Butterflies & Birds in the Backyard
United States
Приєднався 22 гру 2011
We have a Certified Wildlife Habitat and I garden for butterflies, hummingbirds, and pollinators in my backyard. I also feed birds and count them in the winter for Project FeederWatch. I garden along the south east Texas Gulf Coast south of Houston in zone 9. In early 2021 I decided I wanted to create butterfly, hummingbird, and bird spaces in my backyard.
I invite you to join me on this gardening journey!

December Pollinator Garden | #butterfly #hummingbird 🦋🐛 | Texas Gulf Coast Zone 9b
Late fall and early winter here along the Texas Gulf Coast has been mild. Plants are still growing and flowering, pollinators are out and about foraging, and the winter birds like the American Goldfinch are visiting.

October is usually a nice month for us in the garden along the Texas Gulf Coast. Sometimes though gardeners are burned out due to our hot and humid summers. But if you can strategically plant with fall in mind, gardens can look so good at this time of year too. Join me as I look through what plants are producing in the middle of October.

The very first garden bed we installed in the backyard for our pollinator garden needs work due to plant loss. We had a water main break from contractors digging along the road and when the repair was completed, there was a bit of sediment that flowed through the water lines. Unfortunately some of our drip irrigation got plugged and plants in our north bed did not get watered properly in the he...

During this time of year, gardens typically do well along the Texas Gulf Coast. The temperatures have cooled from the summer heat, even though it might still be in the low 90s during the day. Nighttime temperatures have also cooled from the hot and sticky conditions. Now we might even see nighttime temps in the 60s! Join me as I walk through my September pollinator garden. 😊

The Bloomify series of #lantana is my absolute favorite lantana for our Zone 9 pollinator garden. Why do I like it so much? Well, it is a sterile lantana that grows in a mound versus how lantana usually grows, which is what I like to call in a "sprawling" habit. And it is a perennial for us along the Gulf Coast of Texas which is an added bonus! A second benefit is because this series is sterile...

Having two types of plants in your garden is key to bringing in the butterflies. Those plants are 1) host plants and 2) nectar plants. Join me as I talk about each type of plant so you can attract butterflies to your garden.

Join me as I walk through some of the butterfly host plants we have in our pollinator garden, and especially the Senna Alata (Cassia Alata) also known as the Candlestick Tree. It is the host plant to the yellow butterflies along the Texas Gulf Coast. I have seen quite a few of the Cloudless Sulfur butterflies in the yard lately, so I have wondered if I have been hosting any of these caterpillar...

It currently is hot and humid with high heat indexes but no rain. For all the rain we had gotten this summer, the garden is needing supplemental water right now. My husband and I installed drip irrigation ourselves during the summer of 2022, but I still need to hand water plants in the garden like the hanging baskets. I have found as I get older I don't like to drag a hose around the yard. A li...

