ribbon usually made of cotton and/or rayon. It is also called grosgrain or milliner's ribbon. There is a polyester grosgrain that you could use maybe even satin ribbon. Both the polyester ribbon and satin ribbon are softer so they might roll when worn, but when that's the only ribbon available, you can use it.
