My poor Firefly petunia!!! #fireflypetunia
So just one month ago, the outdoor Firefly petunia was doing great!
NOW look at it.
I fixed one problem, but put off the other problem: the small holes, the frass, and all the signs of bug damage.
Today, though, was the last straw. The plant was in horrible condition. And now, the caterpillars were easier to find. They had nowhere to hide!
But I made the mistake of leaving them in a plastic container (with leaves pieces) on the same table.
I came back later when someone wondered if the caterpillars glow. The caterpillars were gone from the container - they were back on the plant. Those things can really book!

Unboxing Tubs for Tubes (THA outworlds) #antkeeping
Переглядів 6814 днів тому
THA (Tar Heel Ants) outworlds are artistic, solid, and attack-proof if closed up properly. I now use them for tubs-and-tubes ant set-ups. Granted, I still have some smaller Daiso boxes, but those are not attack-proof. What do I mean by attack-proof? I mean able to withstand and Argentine ant invasion. That happened TWICE in one year to my poor Campo CA02.
Sterilizing and reusing disgusting test tubes for #antkeeping

Ideas for how to clean out and sterilize glass test tubes for antkeeping. Starting with the old disgusting tube with moldy cotton, dead ants, and remnants of dead bugs, you can get a clean and sterile tube ready to house your colony. You just need a stove, water, an old pot, skewers and maybe some paper towels, cotton, and of course, the used glass test tubes.

Sorry a couple weeks late posting this video. I was trying to get better video footage with better exposure but it just wasn’t working. I need to post a new video as now, even further along, I’m seeing the effects of using the wrong fertilizers. I’m getting petunia-specific fertilizer and the l-tyrosine. Will see how it goes.
Combining colonies of Prenolepis imparis #antkeeping

Remember the Prenolepis imparis colonies I started early this year (2024)? Well, after various adventures (e.g. I had to combine two tubes and lost half the queens), I had 3 starter colony tubes and 1 2022, 3rd-year Preno colony tube. I don't have a lot of space so I wanted to consolidate them into two tubes-and-tub sets. Merging the 3rd year colony and the 1st year colony from the same locatio...
A quick look at Liometopum occidentale as a pet ant #antkeeping

Well, I keep looking at the brood pile in the Liometopum occidentale nest and thinking of escamol (no, I've never tried it, just read about it), so I figured I might as well make a video. Termitat update mid-August 2024: baby Zooteromopsis growing! #antkeeping

I've finally learned to video the Zooteromopsis BEFORE I water the Termitat. Here, the babies are growing bigger yet. I spent some time looking for the soldier and finally found him/her. (It still occurs to me that insects with big mandibles sometimes look like ducks when seen from the side....)

I was in a hurry but this little butterfly looked lavender-colored so I took a few seconds to try to video him. He was so skittish it was nearly impossible to get close. Oddly satisfying watching Veromessor andrei bring home the bacon #antkeeping

Newly arrived Veromessor andrei with their nanitics. I gave them some protein and watched their reactions. The video doesn't show their initial reactions of running away backwards, only because I didn't capture it (otherwise it was hilarious). Eventually they figured out what was edible and began bringing home the "bacon." (In this case, it's cricket caviar.)

Tried to collect live drywood termites, but this happened…. #antkeeping

I had tried to start drywood termite colonies starting with the winged reproductives (alates), but those starter colonies weren't in a secure container and got wiped out by Argentine ants. My secure container is quite small, so what I needed was a chunk of infested wood containing live termi...
Just little things for little things

Just a couple highlights from today that reminded me that little things matter. I got butterflies visiting thanks to a neighbor's generosity. And hopefully the little lizard does better outside the sports complex than inside with hordes of tromping feet and no easy access to insects. And if it benefits native animals and native plants, all the better!

    I have air plants for 10 years now. Some died. Some are thriving. I soak them in bowl for 8 hours, letting them dry on dish drying mat and hang them back on branches of decorative manzanita tree, free of any mount. Most of the plants can tolerate low humidity, they like to be dry for some period of time. I will soak air plants when they are curly, and they may dry slowly, like for a month, particularly xerographica.

    • @naturenerd99
      @naturenerd99 3 місяці тому

      I don't have any on mounts either. They are all thrown together in a hanging wire basket. I've been lazy recently and only dunk them once every 2 weeks or so - they are clearly stressed and the recently flowered ones aren't happy, but they seem to be surviving. Mine are definitely happier dunked 2x a week (4X more often than I'm doing it right now).... The ones I think are xerographica I try not to get the center wet. The large one only gets second hand dripping.

    Gratz. What's the timeline for them to turn into secondary reproductive and kay eggs.

    • @naturenerd99
      @naturenerd99 3 місяці тому

      Not totally sure on timeliine, but I got this particular Termitat in August of 2022, and in June 2023 I found both winged alates and the stubby-winged pre-alates - less than a year. I have not seen winged alates since then - I assume they died and got eaten because they couldn't actually fly anywhere - so I'm guessing maybe the pre-alates became secondary reproductives. However, I'm pretty unclear on the specifics of Zoot molting (I mean some termites can even molt "backwards" right? confusing). As for eggs, I found them May 2024, so it's been nearly two years.

    • @naturenerd99
      @naturenerd99 3 місяці тому

      P.S. I don't check the termites very often so it's totally possible the timeline is much more compressed and I just wasn't looking.

      Winter ants are found throughout most of the US and are generally the first ants to fly in late winter. My area of the West Coast they fly when it hits about 70F, and they are in less irrigated/less disturbed areas, near the base of trees and such sheltered areas (local colonies I know of are near a park shed and among some redwoods). They are most active in cooler weather. A bit tricky to care for.

      Yeah I should've had a better light barrier (I do have a partial but not opaque), but the first batch didn't get so bad in similar circumstances so this was a bit of a surprise. Soldiers get eaten if the colony can't support them. I think I read somewhere that they have a ratio of 1 soldier per 50 nymph/workers, but I could be misremembering. Alas, I didn't see how the soldiers were eaten.
