Know how many gallons of water are in a pond!
Thank you for these suggestions… your video was timely as I have a small leak in my pondless waterfall….
Awesome video, interesting to see how you built some parts of this pond, and nice that they now have those synthetic boards for decking, don’t think they had this back in the 90’s, when I built my patio deck next to our small pond, not over my small liner pond back in San Antonio, Texas, it was basically a liner put in a 10 X 14 foot hole my son and I dug out, and placed the liner in, but what was cool was I found some large half moon stones to line the outside of it over the liner edge, but the good part was it actually helped us to sale our home and we moved to Georgia, and found out by the neighbors next to this house when visiting they told us that the buyers through everything in the hole and buried it , maybe they could not maintain it, that was a very sad moment for us, and such a waste 😱😱
Thank you!
🙂
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us.
Thank you for watching! I hope it helped you.🙂
Thank you Chris. Was pleasantly enjoyed to wake up and see you covered this topic. Your advice helped a lot for my project next spring Thanks again.
Thank you for the recommendation! Great idea. I'm glad it helped you out!🙂
I appreciate you soooo much!
great info! You think of everything!!!
I'm trying!
This is exactly the video I needed!!!
I am a 45 year old woman building a 4000 gallon pond by myself. It’s been a year. Still not finished we get heavy rain in Georgia and your videos have been a game changer for me. Thank you friend!
Nice, Thank you for your support.
Thank you for the great video, Chris! Is the 4” bottom drain you mentioned in the video pvc or abs? I just bought 2 after watching your video and want to use the correct cement for them. Thanks again!
It's black like ABS, but it feels mor like a plastic. I have always used Heavy Duty PVC glue without any issues.
@@jerseyshorepondscapesvideos thank you, sir!
Covered a lot of great points no one mentions in these diy vids- especially the check valve and back flush valves. Thx for the tips!
Thank you for watching, I'm glad that it helped you.
Great Information on quarantining. I have a 110gal quarantine tank with lots of aeration, basic filter, heater and it’s netted over the top. Never thought I would need one, until I did. It wasn’t expensive if you compare the cost of just one koi, let alone a whole pond of koi. Recently bought a couple new koi and they went straight into the quarantine tank. Very glad I have it because one of the koi became sick after just 3 days. Now I’m only treating the quarantine tank instead of my whole pond. Just goes to shows you never know and you can never be too cautious.
Awesome, you're very prepared. Nice!🙂
Are you familiar with a company named and product called Liquid Rubber? It sells for 99.00 a gallon. I'm not sure of the quality.
I have not seen that one, but many are very similar.
I use the cheat code for mulch get the rubber mulch stays black, brown, red, blue or what ever color you get for 10 years and can put plants in the ground . Been using it for years and it works. Oh if you get the nugget form not the shredded you never have to worry about the rain washing it away. Always looks nice plants do just fine in it.
thanks, nice to know.
Is gravel in a pond a form of bacterial filter?
Not really, unless the water is passing through it, circulating around it. it does provide surface area for bacteria to grow on, but it sediment builds up in it, that could kill off some of the bacteria.
Does foaming mean a lack of beneficial bacteria?
It could be somewhat, but it's mostly a buildup of organic waste in the water or fish laying their eggs.
Isn't the job of the bacteria to break down that organic matter?
So benefit is aggressive growth ? Will the roots grow and clean nutrients?
Do they filter or clean the ponds of algae?
All plants help to absorb some nutrients out of the water that can help to "starve" the algae.
Just planted this in a new aquarium with about 6 other types of plants and somehow its the only plant turning yellow/brown. I hope it bounces back as i thought it would be the ine to do better than all the others.
That's strange, Parrots feather is usually pretty hardy. Give it some time.
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you, I hope that the video helped you out, and answered some questions.
what does rinse do?
Rinse basically flushes out the dirty water from the tank without mixing up all of the beads from the bottom.
Do you have any videos of setting up a ground filtration with out gravel? I’m trying to learn everything I can about building a pond it’s my project next year
Check out the videos that I have on Gravity Fed Filter Systems.
Great video thanks allot
Thank you for watching.🙂
Really helpful video. I particularly enjoyed the tip about pushing a piece of liner through the hole to have a dry piece in behind. That’s simple but clever!
Thank you, I've done it enough to learn little things like that that can help.
Thank you for the information. I'm late for getting it going but gonna give it a try. My biggest problem is tall pondweeds coming to the surface despite three gallons of Aqua Shade every year. 😥
I don't think that the Barley straw will have an effect on plants, it's mostly for "Green Water" algae.
For anyone wondering, this works really well.
Thank you. thanks for supporting what I talk about an this video. It has worked well for me.
@@jerseyshorepondscapesvideos I was skeptical at first. My son and I did the work and the very next day it rained from 11am to 8pm. If something was going to go wrong, this rain event would cause it. Well, I’m happy to say the liner hasn’t budged an inch. In fact I can see the liner being suctioned to the bottom of the pond.
I bought a uv light for my 1000 gallon pond and it didn’t a dang thing to clean the green pea soup water. I want to try one again but I’m kind of hesitant to go through it again.
