The purpose of this channel is to share my Martial Arts experience, knowledge and research. Martial Arts practice has different aspects that benefit different people with different goals. Although my focus is on combative themed training methods, I also appreciate the "Art" aspect and will share some of that subject as well. There is too much division and tribalism in the Martial Arts world. I believe in, and have personally experienced the benefit of training in all these different interpretations. Let's keep it positive in the spirit of brotherhood.
Knife Fighting Q & A
In this video I go over some frequently asked questions by students and subscribers regarding knife fighting trining drills vs. real wrold application. This is a very nuanced subject so I go over some general explanations from my own personal experiences and other reliable sources on real world edged weapons violence.

Can you post a video about knife defenses aganst empty hand, different fast retracting stabs. Over head, slash, ice pick stab, grab the t shirt and stab continually. Thanks
Very well said, sir. However, Mr. Parker and Kwai Sun Chow were adamant about their relationship with Mitose. Mitose and Chow were business partners and did not have a student-teacher relationship. This relationship was born out of necessity, as Chow was illiterate and could neither read nor write. Mitose was the "educated" one who handled the business of the Self-Defense Club while Chow did the teaching. A noted "con" man, Mitose, ended up dying in prison, convicted of murder. Chow was credited by Mr. Parker for creating the modern concept of street self-defense. Still, because he was illiterate, his classes lacked direction and continuity, and it was Mr. Parker who codified his lessons on 3x5 cards, which later formed the basis for his first book, "Kenpo Karate," published in 1961 by Iron Man Industries. Other than his Chinese upbringing, Chow's major influence was Henry Okazaki, who went on to create Dan Zan Ryu Jiu-jitsu, and another notable student, Wally Jay, who went on to create Small Circle Jiu-jitsu. This hybrid mixture of training gave us the "karate" reference coupled with "Kenpo" (Chuán Fa) to give us his "Kenpo-Karate." It was said by Ed Parker the naming was also to distance himself from Mitose, who called his art "Kempo-Jiu-Jitsu." This hybrid approach and mixing of eclectic styles also gave us the first American Mixed Martial Art, kajukenbo, initiated by Chow's senior student Adriano Emperado, his brother Joseph, and three others. While the Japanese Jiu-jitsu/karate influence was obvious in the beginning, it was Mr. Parker's exposure to the Chinese Arts in Northern and Southern California that brought him back to the roots of the art under Ark Wong as a student, and he was influenced greatly by another Ark Wong student, Haumea "Tiny" Lefiti who was a transfer Mok Gar Black Sash transfer student from Taiwan probably more than any other. "Tiny" went on the create the original Limalama with Tui'mamao "Tino" Tuiolosega,. Other influences include James H. Woo and his San Soo, James W. Woo, who taught in the Pasadena School for Mr. Parker and contributed greatly to his second book, "Secrets of Chinese Karate" in 1963, as well as Lau Bun of Northern California who was credited with introducing Bruce Lee to Mr. Parker. I might also add, although not generally known, that Dan Inosanto was also a student of Ark Wong before becoming a Parker Student and later a training partner with Bruce Lee, with Danny being the one who taught Bruce Lee weapons that included his own Filipino Arts background. - Dr. Ron Chapél
Thank you so much for those insights and information! There are so many things that many of us looking from the outside are not aware of.

Elvis Presley is the most famous person in American Kenpo.
I remember as a little kid, watching him perform techniques on stage. At that time I had no idea it was Kenpo.
And that’s very very sad that the most famous Kenpo guy was an overweight drug addict
Great stuff Mike , thanks. When I see even trained fighters reach down or out to block kicks with their hands I know what's coming soon. I get that it's our human instinct but that's what training is for , to rewire those instincts . I like that's its the same basic concept on both sides .