My Blue Porterweed self seeds and spreads. How do you prevent unwanted volunteers ? I am in SW Houston , Tx. Thank you.
Wonderful garden in December! Merry Christmas!🎄
Love the video, learned so much. When do you cut back your salvias?
Thank you for taking care of the butterflies, humming birds/ birds and other small ones such as the little lizards etc, I am in zone 9 and does the same with a smaller back yard. Loved that you left the back up for winter cover for soo much life. You have a BEAUTIFUL GARDEN. Subscribed❤❤❤
This is so beautiful and inspiring ! Time for me to plant more natives !
Have a very Merry Christmas!!
So good to see you post! Your porterweed is so big! Wow. I LOVE the salvia madresnsis. It tends to like part sun correct?
👍👍👍
Curious as to when this one was recorded? Central Florida had three nights of frosts/freezing last week (Dec 2-4) and the cold toasted most of my plants. Blue porterweed is knocked back about 25%. Dwarf Firebush has gone brown and crispy. Native firebush faired better (it is under the edge of a canopy) but is about ready to drop its leaves. Most of my salvias made it through though, as did the buddleias. But frustratingly, my plums and apples refuse tp go to sleep. Taking advantage of this time of year to get some dormant trees planted to add more structure and layers to the yard.
I'm sorry to hear you got those freezing temps! I recorded this video today (Dec. 10th). We have not had any temperatures below 40 degrees yet.
Hello neighbor 👋 Lake Jackson here 😊 Missed seeing you. Your garden still looks beautiful 😍 Wishing you a Blessed and Merry Christmas.
Hello neighbor! Thanks so much for your post! I wish you a Merry Cbristmas and wonderful holiday season too!
So beautiful!! I was missing your garden! I’m glad to know about violas vs pansies! I’m loving my roses this month! They all bloom beautifully in December. #Houston 😂
We can have such weird winter weather here in the Houston area. So far it has been mild ... I wonder how long that will last! Roses are so beautiful. My mother used to have beautiful rose gardens in her yard. I'm glad yours are blooming and you are enjoying them! Because they sure have to endure a lot in our summer heat and humidity. I prefer the larger flower size of the pansy. But the violas attract the butterflies. Of course not as well as major nectar producers like the porterweed. I notice the smaller butterflies on the violas.
I absolutely love your gardens. I live in North Dakota, zone 4. We are totally frozen here. I am going to start some of your plants from seed this Spring to see if I get more hummers and butterflies next summer. I do have native plants which do bring in so many pollinators. This past summer I increased my hummers by one, so now I have two. Hoping for more next summer.❤❤❤
We have relatives in North Dakota! One of our Aunts in N.D. plants lots of Zinnias each year and the hummingbirds just love them in her garden.
Zone 4- you're just torturing yourself!! ;'D Actually I guess watching gardening videos in the winter would be a good way to tide yourself over. :)
Your garden looks great! In South Carolina (8b) right after Thanksgiving we had temperatures in the low 20's for about a week. All my plants and flowers are gone. I'm already thinking about spring 2025.
I really enjoy garden planning for spring! We get spoiled here along the Gulf Coast because our gardens enjoy a long growing season. I get miffed if/when we do have a freeze. Lol! 😂 The last 3 years we have had hard freezes though, which is unusual for us.
Do you take your Christmas catus inside when it freezes?
Yes, I took it into the garage last winter when we had our one freeze. Otherwise it was outside hanging on a tree branch. I was so surprised it survived and then bloomed again this December!
@@ButterfliesNBirds Oh yes, they say that Christmas cactus can live for years. 😊But I didn't know if they could handle a freeze.
Interesting about the coleus color change, I didn’t wait long enough to find out, I pulled it!
I know! I was so disappointed in it all summer long. The color was so not what was advertised. It is interesting about the color change now, although it isn't vibrant.
❤❤❤🌷🌷🌷
😊
beautiful cheers from Australia
Thanks for watching from Australia! 😊
Thank you! I have one of each chrysalis and the temperatures are getting freezing. So you bring them in?
I brought mine it last year, but I'm not going to this year. They can overwinter outside here in zone 9b.
Crystal, you're making me nervous! While you are COMPLETELY allowed to take time off, it's enough out of character that I'm nervous you've gotten sick or injured in some way. I'm praying for you! I hope everything's alright! ❤
I am so sorry! My absence was unintentional. I was out of state visiting family and then I had the "garden Blahs", where I didn't think there was anything good for a video. And you are so right ... it was out of character for me!!! I really appreciate you checking in and I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are enjoying our weather. I hope to have a video up in the next few days! Blessings! 💖
@@ButterfliesNBirds Oh, yay!!!! That makes me so happy! Well, no worries- you deserve as many breaks as you want, for as long as you want. I was just getting nervous is all. Yes, our weather is so lovely right now! Happy holidays to you, too!