What size UV did you buy? What size pump are using? How long has it been on? The UV may take some time if the pond is really green, or if the flow rate is too slow through it. Otherwise, it will work.
My coworker has a blue duck 😂
That's funny 🙂 Luckily, it won't hurt the duck.
@@jerseyshorepondscapesvideos It's true! She looks very funny though, she's white normally , so now she's very very blue XD
I've suggested pond plants to help shade the water column, they at least won't color change his ducks.
Thank you for this info! I’m a big fan of the plants with the nickname “money plant”, which surprisingly… is a lot!! I only have two left for my collection, this one and Lunaria, the latter which I am picking up seeds for this weekend. This one will have to wait… I want to make a self contained pond for it, that will probably be a project for when I actually have a house. I’ve taken over the apartment as it is with plants LOL. But I love learning ahead of time!
Nice, sounds like a plan 🙂
Does it need soil to grow or can it survive just planted directly in gravel on the margins of the pond?
It may be more winter hardy in soil.
perhaps more importantly that spray foam deteriorates and pollutes the environment...PLEASE CHECK OUT INFORMATION ON PLASTIC IN OUR BODIES AND IN OUR FOODS....thank you
Yes, agreed. Good point! Thank you
Lovely video. Good to know about the prolific nature of the water hyacinth. I was considering taking the extraneous bits and cooking them. Looks like that's what I'll have to do...if I can buy them in my state, that is.
Thank you for watching.
I really like how you speak in simple terms so everyone can understand. And showing examples of the items you’re talking about is extremely helpful. Great information. Thank you
Thank you for watching, glad that it helped.
Cement, sand and gravel = concrete Cement and sand = mortar
How much cure time for concrete in a water feature? Not concerned about strength in this particular application . . . more, just concerned about surface . . . i.e. don't want concrete to dissolve away by exposure to water too soon.
Ok
Very pretty Sounds like white water rapids that water is coming off there fast-
i just put in new water in pond build and can see little worms whats going on.
How far does a gallon go? I'm doing an 750ish gallon pond 4x8 inside pond diameter roughly little over 3 feet deep. How much would I need? Would a 45mil EPDM liner be a better option?
I would like to see the plumbing I haven't been able to find that video. Sorry, to bug I just can't find it. Do you bury the filter tank? Probably not if there are valves.
Amazing in-depth explanation! Thanks
Great advice as always
In USA PERHAPS YES BUT FISH NEED 6 FOOT DEEP HERE IN EUROPE
Amazing video sir! It took me awhile to find you but glad I did. I am new to pond building and have some yard drainage issues to address as well but this will work perfect for what I need while I have the pond drained. Thank you soooo much.
DEEPER THE WATER THE MORE STABLE EVERYTHING STAYS. LESS ALGAE AS WATER STAYS COOLER IN HOT SUMMER.
Very true, I agree.
I got a light net, heron went straight through it
Wow, that's crazy. Sorry to hear that. I wonder why the net didn't discourage him. I guess there is always a chance, but I have had very good success with a light net. I guess that it may also depend on how available other food sources are for him.
Amazing video a lot of info thank you , is there a way I can grab some papyrus plant seeds from you if possible ?
Sorry, I don't grow them. I have just purchased plants for some of my clients.
Great information, as usual😊 thank you
Thank you for watching the video. I hope it helped you in some way.
I have had my my 160 gallon garden fountain for over 13 years and have used a UV filter, all this time, and am just seeing string algae for the first time , I spent the day today and removed it from my 160 gallon pond liner using a long thin putty knife , that has fish in it , and looks good now, should I start adding salt and what kind ? I found your barley extract on Amazon and thinking of using that versus the barley straw bales , please advise me at this point, thanks
Hi, the barley straw extract is good because it is easy to apply we don't have to wait for the straw to start rotting, and caused a mess the salt is good too, we typically add a pound and a half per hundred gallons for the algae. So about 2 lb should be good you can do both at the same time the UV light has no effect on the string algae, because it is not being exposed to the UV it simply grows on the liner and on rocks
I actually went out yesterday and scraped it all out with a wide spackling knife, and a net I have a 160 gallon pond liner under my 3 tiered fountain with no plants , but I have comet fish should I still go ahead and apply the IPA pond salt after this and at what ratio, it is clear now , and still using my UV filter ? Thanks for your replies 👍😀, still have some barley bails floating around in there , need to clean my tiered 3 layer bowls of algae , not running the fountain top spillover till the pond is ok , awaiting your response, I am a subscriber with you with helpful responses, Thanks
@@zabajart 1.5 lbs per hundred gallons is good, but since you have no plants you can increase the salt level if you want, perhaps 2-2.5 lbs/100 gallons.
@@jerseyshorepondscapesvideos is that still ok even though I have fish in it, I have removed 98 % of the string algae should I still apply all that salt since I removed most of it ? Or wait to see if it comes back then apply it, Interesting I have never seen that string algae in my small pond, until this year, I have had this pond over 12 years