If you want an efficient fight system, modern sport muaythai is the only way to go. Ignore muay boran.
Why not?
@@myeyesaredrymylove Muay boran is not modern up to date, Teachers of muay boran never had real fight experience at professional level.
@@sportmuaythaiv1045 So every Muay Boran technique is ineffective? The kicks, elbows, knees? Everything Muay Boran related is ineffective?
@@myeyesaredrymylove Lol! Even a child can bloody a friend's nose. However, muay boran is not efficient compared to modern sport muaythai. In striking martial art, distance and fight rhythm (timing) are two most important factors. Muay boran training system doesn't give you these.
@@sportmuaythaiv1045 I will continue to train Muay Boran techniques. I will develop distance and fight rhythm in modern Muay Thai gyms. I will mix them up.
25 Years ago muaythai camps did not open door to non fighters. Things have changed. Fairtex was the pioneer in opening door to interested foreign muaythai students. To learn proper muaythai, it's best to come to Thailand. There are several good camps all over the country that train foreigners. My recommendation is to look for camp that are owned by a Thai, preferably an exfighter, that prepare successful professional fighters. Most of these camp owners love muaythai, and appreciate foreign students who will promote muaythai to the world. They will teach every thing they teach their fighters, Nothing is kept secret. Regretfully, most foreign owned camps charge very high fees. I would not recommend any. As for muayt boran aka ancient muaythai, if you want real efficient fighting system, shy away from these.
Ed Parker's stuff will get you killed in the real world. There are reasons Gracie Jiujitsu caught on and Ed Parker Kempo is a joke.
GJJ gets dominated by judo and wrestling. Doesn't make it a joke, though.
@@JDoe-gf5oz Gracie Jiu Jitsu does well against judo and wrestling.
@@RiseofTaitoShirei lmao
Is this more of a frame or a punch?
It's both since you enter with your forearm cutting over the opponent's forearm and riding up to the face, and your forearm will have a frame from a slight bend at your elbow. The punch/frame is powered by the body. Basically you are entering with a frame that rides the forearm to hit
Hi Mike, at the 10 minutes Mark you're discussing the elbow and kicks. I remember when I first broke my foot in training. Doing roundhouse kicks, following knees from a neck clinch. Stepping to and turning my partner round whilst holding their neck, spinning and releasing them, quickly followed by a hard round kick onto two pads. My foot went round the pad and hit the guys elbow. My shin kick was sound but my foot was knackered. He didn't tuck his elbow in behind the pad. My foot went purple and black in the days after. for sure broken and struggling to walk. Some weeks later he kicked my elbow in the same way. He ruined his foot too. The foot is no match for the elbow. It's all fun until it's not fun! Lol!
Lol, you're right about that! It's ironic how your partner got the same thing happen. Using the elbow to purposely block high kicks works very nicely.
Looks like Filipino and Chinese martial arts foundational moves.
Yes. It shares similarities.
You take angle from outside what about from.inside ? And how to anticipate his jab comin in ?
It is an outside technique since it uses the forward pressure to close the opponent's arm into his center. Anticipation of the jab comes from a variety of factors including the opponent's telegraphic movements, rhythm of his jab, and your ability to stay at the fighting measure. In that fighting measure you can control the delivery of many techniques because you are standing one step further than you can touch his chin with your jab. This is done to control distance and make it easier for you to hit the opponent because he feels he his far from reaching you and will step forward to hit you.
I found being a boxer the ref gave me a warning??!
It depends on what that ref let's you get away with, or he believes it's a foul
Was it a warning for "pushing"? Or for "no elbow strikes"? Because a boxing ref may interpret this move as something like that. I assume that was amateur boxing? It's basically a variation of the long guard. You would have to make it QUICK so it looks more like a jab of sorts. Half of boxing is about dealing with the referees. :)
@@athenry I agree. This is also called a cutting punch. It's like punching the punch but you slightly angle 45 and your punch enters and slides from the opponent's forearm up to the face. Always good when the referee is on the other side.
can this be used in muay thai matches? I mean does it deduct any points or is it fine to use
This should not be considered a foul in a match. It happens fast and it is a boxing technique that has many variations
Glue 2 frizbees together. Cool?
Professor Chow was a practitioner of Shotokan, before Mitose. He took his students, which probably included Parker, to Hotel Street, to test techniques against gi's and sailors. Who were probably drunk.
So many great stories that were shared during those times. I herd similar accounts about other masters taking it to the streets to test skills.

Thank you for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙏
My original instructor kept telling me to stop the Judo moves for my first 4 years in Kenpo. He said there was no Judo in Kenpo. Our head instructor, and direct student of Mr. Parker, would praise my use of Judo whenever he held a seminar in our dojo. I could see it throughout the whole system, but because our head instructor hadn't taught it to Sensei yet, Sensei assumed it wasn't allowed. Doesn't make sense that Judo wouldn't be allowed in such an inclusive style. In an online video, our head instructor said he had a discussion with Mr. Parker about Judo because both of them had Black Belts in Judo. Be patient...have an open mind.
Thank you for sharing your experience. The inclusion of Judo into striking arts opens a whole new world. Very complimentary to Kenpo.

Agreed, the most important decision a person can make in Martial Arts is who they choose as an instructor, always do your research.
Yes, it is extremely important once the commitment is made to learn 🙏
Man when it comes to martial arts Mike Soto knows what he is talking about and it is sad that a lot of martial arts instructors of today (McDojo instructors) don't take martial arts teaching seriously like Mr. Soto does. I have a black belt in Tang Soo Do karate and I would throw my black belt in the trash can and start over again to learn from Mr. Soto because the martial arts instructors where I live (Augusta, Georgia) they are a joke and they don't take martial arts seriously but they take getting your money for teaching martial arts seriously and it is sad and it is wrong.
Thank you for the kind words 🙏. It is very unfortunate that so many instructors take advantage of students and only see them as dollar signs instead of focusing on maximizing the student's potential.
Not many people have much in the way of street fight experience. Even fewer of us have trained and practiced TCMA for decades on top of street fight experience. We're in our 60s or older and our time is over. TMA is entering a new age of small clubs, few members, and pursuing excellence sans fanfare, or formal recognition. We will always exist as the Human Condition is naturally violent.
Very true. Thank you for your comment 🙏

I'm a Nidan in American kenpo.
Welcome to the channel 🙏
Blessings in an abundance of the faith. I salute you. 😘🙏 Grace and peace be unto you and to this place. God bless you. Thank you. 😊Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and personal saviour??? I do. 😊
Got to 2nd Dan after 15 years in American Kenpo. It really works, I did a lot of full contact fighting, and used it twice in self defense.
Ed Parker moved so fast. I remember watching him on one of the tv epsidoes who's name I don't recall at the moment, and I was so impressed that I would look forward to his appearance on the small screen again. American Kenpo is still highly impressive to this day.

Never used gloves as a karateka. Turns out it's the best choice after all.