North of Austin Salvia M. Is 14ft tall with 33 "bloom brackets I have been waiting for ever but the cool front came through Wow mine needs Shade so both works. For perfect this North of Austin Salvia M. Blooms beautifully But you do need shade which has been my problem but I cover when winter comes It has spread everywhere. So glad you showed this beauty. Thank you
WOW ... yours is TALL! 😍 And that is a lot of bloom brackets!!! I bet they are just gorgeous!
How fast does this grow? Got mine accidentally cut to the base after mowing my lawn.
In the summer it is a fairly fast grower.
I would love to add this to my Papa garden I just love hummingbirds & betterflies . I allready have the sapphire purple one they are easy to grow
They really are easy to grow here ... and they do get very large in a growing season.
Hello Im in love with your porter weeds thank you for such a beautiful video please if you can could you harvest some of the red ones dry stalks and send me the seeds off each of the different varieties exempt the sapphire blue pleasssssssssssse lol😂 to my Papa address in Puerto Rico lol … Victor Moran HC05 Box 52023 Caguas PR 00725 just in a regular envelope thank you God bless you😇🤲🐑 thanks again for such a beautiful video Ive shared it with my family some have green thumbs too 😂
That is wonderful! Unfortunately, I don't save the dry stalks and I haven't tried growing them from seed yet. Have you grown them from seed?
@ hello how are you😇🤲🐑 God bless you …the stacks where the flowers grow has a tendency after a while of drying once dried fully harbest the seed pods you can check for them daily collect them. They are full of seeds for replanting. I collected them from my purple porter weed and planted the seeds I managed to grow sooo many Ive shared some plants with my family they have medicinal benefit’s for gut issues or diverticulitis sooo its not just favored with pollinators its the leaves are good for tea consumption for humans with gut issues . I love porter weed Ive spread so many throughout my land but its just one variety I have I did not know there was many varietys till I seen your beautiful video 🥰
Yes please save the dried stalks and get potting mix rubb the stalks apart over potting mix cover with a thin layer of potting soil water well . The best part is they grow fast ive planted mine in ground. Its such a joy to observe all the beauty of it and all the action from nature sorrounding it aughhhhh😇🥰
Please tell me what was the beautiful red plant right behind the superbena was it a celosia or an amaranth please tell me the variety name as i would love to get one
Thank you.
You're welcome! 😊
Hi Crystal, another great video. I, too, had canna lilies in my yard and did not like them. I think I'll fennel and the white veined Dutchman's pipe to my garden next year.
Hi! Did you have an issue with the Canna lilies getting eaten, or did you just not prefer the blooms? I didn't like the blooms, AND they just got eaten up. Some blooms are pretty, but the ones I had were small and so disappointing. Yes, the fennel is so wonderful for attracting the Eastern Black Swallowtails (parsley, dill, and rue works great too), and then the white veined Dutchman's pipevine for the gorgeous black Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies. It is so fun to have these butterflies in the yard all season.
I just love your garden and your info! I usually start planning in January when it’s too cold for me to get outside. I’m near Dallas. Sometimes my plans work out, sometimes not. Next year I know I’m going to have to do a lot more planting in pots, I’ve been in a power chair for years, and my back is not liking all the bending over to get to the ground. It’s been encouraging to see all that you plant in pots and they do great!
Yes, pots have worked well for me. The only thing is they require more water. So as long as you don't mind watering frequently, it should work great for you! 😊
I really appreciate your honesty about plants and gardening and how to plant what is productive in your garden. I have some Bronze Fennel and I noticed that it is reseeding also.
So sorry for the late reply! I am so happy I planted my replacement fennel in the late fall so it had time to establish before it gets cold. I am hoping it comes up nicely in early spring!
That Mexican Flame Vine is beautiful. I want to purchase one next Spring (2025). I saw a video yesterday and the presenter said that a yellow passion vine is a host plant for the Zebra Swallow tails. I thought that the host plant for the Zebras are Paw Paw trees.
I haven't seen a zebra swallowtails here yet ... but you are right, the pawpaw tree is its host. The passion vine is the host to zebra longwings. (I haven't seen them here either yet.)
I realize that our gardens perform differently depending on our zones and micro climates. I think my gardening zone is very similar to your gardening zone. I noticed that a lot of your annuals are very large plants and the same plants are stunted here. Butterfly bushes become large shurbs here over the growing season. And during the early Spring when it starts to come out of dormancy I prune it hard because the blooms form on new wood.
That is great you can grow butterfly bushes! We just get too much rain for them here. I don't have any luck with them year after year.
