Minnesota Maple Syrup, Trees and a Maple Syrup Taste Test
Join me on a walk with my dad through a Minnesota forest
We’re discussing making maple syrup and talking about how to identify trees…with a little family history thrown in, and some footage from a childhood Minnesota History Project that dates back to the early 1990s.
Later I compare the taste of Tree Juice maple syrup with my dad’s homemade artisan maple syrup, and then I taste a sample box of their infused maple syrup.

    Great video! I hate AI because it basically steals art from artists without giving them credit. As far as making your own art based off of AI art, I'm torn. On one hand, artists are usually inspired from others, which is cool, as long as it's not blatant stealing. But AI is bad to begin with, so maybe don't use it at all. But the art you've done that you showed here is awesome! You do good stuff!

      I won't try to find out where your local farmer's market is. Local meat producers often set up at them to sell their product. Otherwise the state you live in, or local groups, may have an online resource with local meat, produce, and food (like baked & canned goods) listed.

    My sweet 2 year old boy just spent 3 nights in vet hospital on an IV with a cath and he was dripping some blood and leaving pee spots in the first hours after he got home but now nothing. He goes to litter and gets nothing out. Hes refusing any food at all including the special food the vet gave me for urinary issues. Hes not drinking even though we have a fountain. All vet gave was antibiotics and Iv fluid. I make 30k q year and am single so you can imagine how many more 1000 dollar vet visits I can afford. I love him so much. I am afraid I am going to lose him.

Im also going to ask if vet thinks he will end up needing surgery because by time I drain my savings having a cath put in multiple times I wont have the money for the surgery. Some shelters I've talked to say if you can catch them (in my case stray barn cats in town) to find a TNR (Trap Neuter Release) program and bring them in. There's a place in the city near me that will fix stray and barn cats for a low cost so they can be returned "to the wild" and not procreate. There may be some programs like that near you. If you're able to catch it and take it in to a vet be prepared for it to like you more and hang out more on your property. And thank you for the lovely comment. I try to be thorough and give people as much good information as I possibly can. 😊

    in wyoming total final weight (what you actually get), for half 5.9-6.4, for whole 5.3, including processing fee. For example whole cow of angus half/half jersey steer (thats a breed) cost 2000, for 378 pounds final weight. Half of cow, usually 179-240lbs depending on breed goes for 1150-1500. The whole 1800-2100$ and you get 338-401lbs. Comes all vacuum sealed, frozen, never fed grain. Found it on becker family stock farm, its near Thermopolis, WY.

    I always use reference for my own work. As pure reference material, I see no problem with it. AS ART, I have a big problem with it. As you pointed out: Attribution and ownership. AI art uses the internet to create work. In this case, Internet = other peoples work.

