The electronic mechanism failed so I had to have a guy in Guayaquil disconnect it so it’s always unlocked now

@@Terra-Moto damn, I have a 2023 1290 SAS right now... hopefully I'll not have electronic failure on the FOB tank lid like you did. Owned a R1250 GSA before this that was also keyless and I had no issues with it.

@@sunnycloudy1337 I hope so too. It’s a real pain in the ass having to unscrew those six little screws every time you need to fill up gas. However, disconnecting the electronic fob lock for the gas tank isn’t super complicated.

As far as I know, that’s a KTM part- not Brembo although the pads are Brembo if I’m correct. Both mechanics told me that you can’t get that part aftermarket. They didn’t have one at the Quito store. I’m sure if it was Brembo I would’ve been able to procure one there.

Are you leaking oil? What problems have you had with the Africa twin? Thinking about getting one for when I tour Africa.

@@Terra-Moto is burning in combustion. They changed the culata of engine for bigger holes and problem remains-means is something else. It can as simple as oil problem itself-is too liquid

@@Terra-Moto perhaps mate, after there can sealing problems too, compression problems etc.. But the 10w30 is like water

Wow! That’s quite a bit of negative history with Ktm. I agree with you that Ktm charges way too much for the quality of the product and a lot more than comparable Japanese bikes and yet they are nowhere near as reliable. If the power, handling, and marketing weren’t top-notch, the company would be out of business.

Man, I'm glad to hear you only had one problem so far with the handlebar security lock on your 1290 SAS. To lock the steering turn the bars all the way left and press the grey kill switch for two to three seconds until you hear the little lock noise

I think you’re spot on. The electronics are a major problem. If I listed every problem, I’ve had with my 1290, it would take me a whole day. Most of the problems I can’t even remember now. The fact is, that we become intoxicated with the power and handling of the bike, and then justify all of the nuances. It’s like a love affair with a psycho partner. The sex is amazing but the relationship is purely toxic. I feel the same way with my super adventure. So frustrated all the time, but then the throttle changes everything. 🤪 I only hope that if enough of us make noise about the problems, eventually they will fix it. The bottom line, I’m so tired of shit that doesn’t work. Fingers crossed newer models will be much more reliable in the future.

KTM and BMW are horrible in reability, not is true that BMW work fine, please browsing in youtube or forum about BMW problems... is insane... If you buy a BMW because you think that BMW won't break... it's not true, BMW break the same or more that KTM. Is better drive a KTM that BMW because the two brand will be break... at least the motorcycle has less weight and more powerfull

Couldn’t agree more. They definitely have the marketing nailed. Like I mentioned in another comment, having a KTM is like having a toxic relationship with the hot psycho chick who is amazing in bed, but nothing but problems. I too would love the 890, however, after all the problems on this bike, I’m just not ready to take on another set of issues down the road. I’m sure the big Japanese bikes are nowhere near as much fun as the Ktm, however, at the end of the day reliability so important. Peace of mind comes from stability, not Performance

I don’t think the bigger Japanese bikes have anywhere near the electrical or mechanical problems that KTM‘s have.

@@edwsec Hi Edwsec. There is theory and there is reality. As I said, I have done multiple world wide trips -- similar to Terramoto. I have NEVER had a break down or issue with my BMW R1200's or F850GS -- Never. I have rode through Kyrgyzstan and through Argentina/Patagonia multiple times, rural Laos and through middle of Mongolia. Tell your story to someone else... Honest. Again, like Terroamoto, I only care about one thing when I go on a long ride -- 6 months or more -- to be safe and not have issues with my bike. Those two things make for a happy trip. I can only give my honest experiences that only a few of us actually have done.

I appreciate your excellent advice, which I gave myself an abundance of already. However, 21/2 days and not be able to fix a rear brake and open up a gas tank? C’mon bud….KTM can do a lot better

Also, I saw that they have aftermarket ones in the US. Doubt I can get one down here though.

@@Terra-Moto used it in a hard braking scenario and noticed it kinda felt like a weird grab with the rear caliper. Later there was nothing. This was all on the street and I primarily use my front brakes on asphalt.

You are spot on. Suspension should be tweaked continuously until you find what works best for you in the style of riding. Some people want an aggressive ride while others opt for a smooth and buttery ride.

My friend, that over 200kg. The maximum load capacity for these bikes with a stock rear coil is around 205kg. I would check w a KTM dealer and see if you can change the rear coil
