      Hey Shaun, thank you. The top dresser is a bannerman powered top dresser and I’ve designed a drag mat to go behind it. It works well. I can get 4 bags of F4 in it and it’ll give me about 50m2. It’s a good bit of kit. I’ve also just got a eliet power seeder too, which negates the need for dressing - especially good on lawns that don’t need a heavy Reno, great results with that too.

    Hello! Please help! After applying sand top dressing (half m3 /100m2) and smoothing it with a leveling rake, I noticed that no matter how I try to level the area, there remain tender, thin and weak horizontally lying blades of grass under the sand. Should I worry about them, or will they come out after a few days? They emerge as a result of a water jet (or water sprayed from half a meter away), but this slightly erodes the effect of leveling because it re-excavates the area filled with sand between the larger clumps of old grass, and can also displace upturned seeds and fertilizer particles. So far, I have applied only half of the planned amount of top dressing, I don't dare to spread more, I would like to wait until the grass grows a little (I cut it into short pieces before aerating the lawn). At the same time, I don't think I can wait too long, because I sowed fast-germinating seeds, and once the new grass comes, it shouldn't be necessary to loosen the soil. What do you advise?

    • @TheLawnologist
      @TheLawnologist 4 місяці тому

      Hi - tough on. I would just wait and see what happens. We’ve had a lot of rain and it’s sounds like you may have had some seed displacement with watering too. I’m not a huge fan of dressing with sand for these reasons. No harm in adding a bit more seed. But be gentle with the watering.

    "just spend a bit of time exploring what the pests are digging for (it could be rabbits also maybe) but if there are grubs or similar, then defo work on these too before you renovate. Good luck" Thanks for the advise & talk about timing! I read your comment & 30 mins later I found the culprit! One of OUR cats has decided he'll use the bare patch as a toilet! Mystery solved & hopefully he wont like the fleece. * I added this as a new thread as I understand once a comment is read/ answered it's not flagged again for creators.

    Looks fantastic now! I do enjoy your videos. Straight to the point & good nuggets of info when dealing with different scenarios. I'm trying to overseed a bare patch (started removing a few poa patches & ended up 2 x 1m sq bare patches ) and we have something coming in to the garden at night scratching the area up! (even through a 1m high temp fence) so I'm going to renovate this weekend & put fleece down after to try & deter them while the seed germinates. I think I'll put up a secondary small fence just around the patches for extra protection. I don't know if it's a fox(es) or cats. Our garden is walled, but I don't know if there's a way to get in via the neighbours. Just one thought on this vid, lots of quick panning shots tend to cause nausea when viewing (see my old home videos 😂)

    • @TheLawnologist
      @TheLawnologist 4 місяці тому

      Thanks so much 🙏 I prefer to you a smaller scarifier and have two on a lawn - commercially it makes us more efficient but the main reason is that we can cope with undulations easier and better. The wider the scarifier the harder it is to deal with the natural lumps and bumps in the lawns that are often seen domestically. Hope that helps.

    Thank you for your time mate! Nothing worse than trying to cut mossy grass with a mower! Ive had my customers buy a tub of the miracle grow weed and feed before today and sprinkled the pellets over it all! The moss turns brown pretty quick with that stuff and then as the grass is growing like mad from the feed it turns in to a weekly cut and that also helps take all the dead moss out faster! Only trouble is with the pellets its pretty hard to tell where you've already been scattering them , ive been thinking if i can find a decent spray version you could just spray up and down the lawn stripes to get a equal covering, trying to learn what i can on that side so any more info would be great! Thank you and keep warm out there at the minute 👌

    • @TheLawnologist
      @TheLawnologist 7 місяців тому

      HI there - So it really depends on the type of business you have I guess. I have access to come fairly heavy duty commercial ferrous sulphate that I mix into a tonic with other bits to really work into the moss. I'm not a huge fan of granular products, but one way to ensure you get even spread is to get a push or hand spreader, have it on the lowest setting and the fill with the required quantity and use until its all gone, making sure you methodically walk to ensure even coverage. With the liquid products; on Amazon there are some liquid options that can be applied with either knapsack or watering can (Viano springs to mind). I'd always opt for a knapsack sprayer and as you suggest, following the lines with an even spray. One thing to be mindful of though with any iron application is that it can stain hard surfaces.

    Great job, I scarified my huge lawn in June and it’s really flourished, is it wise to do again early spring next year instead of in middle of summer? I got trailer loads of moss and thatch out of it as hadn’t been done in over twenty years .

    • @TheLawnologist
      @TheLawnologist 11 місяців тому

      I would say, especially on the larger lawns that are harder to irrigate, it’s best to do that type of work mid Autumn, whilst the grass is still in its second period of growth and the soil is still warm enough to flick a bit of seed down. I’d be wary of spring on larger areas simply due to the incoming hot dry weather and the difficulty in watering and would almost always avoid June for the same reasons. How satisfying is it though when you pull out all that thatch - hard work but worth it 👍👍👍👍

      Thanks Mark. I over seeded last year with shady variety seed which has improved the lawn considerably. I decided not to put any fresh seed down after my dethatching as I have two huge beech trees in my garden which are dropping ridiculous amounts of seed heads and the husks. Every weekend it's a case of raking up the mess they drop and figured the new seed would not be happy being disturbed. If it's still a bit thin in the new year I will over seed in spring. I'm just pushing the growth with regular spoon feeding of nitrogen along with humic acid, seaweed and biostimulants.

      Thank you 🙏 Wait till you see the next project bubbling away - infact I may just upload the beginning of the video diary to show how it begins. It’s worse than this one 😂

    Brian looks like a decent new team member, not much craic out of him though!

      hahah Brian is a dear old boy, bit quite stoic and unassuming - I'm sure he'll relax over time

    Was any seed added after the scarification? Because if not, the result is amazing

      Hello - yes it was, I would’ve shown it but my battery ran low and stopped recording. Heavy scarification, aeration, overseed and topdress was the full and final process.

      @@TheLawnologistWhat did you overseed with? I dont know if you mentioned what turf type it was, but given the amount of thatch and the leaf blade shape I assume its Kentucky Bluegrass.

      @@mitch_the_rookieno Kentucky blue grass - that was a native fescue that has just been neglected for years and fed with synthetic fert. I went over with a 50/50 fesc and rye mix

      Thanks mate, and great point - although I do tend to fleece in Spring rather than Autumn, when the climate is far better for new lawn.
