Amateurs on an Allotment

July 2024. No dig allotment. Beautiful weather. The bindweed battle. Digging up first earlies.
We seem to spend all month weeding! But the weather turns lovely and the allotment is booming. Lots of flowers as well as veg and fruit.

June 2024. No dig allotment. French beans. Runner beans. Broad beans. Bindweed.

In the second half of June we finally get some good weather and the shorts come out! We plant more runner beans and two varieties of french beans, often to replace those eaten by slugs. Beetroot is ready for picking. We have courgettes and pumpkins in the ground, finally, and out brassicas continue to flourish. As does the bindweed. May 2024. No dig allotment. Pea frame. Pesky birds. Beans, beetroot and bindweed. And bickering.

In May, we build a frame for our peas to grow up, but then they got decimated by birds (I think). Loads of slug and snail damage to growing plants, so loads of new sowings. We planted The Czar runner beans, Lazy Housewife and Abundance french beans from @realseeds We planted out Purple Sprouting Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts (F1 Brendon). April 2024: no dig allotment onions, peas, tomatoes, beans. Stuff goes out despite weather.

In April, we got three types of onion in the ground. Sadly, the mice seem to have particularly enjoyed the Red Baron ... Peta shifted some dirt and Kev sowed beans and planted the tomatoes in the growhouse. Lots of indoor work, and time at the allotment between showers. March 24. Relax as we work on our organic, no dig allotment. Currant clearing, potatoes & tomatoes.

In March, we cleared a blackcurrant patch, planted first earlies (Red Duke of York), pricked out tomatoes (Sungold, Garnet, Alicante and Crimson Crush), harvested leeks, planted more broad beans, banana shallots, Oregon sugar pod peas and sowed the first carrots - Jaune Obtuse de Doubs and Manchester Table Carrot from Real Seeds. We have a debate about Easter, chocolate and Sunday roasts. Music...

Our video diary for February 24. The wettest Feb in donkey's years, but we still managed to get onto the allotment a few times. At home, I sowed a range of flower seeds including dahlias. On the allotment, I planted some leggy broad beans. Together, we tackled the weedy bed, opting to dig it over, despite being no dig fans in general.

Our video diary for January 2024. A quiet month in which we replaced the five year old path. Kev joined in the @pottymouthgardenclub onion challenge, and also followed @JessieatPlot37 's technique of planting indoor cucumbers. This is our personal diary to keep a record of what we did this year so we can make different mistakes next year
I'm still battling bindweed, and I've had my plot for 17 years!

They're doing well so far. Germinated in a few days, just potted on :-) Kev