  • @BrianPenny
    @BrianPenny 5 місяців тому

    To answer some of your questions. 1. If you write the prompt, the output is still public domain in the United States. That was decided specifically by the US Copyright Office in their March 2023 public guidance for AI copyright in response to the copyright filing for Zarya of the Dawn by Kris Kashtanova. She was granted the copyright for her wording and the arrangement of the images but not the individual images. Consider AI outputs like rocks--you can make whatever you want with that rock, but you didn't make the rock. you only own the way you organized the rock and any designs you drew on top of it. In the case of your painting, you own that painting, but people could still use the public domain AI output you used as reference to make their own paintings. If you registered a copyright on the painting without disclosing an AI reference was used, you could lose your copyright in the event of a lawsuit between you and a copycat who also made a painting based on the exact same image. 2. In that vein, we have "learn like a human" and in absolutely no case is that accurate to say about any machine learning algorithms nor models. To paraphrase Francois Chollet, the deep learning head at Google who invented the Keras deep learning library among other contributions, to think AI is in any way thinking like a human is the same as watching a cartoon on your Netflix and thinking there's actually little people living their lives in a world inside your monitor. Deep learning models take 1000 images of a rose and find the statistical mean within those images, storing that value as a "concept" (represented on the hard drive as a numerical range) rather than each individual file. This allows for a lossy compression database, and all you are doing by typing in a prompt is retrieving one number within that numerical range. It's much more accurate to compare it to a ZIP file than the human brain, which is much more complicated. To paraphrase Yann LeCun, the head of AI at Meta, in order to develop an AI that can equal a human brain, we first need to design an AI model equivalent to an earthworm, and we are still a LONG ways from that. 3. The reason people say "learns like a human" is because they are parroting marketing buzzspeak used by people like Sam Altman and Mira Murati at OpenAI, David Holz at Midjourney, etc. These CEOs earn billions of dollars promoting "learns like a human" marketing because it excuses their mass theft of people's data. The current lawsuits against AI companies boil down to whether the inputs are fair use, and anybody who says one way or the other firmly is guessing at this point. It will be up to a judge and the USCO. The pivotal cases to follow include Developers vs GitHub, Artists vs Midjourney/Stability AI/DeviantArt, Getty vs Stability AI, NY Times vs OpenAI, Authors vs OpenAI/Meta. These cases will set the standard on how the courts choose to interpret Copyright law for AI, and in the meantime, the USCO is going to issue two more sets of guidelines this year with more clarity. Other than that, one small addition to the culture thing--it's true that these machines only produce the statistical mean of culture. Specifically, David Holz said this week in his open office hours that he hard coded midjourney outputs to appeal directly to a 38-year-old man. He said there are more people over 45 than under 20 and that the rarest demographic on Midjourney is a 20-year-old woman. He also said you're more likely to meet a 65-year-old woman than a teenage boy on Midjourney. All this is to say the bias is very real and that statistical mean has a very specific demographic. He didn't specify if it was a cisgendered American white male, but that's a good bet. Everybody outside of that demographic will struggle to have their culture represented. Native American art, for example, won't look right at all. The brush strokes won't match, and it won't follow the same meaningful pattern. Their culture is erased even if you attempt to invoke it by using "in the style of" and using all the right words for their styles and artists. It will still be a machine's interpretation of what a 38-year-old man wants to see in that culture. It's not just that AI presents a monoculture--it is that it contains no culture itself. For example, google the news about Ketih Harring's Unfinished Painting to see what AI interpreted for one of the most iconic American artists of the late 20th century. Not only did "finishing" the painting destroy the point of the work, but the way it attempted to mimic his style in the AI version looks like a mangled mess compared to the intricate human designs he used to represent his cultural heritage.

    I think ethical questions can be addressed by saying it was based on an AI reference and the reference pieces that were used or suggested to AI. It is still art. The emotion and unique charecteristics of the artist make it unique and original

    What about ribs and the belly seems like you were missing some cuts. You might get it cheaper if you just ask for the primal cuts. The cut and grind what you want.

      I did choose. I didn't choose ribs or belly and opted for more ground beef. As I stated in the video I do plan to buy an entire uncut half carcass next time since I've processed whole deer before - I just don't currently have the physical space needed for such a thing right now. 🙂

    Did you buy a fore quarter or hind quarter or a 1/4 share of a whole carcass ? Sirloin comes from the rear, chuck or arm comes from the front. So if you get both you must have a share of a whole side.

    • @WithFrankie
      @WithFrankie 4 місяці тому

      1/4 share. As mentioned, I picked which cuts I wanted. They came from different quarters of the cow.

    Bearded Butcher videos are awesome. FWI, newest problem for beef production is Bird flu now proven to infect cattle and will result in many herds being destroyed. And we just thought beef had gotten expensive. Prepare to eat bugs...

    • @WithFrankie
      @WithFrankie 6 місяців тому

      Absolutely! I've been following the avian flu - beef crossover for over a year and I just read a piece this week about how it's been inspecting people on farms where the cows have caught it. If i had more space I'd be getting another half a cow for the freezer immediately at current prices. I'm curious about bugs. I know there's a load of them in our processed food already. They allow more insects & bugs in some stuff than I'm sure the average American consumer would be grossed out by.