I’ve been thinking a lot about next season. Adding more of what worked this year. Like salvias. Gomphrena. Also want to try some plants from seed. Definitely more natives but want to be careful about size since I have such limited space. Still learning my way with roses. That’s been very challenging. Going to give it at least one more year. But probably going to get rid of a couple.
Sorry for the late reply! I haven't posted in awhile. It is great to be thinking now about what you want to plant next spring! 😍
I think your hot lips salvia looks like every one I’ve seen. My sense is that’s its growing habit. Granted it’s late in the season.
Lol ... yeah, I'm not a fan of Hot Lips salvia. It is funny how I wanted one so badly, but now that I have it and sees how it grows in my garden, well it is a "pass" for me.
Good morning… I was going to tell you I ended up ordering3 bronze fennel because my local nurseries did not have any.. I just came back to watch your video again and it looks like you purchased more than that so I’m hoping three will be enough to get started.. I am wondering about how much water do they need the area I have prepped to put them near my elephant ears and they get lots of water so do you think that will be OK? I’ve added five bags of topsoil, a couple of feet away from the elephant ears, so the ground is a few inches higher where I will be planting them.. thanks
I'm so sorry for my late reply! I haven't been on in quite awhile!!! How is your fennel doing? The fennel I planted in the late fall is doing very well here south of Houston. They don't need a lot of water in the winter, but they do need consistent water in the summer.
I myself love lantana couldn’t have enough of them.
Agreed!!! 😊
Hot lips salvia has white and red blooms when temperatures are cooler so spring and late fall. I prune it heavily in late winter and again in Mid May. Mine is looking messy again. This year, the rain from hurricane Beryl and afterwards followed by no rain for 36 days stressed Hot Lips. I planted mine in the back of red roses so it is not the feature in the red bed. The pollinators love it. John Fannick Phlox loves full sun. As long as the deer don’t visit my yard and munch on it, it blooms summer to frost if you deadhead it.
Thank you so much for the additional info!!! If I keep my hot lips salvia, I will also heavily prune it in the early spring.
Spot on regarding Butterfly Bush in the Houston area. The only variety that lived and flourished for more than 3 years was ‘White Profusion’. Nurseries rarely carry it, focusing on newer cultivars. Green leaf Nurseries, a wholesale grower, grew ‘White Profusion’ years ago. They had a site in El Campo years ago; I would imagine it is still in operation. ‘White Profusion’ is a taller variety, growing 6-7’ in my yard. It is root hardy in our area and stays evergreen when our winters are mild. I prune it heavily in late winter/ very early spring. If you see it for sale, grab one.
Thank you very much for the Pro-Tip on White Profusion Butterfly Bush. If I ever find one, I will snap it up!!!
I am north of Houston and planted Furman's Red Sage Salvia Greggii and it has performed very well. It's native to Texas and Mexico. Your back yard is so lovely and thanks for all you do!
Thank you so much for your comment! 😊 (Sorry for my late reply ... I haven't been on in awhile.)
I just today planted a new Tithonia from Parks. It’s a dwarf. Fiesta del Sol. Fingers crossed
Let me know what you think of the dwarf Tithonia! 😊
Oh my gosh! I haven’t seen Swedish ivy in years. That brings back memories of my parents’ garden. They always had Swedish ivy in hanging baskets. I bought Greg’s mist flower at H-E-B and planted in my new bed. They are already blooming. I can tell it is going to do well. Very excited. Have you ever had an issue with white flies on your porterweed? I think I may have them on mine. I’m not treating. It seems to be doing ok. Just wondering if you’ve had any experience with that?
Fall is the time when the Gregg's mist flower really blooms a lot. It is a perfect time too for the fall Monarch butterfly migration. No, I don't think I have seen white flies on my porterweed. I do have a lot of porterweed in the yard, and I don't see anything on it ever. It is one of those plants that has been pest free for me. The nursery I go to has Swedish ivy in hanging baskets in the fall for $19.99, and they always look so pretty. I now have 3 of the baskets from each of the last 3 seasons, and they are in bloom so nicely right now. Unfortunately the squirrels like them too, and I have a squirrel that likes to eat Swedish Ivy. (Grrrrrrrr). So, I have had to move them around in my trees so they aren't so easy to get to.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I garden north of Houston
I am so glad you found this video helpful! It's fun to connect with other gardeners in the area.
Where is your favorite online websites to get plants/seeds? OR what are your favorite stores here in Houston to buy plants?
Hello! I do most of my plant shopping in the Houston area, but will order a few seed packets and a couple of plants each year. In the Houston area my favorite nursery is Enchanted Gardens in Richmond (SW of Houston). It is an hour long drive for me, but I really like it.
